Previously on: Welcome to /fglt/. We are always open to users of all levels, including absolute beginners.
There are four ways to try GNU/Linux, you can:
0) Install a GNU/Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes" 1) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full GNU/Linux experience". 2) Dual-boot GNU/Linux with Windows/Mac (recommended if you want to learn more about GNU/Linux) 3) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with GNU/Linux
Before asking, please search for answers to your questions in resources.
Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.
Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe WINE can make up for it.

Stallsham is already irrelevant. It's only Linus's work he crawls to.

Everyone knows who Stallman is. I learned about him in World History class in high school. Literally NO ONE KNOWS OR CARES about sinus snorevalds.

I have a question
Whenever I want to select a file using an application (e.g. selecting an image to be posted via firefox), I get this butt-ugly thing in pic related.
I don't care for the aesthethics, but for some reason this thing only gives me very limited access. I have four drives in my computer, and I can't access any of them with this dialogue box. It's no problem with a regular file manager, but this thing here for some reason can't access shit (or rather, doesn't even display it).
How can I fix this?
Nicholas Allen
the init part does only that systemd-timesyncd keeps clocks in sync with ntp systemd-analyze analyzes boot times localectl sets the locale etc
Andrew Robinson
That's the Qt filechooser. I don't know how you managed to make Firefox use it. Usually Firefox should be using the GTK2/3 filechooser which looks like pic related.
Jack Perry
Beats me too, Firefox is suddenly using nemo again.
Thanks for the name though, that should be all I need to find out how to change it for other applications.
Jason Gomez
Is there a simple CLI opus tagger like metaflac? I can't find anything.
That looks rather heavy. I just want to set or print tags , and perferably that works with multiple formats.
Jacob Ortiz
>GNU has multiple kernels That's a good jape mate
Luke Hernandez
there's hurd, kfreebsd, linux-libre, linux, mach
Brandon Williams
>hurd[...]mach listing mach 2 times
Robert Collins
>linux-libre, linux
Julian Brown
this is how free software licenses work
Ryder Martinez
is there a way that i can save my mouse map settings so i dont have to type xinput set-button-map 8 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 1 everytime i log in?
Austin Kelly
>this is how free software licenses work Taking someone else's work, slapping a license on it and calling it your own?
Kevin Hill
what's the general method for installing something on linux? i'm trying to install racket so i'm downloading the linux version for my architecture from their website. what do i do with the .sh file?
Camden Morgan
How much longer till you guys grow up and stop using Linux?
Aaron Cook
Put it in your ~/.xinitrc if you use that
Jace Roberts
this is a friendly thread. Get out with your baiting and trolling and general nastiness. (I mean this is Sup Forums of all places, if you want to shitpost try Sup Forums, Sup Forums or whatever, they will be happy to have you there. Just fuck off)
Adam Gray
put it in your .xinitrc right abvove the exec line
Zachary Baker
you can't just change the license. the author of that software specifically wanted people to fork it, otherwise he wouldn't have chosen that license. by using your package manager. if it is only there via sh file, you need to run it. in order to do this you need to make it executable first.
Nathan Cruz
>gnu has loads of kernels >lists a linux kernel with a gnu license attached to it >cries ok user
Logan Thomas
I have this little problem with the visualizer in ncmpcpp and CAVA when none of them show the visualizer, any way to fix it?
Bentley Moore
first step is to try and install the software you want from your distribution's repository.
Downloading things from websites should be the very last thing you do.
Nicholas Hernandez
>has no idea what he's talking about >posts anyways ok kid
>I'll take this kernel code, compile it with certain options turned off and call it my own
Luis Gonzalez
got it, thanks
Easton Howard
Yeah but now the ncmpcpp vis shows like this and the CAVA doesn't shows up
Jaxson Lewis
It's called a fork user. Linux-libre is a fork of linux kernel with binary kernel blobs removed because inclusion of non-free kernel blobs (necessary for a lot of hardware combinations to work) is against FSF's philosophy.
Please refrain from using words and terms you don't understand.
Thanks

i want to install something into my usr directory, but it needs super user permissions to create the directory. and when i su to become super user, it messes up because i'm not the user whose usr directory i want it installed in. what do? i was doing ./filename.sh
Jeremiah Fisher
change ownership with chown
Jacob Robinson
Is there a real time voice modulator?
Ayden Collins
chmod -R 777 /home/user/folder_you_created
Angel Johnson
so i su, then chown the file, and then execute it?
Anthony Green
>Fork a package, change a few options in the config, say it's mine

