/fglt/ - Friendly GNU/Linux Thread

Previously on: Welcome to /fglt/. We are always open to users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

There are four ways to try GNU/Linux, you can:

0) Install a GNU/Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
1) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full GNU/Linux experience".
2) Dual-boot GNU/Linux with Windows/Mac (recommended if you want to learn more about GNU/Linux)
3) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with GNU/Linux

Before asking, please search for answers to your questions in resources.

Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.

Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe WINE can make up for it.

Testing it on the most popular distros simply makes the most sense because they are the ones that your potential customers are most likely to be using. You never know when some quirk introduced if the forking might cause a massive problem with your code. It just makes the most business sense.

there is no supportable evidence that buntu or mint are more used than debian. distrowatch is not a reputable source.
you also never mentioned a reason other than popularity (which doesn't make sense since buntu is debian+patches+bloat and mint is buntu+bloat+patches) as of why mint or buntu would make sense to test on.

>distrowatch is not a reputable source.
It's the best that we have.

Then make it for Debian then double check it on Unbuntu and Mint.

dumb tripfag cancer
There's a place for you jerks and it's called REDDIT

Someone forgot the f in /fglt/.

I want to block app ads in my phone via my portable 3G router (Hame A2).
I can block http traffic just fine : example.com
But for some reason it doesn't block https traffic : example.com

I tried to block googleads.g.doubleclick.net IP via the router's firewall :
74.125.200.154, 74.125.200.155, 74.125.200.157, 74.125.200.156

But for some reason the ads were still loaded, perhaps because Google has shitload of IP for load balancing.
As a last resort, I blocked port 443, it worked but that's kinda dumb as I couldn't access other HTTPS website.
Changing DNS won't work as our ISP use transparent proxy to block websites.

tl;dr :

Any idea how to block googleads.g.doubleclick.net in my router ?
I'm planning to install openwrt later in my router.

If you can't follow the rules of the anonymous imageboard culture, also the friendly rule will not include you.

why should i try out and install different DE? differences are in
>wm
>dm
>other programs (editors, browsers...)
all of these i could just try out by installing them instead of installing whole DE.
Am i wrong? If so, any easy way to try out different DE with one distro?
Or is best way with live-usb?

You could try out live CDs/USBs, but it would probably just be better just to play with them in virtual machines.

Install debian in a vm via netinstall, install all DEs during the install or after. You can switch between them with your dm.

Kill yourself.

There is a package called xul-ext-ublock-origin in the debian repos, maybe there is something similar for openWRT?

linuxBBQ has 76 window managers in one live iso. Installing them one by one could be done but some have to be set up a little for them to be usable.

But wouldn't i have all progs of all DEs then (like kate and gedit e.g.)?
Can i switch between DE in DM, not only WM?
I really ask myself why i would try out different DE instead of just different progs and/or WM. Whats the main difference between DE?
BTW, thanks for the answers.

AH, that's kind ofanswering my question regarding DE or WM.... >54442378, you'd rather go fir WM than for DE then? I check out BBQ...

And thx btw :^)

Thanks for the help.

First, I blacklisted IP Range of 74.125.0.0/16 in my router. The ads didn't load, but even google.com didn't load too.
Next, I shortened the IP Range to 74.125.200.0/24, the ads still didn't load, good.
At last, I shortened the IP range to 74.125.200.154/31 and 74.125.200.156/31, the ads still didn't load.

Fuck ads.
I don't mind ads in application if they nicely stay at the bottom, but this one goes full screen and cover everything with ads everytime I press refresh button 2-3 times.

>But wouldn't i have all progs of all DEs then (like kate and gedit e.g.)?
depends, you can install msot DEs minimally.
>Can i switch between DE in DM, not only WM?
yes, i for example use both openbox (in case something in gnome breaks, which can happen because i am on debian sid) and GNOME3 on wayland. in my DM (dm) i can switch between gnome on wayland, gnome on x11, gnome classic and openbox.
>Whats the main difference between DE?
the main difference is if it uses Qt (KDE and LXQt do) or GTK (xfce, gnome, lxde, mate and a few others do).
other than that it differs in the programs it uses by default (compositor, WM, menus, GUI settings,...).
DEs have the advantage of using programs that go together very well and are tested to be compatible as well as being more consistent by dafault. WMs have the advantage of having less dependencies (which causes them to be more stable most of the time) and taking up very little disk space.

for a new user i would suggest using a DE with all recommended software because it just feels more mature by default.
gnome is pretty cool btw.

github.com/openwrt/packages/tree/master/net/adblock/files

have you tried looking at blocklists that adblockers generally use and just copying them?
github.com/gorhill/uBlock/tree/master/assets/ublock

Is there anyway to add window snapping to i3? When a window is in floating mode ofc.

