What are adblockers?

Things that a minority of internet users use.

Why? They're free. If you can torrent shit you should be able to install ublock origin.

The majority of males 18 - 34 who are interested in geek culture like Sup Forums and reddit have an ad blocker. There is a lot of discussion among advertisers about how to show ads to that group.

Because most people don't care. They grew up on television

It's literally just the safebrowsing feature which you should turn off on all browsers.

Easy. Just have an element on the server that is locally hosted for advertising.

Dynamically loaded iframes from remote sites is cheap, but it's too easy to block.

That may work for showing ads, but they're less likely to click or buy from those ads. They really want relevant content.

Then whenever a page is generated, before it's sent to the user, the ad server is contacted and the relevant ad downloaded (just an image file) and url, then it's inserted into the page, then sent to the user.

That's kind of how relevance is added currently. Getting keywords from a block of text or determining sentiment is difficult though. A lot of success is being made by creating content that's sponsored by a company.

good goy

I get so annoyed at websites that bury their actual content, they must really hate their users, it is not impossible to label advertising clearly, or to put style guidelines in place that stop advertisers doing annoying shit like this

Did anybody in the history of ever with an IQ over 90 ever fall for these?

>There is a lot of discussion among advertisers about how to show ads to that group.
Good luck with that, because fuck ads. Worse case scenario I can just block the elements and frames that are used to contain ads.

You'd be surprised how few people are over IQ 90, even on this board

The majority of people are

The idea is that content is sponsored by a company. At that point there's nothing to block. My only reference is an article I read a while ago about how Imgur and Pinterest are doing it. I'm not an expert but they specifically talked about ad blockers.

still the wrong one, this is what you should be using

>At that point there's nothing to block.
What, ads injected into a stream or something? Still blockable.
I do not want to return to the early 90s-00s with those fucking obnoxious ads in my face.

this. You realize 100 IQ is designed to match average intelligence?

there is a marketing strategy which tries to control cultural narrative. Sort of example might be some girl at your work who watches too much tv saying something like "omg you drink coke over pepsi, that's so disgusting". Shit example but you get the point.

Such as yourself, unable to understand how IQ works?

You'd be surprised how many people don't know what browser add ons are.
>on friend's laptop
>ask him why doesn't he have an ad blocker
>guy's looking at my face in daze like Jesus Christ and Hitler just entered the room
And to think he's got a $2000 laptop.

that's not a marketing strategy, that's a simple play on pushing human buttons, and one of those buttons is peer pressure

bet this guy scored 90 on an IQ test and is like "everyone scores nintay, right guys"

>You realize 100 IQ is designed to match average intelligence?
but intelligent design is a myth

They're moving away from iframes and obnoxious animations and more into relevant content. So they would be injected into the stream and labeled as ads but otherwise exactly the same as native content.

>obnoxious animations
No they won't. These are advertisers we are talking about. They will always try to top each other in being obnoxious and in-your-face. Subtlety would imply the company they're advertising for has actual class.

Some will. They want to be in your face. The smart advertisers are realizing that 18 - 34 year old males use ad blockers. It doesn't matter how flashy and annoying an ad is if it never gets seen.

Which marketing companies employ as a strategy to promote their products

I saw it on south park and they're never wrong

How can I report a deceptive site? Paint Dot Net's is particularly bad.

It doesn't matter though because people in that demographic are the least likely to fall for ads anyway. When's the last time you bought something because of a billboard or TV ad? Basically all advertising is aimed at soccer moms, Chads, and pensioners.

shame on you paint.net

peer pressure is a strategy? it's fucking elementary school all over again if it is

You're right but advertisers see it as an opportunity.

You mean advertorial and sponsored contents? Ain't that what big name YouTubers are for anyway?

>Is this the end of "DOWNLOAD" ads?
This is so fucking stupid. Why not just block the download ad? lmao

Right. An opportunity to fuck up. Again.

What was the definition of insanity again?

That's what sites are doing now that browsers will display big, red, warnings if a site is like that.

That's what I'm talking about.

So edgy

>big fat WE HAVE DETECTED THAT YOU HAVE AN ADBLOCKER ON, PLEASE TURN IT OFF TO ACCESS CONTENT blocking site content
>right-click inspect and identify unique element
>display:none
>warning sign gone, continue browsing

Great Post!

Why would anyone turn it off? You can go to the website anyway with 2 clicks if you want to proceed anyway, but at least you're aware there is an issue.

god damn that's bad

>Why would anyone turn it off?

It's a google service.

I've used adblock long before knowing Sup Forums existed.

I was annoyed by the adds so I googled how to remove adds... lmao.

>le google is bad meme

OK, I'm sure you prefer not to use condoms too because they're made from Saudi oil.

This is good, but the wording is buzzwordy and misleading. It should just say something like "This site is known to have deceptive advertisements tricking you to download software. Be careful what you click."

2bh Sup Forums users are just as likely to use an ad blocker as they are to shitpost about a youtuber.

The wording is 100% accurate though. All websites are responsible for the content on them. That's why Sup Forums has to remove child porn and links to websites that host child porn. They can't hide behind "that's someone else's content!"

>The wording is 100% accurate though.
You're right, but it doesn't really get the point across of why the warning is there. "Attackers may trick you into doing something" doesn't tell you what to watch out for, which is what I'm saying.

The point is to scare people. When this message appears, domain owners will fix it after seeing their traffic massively drop.

>having the need to use condoms

>"Attackers may trick you into doing something" doesn't tell you what to watch out for, which is what I'm saying.
The list probably doesn't contain information that specific, just the domain.

Okay, I think this is good point, because the default option is "back to safety" and it acts like the whole website it bad. It could indeed be a way to fix the problem.

I guess there could be more criteria as to why this appears besides download buttons.

All makes sense.

>Okay, I think this is good point, because the default option is "back to safety" and it acts like the whole website it bad.
My biggest problem with this is actually that it instills a false sense of security.

A blacklist doesn't give you the guarantee that everything not on the blacklist is “safe”.

If their addon was whitelist based and only allowed connections to known good pages, I would be comfortable with this wording.

I used to block ad servers in hosts file way before adblock existed...

No? Not him but IQ is scaled, 60 is average, 124 top -4 minimum.

Isn't that Google Ads?

Do you want validation for that?

Don't forget about children too

Yes please, with extra cheese!

Yes.

Then it's on Google because they are the ones serving deceptive ads with their platform.

wazzup

No one ever clicked the download button tho

when you go to a torrent site you're looking for a torrent not a fucking download to some other shit

>Regulate how ads appear

kek

>google installs deceptive ads on torrent networks
>google then blocks websites for having google's deceptive ads

So I guess your IQ is average then?

this, condoms are a deal breaker for me.