post mpd.conf and cava config

Can anyone tell me if Ubuntu Gnome has the driver detection thing that comes in the standard Unity package?I ask because I hate using Ubuntu's software centers for installing drivers.
Jayden Sanders
do you mean /usr or /home/user?
If its /usr,you should use your packager manager to install it.
Brayden Murphy
go file a complaint to fsf :))
Luke Stewart
I don't know the answer, but Ubuntu 16.04 has Gnome-Software now, doesn't it? So at least you don't need to worry about Ubuntu Software Center
Kayden Bell
sorry im a nub, literally installed linux last night. i opened xinitrc in /etc/X11/xinit and it now looks like this #!/bin/sh
# /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc # # global xinitrc file, used by all X sessions started by xinit (startx)
# invoke global X session script xinput set-button-map 8 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 . /etc/X11/Xsession I restarted but my mouse didnt get remapped was this the place i was supposed to put the command?
Aaron Cox
audio_output { type "fifo" name "my_fifo" path "/tmp/mpd.fifo" format "44100:16:2" }
and the cava one is the default config
Bentley Nelson
No, not there. How do you start your session? What DE do you use?
Robert King
Have you tried it? 99% of the Ubuntu packages aren't even in there.I'm now juggling three shitty software managers(including Synaptic).Way to go Ubuntu!
Henry Anderson
using Cinnamon in Linux Mint
Jackson Flores
you know that these are just frontends right? just use aptitude and be done with it.
Jordan Hughes
that may be your problem the default cava config does not provide anything because everything in it is a comment. remove the ; infront of method = fifomethod = fifo source = /tmp/mpd.fifo bars = 0 bar_width = 3 bar_spacing = 1 and restart cava source = /tmp/mpd.fifo
James Clark
I haven't really used cinnamon but there should be a place to set the startup programs, you might be able to just set it there or you might need to put it in a .sh script and load that at startup.
Jace Watson
Can I use Facebook with Linux?
Tyler Hernandez
Of course not and Linux got no web browsers, instead they use Freedombook on fidonet
Jeremiah Murphy
Absolutely not, facebook® hasn't released proper drivers for the Linux™ kernel yet
Leo Campbell
Okay, found startup apps and added the command. Thanks for the help user
Lucas Nelson
unfortunately cava still the same, but, how i can fix the ncmpcpp one? that one still fucked
Caleb Hall
OK thanks, I'm going to keep my Mac then.
Anthony Torres
10/10
Thomas Edwards
Use an Xorg conf file instead. Here's how mine looks like for reference.
So basically, when programming in bash, even when [ is possible, I should use [[ because it's less error prone, but when I write something simple in sh, I use [. Am I doing it right?
Nathaniel Fisher
y
Brayden Turner
I have no idea whats wrong with your ncmpcpp because the config looks good to me
Isaiah Adams
Thank you.
Mason Brooks
No. You can use [ safely. And [ is portable, not [[.
Tyler Edwards
Welp, when he writes a BASH script, why not using superior [[ ]]? Since shell scripts are declared by a shebang, nobody would try to run it with sh or zsh anyway.
Easton Hill
Why write a bash script when a simple shell script will do the job?
Aaron Lopez
Hi there, 1990sLinuxuser
Gavin Allen
Some things are better done in bash. Nobody want's to write cpu eating emulations for simple things, just to be portable as fuck.
Jackson Jones
>Some things are better done in bash They're really rare. And if you really need something more complex than shell, maybe you should try python.
Brandon Morris
Well, I probably did something wrong when i was installing the whole thing, who knows, I'll figure it out eventually. Anyway Thanks for the help I appreciate it.
Austin Jackson
Using Kubuntu, how do i disable middle click paste?
Nicholas Kelly
I switched to Linux Mint at about the same time Windows 10 came out. How do I make all of my friends switch, too?
Brayden Moore
by showing them neat and useful stuff. don't force it, they will ask when they are interested.
Easton Cooper
I am about to install fedora23. Should I go with mate or cinnamon spin?
Logan Nelson
I installed KDE but now urxvt have this weird black border.