The tripfriend wasn't drawing attention to himself, he was actually contributing to the thread. The only one shitposting and derailing the thread here is you. You are the cancer user.

>>>/reddit/

Sweet, one gets real andwers here instead of being called faggot. appreciate
I've been using linux for years now, (suse, kanotix, kubuntu, tried out few others even arch-meme) and now wanna go deeper into it and try more, different stuff.

np m8
i forgot to add that you can actually mix and match a lot of DEs with other WMS or programs. for example you can switch out xfces WM (xfwm) with something like i3 and the compositor with compton and it will work just fine for most things.

Is Slackware the final boss of GNU/Linux distributions?

no, LFS is. especially with linux-libre.

LFS is not a distro.

as soon as you are finished, it is.

Distrowatch says it is
distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=lfs

Can you actually use LFS as a daily use distribution?

you can but it will be a lot of work. if you use this as a daily driver for an extended amount of time you can actually put it on your resume. I'd probably employ someone who did it.

kek github.com/LandonPowell/ThankYou.c

What kind of work?

sysadmin, for most other things it's not really that helpful.

user meant the most potential customers would be on Ubuntu who were incapable of fixing their own shit

it would be cool if this would send a mail to the devs thanking them.

This is actually funny. Ported it to sh:

thanks() {
if [ -z "$1" ]; then
printf 'You’re welcome.\n'
else
printf '%s has been thanked.\n' "$1"
fi
}

Slackware is a deprecated POS with no real value or point to install.

Gentoo fags have the excuse that they compile things for their own

Arch fags have the excuse that they have access to the AUR

Ubuntu sellouts have the excuse that their shit works ootb XDD

Fedora beta cucks are using RHEL with the latest softwares

RHEL prajeets just don't want to deal with system maintenance because NSA is already hard to deal with

Cheeky CentOS faggots know what they are doing with their servers, good speed

Cuckware adds absolutely zero value to the Linux community. It's irrelevant and deprecated

Yeah the fucking hosts file

godspeed*

good speed*

It's a lot of work to manage that manually.

Needs to add a check for if the input is "linux" so it can interject.

The kernel is linux and there is no reason to call it anything else unless it's deblobbed and a gnu package.

The user doesn't interact with the kernel; your argument is invalid.

You almost had a good point, except you insisted the kernel must be linux.

I was actually hoping to bait freetards into agreeing with my sentiment, instead you had to show the depths of stupidity on the other side.
Please, just stop posting.

Memes aside, how to wordfilter in a shell script? grep results? sed? Bash? What's the most elegant way?

if linux/i but not gnu/i then stallman()

sed for filtering, grep alone isn't going to help you actually modify the text.

There used to be done wm pasta that had a link to some bash scripts that worked with any wm, had something to do with ponies...

Slackware's one of the oldest and most reliable distribution there is. It's the most UNIX like

What color scheme is this? I liked it.

Also, what's the best terminal emulator for GNU/Linux?

What? My argument is that the kernel is linux, nothing more and nothing less.
Your "b8" didn't make sense.

>the kernel is linux

Please, stop posting.

Different user, but I know who you're talking about. I can't find the wm configs you're talking about, but I recall the person going by the name twiley

what are you even on about?

The kernel of the GNU system doesn't has to be Linux.

>the GNU system
lel
>trying this hard

Hello all, I have dual graphics laptop with AMD Llano, AMD 6620G and AMD 6600M graphics.

When I'm using ubuntu, I have to set option in grub to boot "nomodeset".

Then it's working, but my resolution is too small and I cannot change it.

Does somebody have advice what to do? Thanks!

I never said anything about this. I am in favor of calling the OS GNU, but that doesn't change that the kernel of GNU/Linux is generally Linux.
you can call it linux-libre if you use that.

What are all these CLI shit that people have running in their screenshot threads.

