I'm ready to get torn a new asshole by you guys:

>Grew up poor but always loved computers
>went into the marines as soon as I was 18
>had no time for computers or gaming fit for the 4 years I was in
>now that that I'm out I want to get into computers

Is this a good start if I want to play games?

If not, can you recommend me a better "rig" for under $1,000?

A fool and his money are soon parted.

...

Your post sounds honest OP, so let me give you some tips:

1. dont buy AMD
2. never ask Sup Forums for computer advice because theyll simply spout memes at you about stuff (see 1 although that one is true)
3. go here instead which will give you better advice reddit /r/buildapc with less smarmy comments

The best way to get into computers is to build your own.

er by "here" I ment reddit /r/buildapc

>here
>reddit
go back to there.

This user is right.

Building PC isn't much harder than assembling a Lego. General rule: if it's not fitting without applying force, it doesn't belong in this slot.

It has a bad PSU and a motherboard that is a sheep in wolf clothing, it can literally go up in flames with a decent overclock and it has a FX 8350 which is a poor choice.

I ment to say "go here blah blah: [link]" but im retarded because its midnight.

does it bother you that I browse both? wait dont answer, because I couldnt care less what you have to say

just listen to this user honestly
don't buy AMD and go to /r/buildapc, you won't really get any better reply than this on Sup Forums
the one you linked isn't completely awful apart from the CPU and probably PSU, so you can use it as a decent point of reference

Hey marine, don't you have crayons to eat?

Joking aside, that machine is kind of outdated. If you can get by in one monitor, and want cheap, the Alienware Alpha/Steam Machine does well enough for 1080p.

The 970 is also a hard sell with the 1070 here (or on its way?). Do you have a monitor already?

If it were me, I'd pick up a Dell precision t1700 and throw a new power supply, ssd, and maybe a gtx960 or 1070 or something in it and be done. But it's your money, so do get what makes you happy.

>went into the marines as soon as I was 18

You don't go into the marines like that. But ok whatever helps soothe the pain of being a fat neckbeard with no life like the rest of us.

If you want a pre-built that isn't total shit this might work

Anyone know why amazons urls are totally fucked?

After 9 years of conditioning of my mind being conditioned by Sup Forums, it's very hard for me to browse reddit. I know they can be super helpful but holy fuck they're legit faggots. All they care about is upvotes. I suppose I can give it a try. I know building a pc is always the poplar opinion here but buying something and using it out of the box sounds the most convenient. I'll probably end up building something because that's all I ever see people tell one another here.

You just fried my brain. I suppose if I get that model, go on newegg and get the parts you mentioned, watch how to videos, I'll be better off?

And don't fucking buy AMD right now, Zen is coming out for AMD.

Just read the sticky. Go to logical increments website

The fuck are you on about? How else does anyone join? I mean I did have a 26 year old man in my boot camp platoon by he was in the army before that and going through usmc boot camp is required for any prior service branch who wishes to join the marines.

Possible, but again, it's up to you. If this thread is still alive when I get home, I'll pull out my list and post it.

were you infantry

Holy shit I need to learn to proof read. Kill me now.

I'll do that though. Probably the most sound advice.

Yes. 3/5. I was part of the spring offensive in marjah Afghanistan 2010.

if you can field strip a gun you can assemble a computer, it's not like a submarine

I'll bookmark it. God damn do I have a lot to learn. All I know about computers is how to install extensions on web browsers. I have a lot to learn.

Is it like sex when you build a pc? Anyone who's cleaned their rifle after a firing range knows it's almost like sex.

do you want examples of how not to do it

You dont have to like the place or stay there, just use them for what you need and get out. if it makes you feel better, you are getting something from them and giving nothing back. "a win for a 4chin user hurray" or whatever bullshit you want to say to yourself.

convenient yes but if you want to stay up to date with things, in the long run itll be better to learn to build one/exchange parts. part of being a pc gamer is knowing your machine and maintaining if yourself. live in socal? ill help you out as a fellow marine.

also as this user recommended www.logicalincrements.com

also this. put part A in slot B

Oh and pirating. I'm pretty good at that.

more like trying to safely detonate a landmine with a stick, a very short stick
are you worried yet

I was stationed in Pendleton but I'm back in AZ. I'm on that sub Reddit and literally everyone just sucks each other off god damn. But they do want to help. I give them that much.

I'm sure everyone here has seen this a lot but how fucking... Stupid. Just fucking stupid.

neat. I was a "weekend warrior" at 4th LAR in Pendleton until we got sent to afghan where I became a man (not really, I didnt run into shit myself but our battalion did lose a few bros to fucking sand monkeys)

and yes, you described reddit just now

Everyone says that windows 10 is bullshit and I do have privacy concerns...

you're gaming, and linux is still in its teething phase with gaming, so you're going to have to dual boot with a linux distro for daily driver use and windows 10 for just gaming

its not bullshit (besides the force upgrading). youll need it for better gaming and newer technology. but yes it does invade your privacy worse than the NSA. you can find programs to disable all the privacy breeching shit.

you can disable/change any other things you dont like....just like you could on every other OS previously.

or just use your gaming pc for only gaming and use a laptop for everything else. or buy two computers you have more than enough money (unless you are a complete idiot who spent it all already)

Dual booting is pretty damn easy. You can find video tutorials online. I use Windows for games and Ubuntu for everything else

>and processor

Yea go ahead OP what could go wrong?

