BSD General

Welcome to BSD General. This thread is open to all things BSD including comparison to GNU/Linux and beginner inquiry.

Interested in trying BSD? Security and open source oriented users should check out OpenBSD. The most common and server-minded distro is FreeBSD, which PC-BSD has forked for desktop users. If you want to use a BSD OS and the installation/configuration don't appeal to you consider Apple's OS X in a virtual machine or Mac computer.

Blue Screen Death

ITT: Apple Shilling General

I'm gonna get deep into OpenBSD once I'm done with finals on Thursday I can't wait. I've already tasted and familiarized myself with superior UNIX computing and have only heard good things about BSD.

Just created a FreeBSD server and was disappointed that my GPU doesn't work on my desktop because AMD is a shit.

Bsd is cancer kys

I have a quick question regarding xorg (X Server)

So when I install the xorg package in BSD, the intel video drivers come bundled, correct? The reason I ask is because when installing Arch and installing xorg, I would always have to install the xf86-video-intel package separately.

This is what I'm doing too haha. After school I have so much free time on my hands and I can read up on the BSD system. I feel so euphoric right now tbqhwyf,

ganoo lunix is superior

In what way

>familiarized myself with superior UNIX computing
codewords for "I bought a macbook"

>because FreeBSD is a shit
ftfy; try it in parallels, it should have drivers for virtual svga adapter tho

Nah, it literally is AMD, they don't support it. Nvidia works perfectly.

I was interested in using it as my main OS so nah

all of them

>because AMD is shit
ftfy

>cuck license
fucking dropped!

So I got openBSD and it doesn't let me use my S/PDIF optical audio. I don't know how to start it with mixerctl.

Any help on this?

install gentoo

I jacked off to the OP pic about 10 years ago. That is all.

BSD uses a depreciated sound system dropped from Linux called OSS. If you want working sound you need to use pulseaudio on top because nothing supports OSS.

Seems to be working fine with all the other outputs. Just not SPDIF

What do you mean by that

GNU People hate the BSD license because it doesn't force free software virally, it lets devs make their code proprietary.

Anyone have experience with ghostbsd?

>tripfag this desperate for attention AGAIN

Incase anyone ever wants to know this because it seems undocumented if a bit obvious

mixerctl outputs.mode=digital fixes it.

》Virally
》Not spiderplant-ly

>>>the sort of threads that are killing Sup Forums
I was looking for any thread about BSD, but it's not going to be this one. OP should commit sudoku.

Instead of creating the same threads multiple times why not have one centralized thread? You realize with one thread instead of multiple threads you aren't wasting space in the catalog with thread duplication. So explain to me how this is "killing Sup Forums".

cuck license tho

>one centralised thread

Lol okay, I'll bite. What would you do instead?

>asking what Sup Forums has been doing for years
Spotted the newfag. When did you join Sup Forums? 2015? 2016?

I think you're the only newfag here though based on the fact that you didn't realize the state of threads on Sup Forums prior to making centralized threads.

>Hurr durr izz liek Reddit omg
Fuck of you child.

>all this damage control

BSD is not UNIX

Wait, so are you going to continue strawmanning, or did you want to respond to what I said?

>straw man: a sham argument designed to be defeated
Can you point one out?

Every BSD thread is 50% explaining the UNIX lineage repeatedly and 50% GPL shills cuck-posting

Sure. Remember when I said how the quality of Sup Forums was actually worse before general threads. Were you going to to respond that or just say damage control, because when you say "damage control" out of nowhere, your post comes off as damage control.

La tia de la portada para mi jajajajaja

>kids not interested in BSD really and just joining the thread because they want to troll
If you're not going to discuss *BSD on its own merits, GET THE FUCK OUT.

That feel, but Mac OS X isn't fully BSD. Also, POSIX/SUS lean towards System V. But yes, BSD is Unix.
It wasn't worse though.
Of course, that's only subjective.

Every BSD thread is 50% mactards pretending to not be tech illiterate morons and 50% pretending their toddler OS with a frankenturd mach/next abomination is actually UNIX.

Nowhere in that post is an acceptance of shitposting.

i think the cuck-posting is funny because it shows you how mature GPL supporters and freetards are

I'm interested in learning *BSD. Should I start with FreeBSD?

Yeah.

Or OpenBSD. Keep in mind they're really bad in Virtualbox, if that's what you're using.

Yes, the handbook is the most extensive and holds your hand to an extent.
freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/
netbsd.org/docs/guide/en/
openbsd.org/faq/index.html
dragonflybsd.org/docs/handbook/
Though, odds are, if there's something you just can't find in the FreeBSD handbook, it's probably on another BSD's website and is just as educational. Never used NetBSD, but the NetBSD website pointed me to where I learnt vi: using a tutorial included in the vi source code.

Well, my plan was to try them in Vbox. I will see if I can get an old notebook/thinkpad to try. Thank you.

Great! Thank you for the tips and the links.

Is BSD hard to setup if I wanna use xfce for example

Not at all.

Works pretty much like Linux if you're planning to do that.

>complaining about shitposting
>on Sup Forums
Go back to r@ddit or lurk moar

>Sup Forums is supposed to be shit xD
that's how we know YOU are the redditor

Hmm ok. I'll give it a shot. Lets hope it works better than xfce on Arch.

>Hehe i love memes on Sup Forums xDD
back to Rgag

sauce of pic?

Honestly DEs, just in my personal opinion, aren't worth the effort. It's easy for me to do stuffs in a simple WM now.

Yeah, I think cwm is a masterpiece, and it comes with OpenBSD.

You feeling like having to read tons of Documentations for said WM, manually go in and configure every single about the WM in various config files, learn the syntax of the config file in the first place is less of an effort than using a DE?

man.openbsd.org/cwm
man.openbsd.org/cwmrc.5
It's not very hard.

That's what she said, to you

Sup Forums was always shit

Fag

>Sup Forums was always shit
Did you read that on ED? Did you know ED is a satirical website?

Yes, because all the DEs are being ported from GNU/Linux and thus are missing any feature that has the Linux kernel or systemd as a dependency.
I'll try Lumina some day after they release 1.0

Going by your logic, the Chris-Chan article was wrong and he's brilliant.

Sindy The Altoids Devil Girl

Gorgeous girl, definitely better than beating off to a fucking penguin.

The only serious ED articles are the ones where the subject of the article is seriously fucked up.

Do you realize they tend to exaggerate? If you don't you have autism.

ED is half exaggeration and half truth. The part about Sup Forums always being shit is truth.

So you did read ED and you believe everything said on it. Amazing how I was right the first time.

It's how we know you're also new. I think it's really funny that people go "haha Sup Forums is bad i might as well just fling my shit around and make it worse!"

thanks based user

I have a network set up in my wpa_supplicant.conf file but it isn't connecting. How do I conenct
