I think the average American regards the Soviet Union as something bad, but knows fuck all about its leaders or how it worked. The types of people who watch Fox and constantly compare everything to communism have sort of nullified a lot of the fear people actually had for communism.

There's a lot of relevant world history and a short time for schools to cover it all. Most Americans who weren't alive for the Soviet Union probably don't understand anything about it. But ignorance is a far cry from glorifying one of the most notorious mass murderers in history.

Those that don't give a shit aren't going to learn, and those that do, history documentaries are some of the most popular, well-done, and easily digestible and accessible out of all documentaries, and the mistakes are on par with your average high school textbook anyway.