So far I have Screenfetch and htop, but what else is there to rice my shit up senpai

probably some obscure irc clients or something
using screenfetch instead of inxi is a sign for severe autism.

>the kernel of GNU/Linux is generally Linux.
I'm pretty sure it would always be linux in that case.

It can be Linux-Libre. hence my original statement in

it's still linux, linux libre is just the normal linux kernel with some stuff not compiled in to it.

>tfw reddit gets hold of linux

There are shitloads of other kernels, not only Linux and GNU Linux-libre.

yes, but a gnu/linux system wouldn't be using one of them would it.

>gnu linux libre
that is hilarious

well, the renaming is legitimate when using GPL2.
this is true but the only way the script in will find anything when typing "Linux" is that you run it on a computer with Linux or Linux-Libre installed.

The point is, on multiple occasions you asserted that the kernel IS linux, rather than just saying it could be (or even is likely to be).

Obviously the script in question can run on many number of systems using the linux kernel, but there is no reason whatsoever to assume this to be the case.

I usually tend to disagree with the argument that people who refer "linux" meaning the complete OS are tech illiterate, but chucklefucks like you just keep fuelling the fire.

Hint: if you needed that software, you'd know their names and most likely already had it installed.

rizonrice.github.io/resources
Why not help him. He just wants to be cool.

maybe wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/PRIME helps, i am fortunate to have never had to deal with this before.
what does xrandr say?

did you consider ?

Hello. Guy whose question you answered. Sorry but your answer is kind of incomplete. Fedora makes sense. Why would I test on both Ubuntu and Mint when they're very similar? And if I only test on Fedora and Debian-likes, then I leave a huge scope of basic configurations unchecked. The point is to cover the largest userbase possible. The likeliness of a problem occurring because of a difference between Ubuntu and Mint can't be very big, right?

>(which doesn't make sense since buntu is debian+patches+bloat and mint is buntu+bloat+patches)
Since ubuntu has its own, non-portable DE, I would say it's important to test it on Ubuntu just to ensure there's no desktop integration-related issues with the software.

I will try it thank you!

...

>The point is to cover the largest userbase possible.

Ubuntu and Mint are just the two most popular distros. Checking them will cover the largest user base. The chances of them failing on one and not the other is slim, but why take chances when testing on one should be relatively quick after you have already tested and fixed it on the other.

Sorry but I don't think you know what you're talking about bro.

That's fine. It's not my job on the line. Do what you like, bud.

So I tried to install Ubuntu from a live CD last night, I got to the point where I put in my info for account and then once I hit continue it freezes up. It can't be a lack of specs on my computer since I have than enough.anyone have any ideas?

Is it true that i will be able to play video games on Linux thanks to Vulkan?

youtu.be/0y3LaLJoo0s

Thx again

>my advice is so good that you'll lose your job if you don't take it

Bro. I've been holding back from making fun of you since I saw your first reply because this is the friendly thread, but you're such a stereotypical tripfag, you really have it coming.

Please fuck off this thread. You are not fit to give advice.

Probably.

Desktop threads are banned senpai

Feel free to believe what you like, but that green text is a really poor strawman. Either way, I wish you luck friend :)

Hopefully

really? nice, now they can finally fuck off to /soc/ or /wg/

>doom is on vulkan
holy shit that's big news. bethesda being independent from windows could change quite a few things.

I've been using putty + xming on windows to SSH into my ubuntu box for virtualbox and a few other things.

Most of the time though when I alt+tab away the xming window freezes and I usually have to terminate the program to be able to open it again. In case of virtualbox I have to kill the VM to be able to see the screen again.

Wat do?

Except the script doesn't fucking search for anything, it just checks if it was called with any arguments, if so use the first one in the output string.

You could run "thanks windowsNT" on a debian install, and it will still return "windowsNT has been thanked."

there's a new doom?

Yeah, every night when mods go to bed, a few anons begin spamming porn threads. They've been doing it since desktop threads were banned

dumb tripfag cancer

>They've been doing it since desktop threads were banned
It's almost as if desktop threads were an excuse for compulsive weeb shitposters to shitpost and now they have to resort to downright spamming.

why did the desktop threads get banned anyway? Just for the anime overload? I sometimes enjoyed looking at them, between all the extremely riced desktops there was sometimes an inspiring setup or two
