Unfortunately, it's also pretty painful to use, the dev hates usability, and it has only very basic hardware support (admittedly for good reasons).

I've been running Qubes as well for the past year and am very impressed with it. Moved over from Debian, installed their Debian template and it is literally the exact same experience. I left the default Fedora install to handle the networking, and use Debian because apt-get packages are what I'm familiar with.

For all intents and purposes *everything* you do on Qubes is sandboxed. That is a huge step forward in bringing security to userland.

Qubes devs maintain Fedora and Debian ports, and there are volunteer-managed builds of Whonix, Ubuntu, and Arch.

The Whonix integration works flawlessly as well.

Honestly this OS deserves a lot more attention than it's getting.

I wanted to try it but the install would hang with no errors. Either a complete freeze or just sit there with nothing happening in any processes and nothing interesting in logs. The liveusb version worked great, but you can't install from that version.

From what i played with on the live USB it seems pretty solid. The only complaints I have are a terrible lack of documentation, and I think KVM would have been a better choice than Xen. If you wanted to run a windows vm then it wouldn't have sound due to a bug in xen (unless you have a second sound card and pci pass through to the windows guest.)

For those trying it out, don't run in a VM, it won't work. Qubes relies advanced hardware features and uses an extensive amount of ram since it virtualizes everything.

It's a hypervisor tailored for end-users, pic related, Qubes uses type 1. The hypervisor it uses is Xen, the same Amazon uses for AWS. It has plenty of support, as much as you'd find in any other linux distro anyway.

You can install a debian, fedora, ubuntu templates, and it virtualizes whatever software you run off that template. It's literally the same as running the distro itself. It takes a bit to figure out how to use the dom0 VM manager to install/customize/run software but beyond that it's the same experience.

The security is more how you use the system than the system itself; I use a debian template for shitposting/fapping, and I keep my fedora template pure vanilla and only use it for banking, work email, things like that. By separating your slutty use with your professional use, you keep all the viruses you'd get being slutty in the slutty box and keep your clean work in the clean box.

Mostly it depends on your hardware whether or not Qubes will run efficiently, see here: qubes-os.org/hcl/

Qubes OS itself uses virtualization, so you can't really install it unless you're hypervisoring