pcpartpicker.com/p/sHrxFd

Alright OP, listen up. If you were really a marine you should know that letting someone else make decisions for you is the worst idea ever. That's essentially what buying a prebuilt is.
pcpartpicker.com/parts/partlist/
You want to familiarize yourself with the latest parts, I'll give you a quick rundown because I love you and you're worth it.
CPU is the brain, you want a decent one, but not too good since that shit costs money. Intel i5 is a good standard for gaming. There's two major kinds, K and standard. K models can be overclocked, but cost more and require a special board. Not going K is known as leaving money on the table, because overclocking is price:performance incarnate. AMD CPUs are worthless for gaming, don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
CPU cooler cools the CPU. Watercooling is a meme, get a large piece of metal with a fan on it. Noctua is quiet but quality, Cryorig is cheapish but quality, Coolermaster Hyper 212 Evo is the cheap meme. It just works.
Motherboard, you want something compatible with your CPU, Zxxx if you're overclocking, Hxxx otherwise. Read the fucking reviews. Don't get suckered into spending too much on it.
Memory, or RAM, is RAM. Get the cheapest 16 GB you can. Speed doesn't even matter, just overclock that shit if you were smart and got a real CPU and mobo.
As for storage you want an SSD for your OS and geimus and a HDD for your porn and movies and shitposting materiel. Samsung 850 Evo is the recommended SSD brand, HDD doesn't really matter much, I personally suggest a Seagate Barracuda 2TB, just don't get a 3TB anything ever, it WILL die faster.
Video card is the most important choice for gaymen. Nvidia and AMD are both fine, don't fall for the memes. gpu.userbenchmark.com is decent, don't trust the prices or value rating on it though. Nvidia and AMD are both releasing new lines soon. 10xx Pascal and R9 4xx Polaris. Wait for them, it's worth it.
1/2

2/2
Case doesn't really matter, just don't get absolute garbage or you'll have to modify it to make it work. If the deal seems to good to be true, it is. Read the fucking reviews.
Power supply is important, get a modular EVGA or Seasonic. Fuck everything else. PCPartpicker will hold your hand as far as how powerful it needs to be.
Don't buy an operating system through PCPartpicker. Either pirate it like a normal, functional person, or get a key for $30. Install via USB, no need to waste money on an optical drive.
Good luck.

>no need to waste money on an optical drive.
fuck that
I got close to a terabyte's worth of pirated media written to dvds, and I don't just mean movies
the most annoying thing about a disc drive isn't how fucking slow it reads, it's how fucking noisy it can be

I'll just get a laptop for web browsing. Great idea.

That's actually not a bad deal for those specific components.

PCPartPicker part list: pcpartpicker.com/p/p3j48K

Total: $877.53

I added the 212 Evo since I can't remember if the 8350 comes with a cooler (it probably does but not as good).
Some of the parts aren't the greatest however. The Krait is pretty cheap as far as motherboards go, you could get cheaper RAM that's just as good, and the power supply especially isn't great, not even 80+ certified or Active PFC which is pretty bad by today's standards. It'll probably work fine though.

The 8350 will give you roughly modern i5 performance in things that are properly multi-threaded, and the 970 is alright for gaming at 1080p in most things. Keep in mind new Nvidia GPUs drop in a couple weeks, so it's already outdated. Also new Intel stuff uses DDR4 now, so you're basically a generation behind all around with this system (not that you're going to see some amazing performance bump from the new stuff, just something to think about if you want the latest and greatest to get the most longevity out of things).

If you can spoonfeed me one last time and possibly link me a decent how to video, that'd be awesome.

>things that are properly multi-threaded
>video games
Pick one.

wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php/Build_a_PC
Most of this has already been said in the thread, but can't hurt to post.

I really was a marine. No need to lie. Just thought I would mention it in hopes of softening the assault I was going to get when a Sup Forums newb came to post a thread that probably gets posted 200x a day. And including your post, it seems like everyone here agrees that pc part picker or go home. Thank you for that run down. It's a lot to consider.

How often does new shit drop like this? I already hate the fact that I feel obligated to update my phone every new model that comes out for very small marginal gains. I want to have the new nvidia gpu but if cost does not make up for the performance then I suppose I'll skip it and just get to getting a rig to start building. Thanks for that list, I'll be comparing it with the other one some user posted here and go from there.

>buying AMD CPUs when Zen is around the corner
no

I don't know any how-to videos, what you need to look up is thermal paste application, that's the only annoying part, chart related

if you want to see how not to apply thermal paste, look up MSI, somebody made a webm of an intern fucking it up

the noctua dh-15 comes with decent paste, so you don't need to buy separate

also, don't be scared of creaky noises when pushing the lever lock over the CPU the first time

Sup Forums loves the military, since most of us were fucking idiots and didn't care about school through high school for one reason or another and needed somewhere to go.

>How often does new shit drop like this?
every five years or so, we're entering the beginning of another shakeup thanks to AMD's Zen

Thermal paste? Fuck me I have a lot to learn. But considering I feel like I've missed out on buying a rig and really planting my feet into the hobby, I have to start somewhere.

Well it's meant to be. I expected to get my ass handed to me and I thought just like every thread, I was going to have yo dig for the good information. It's not the case here. Is there many success stories on here from people building their first rig? Is that a daily thread or what? "Muh first rig..."

Well we were using DDR3 for about 5 years, so DDR4 should be the standard for a while, Intel likes to try and drop new CPUs every year or so, but honestly even their CPUs from 5 years ago are fine (if you hang around you'll see plenty of "Sandy Bridge 4 Lyfe" posts). Basically Intel has hit the performance wall and they're only working on power efficiency now, so it's an ideal time to go with them. AMD is trying to catch up on IPC (basically single-thread performance) which is why everyone is saying to wait for Zen.

My personal advice if you're willing to build yourself is go for the best intel system you can right now and you should be set for basically the foreseeable future. I'm sure someone will figure out some new tech that gives us more performance, but literally nobody knows where to start right now, so it's not unreasonable to assume the fastest shit right now will be more or less the fastest shit for the next 5 years again. If you can afford it (probably not for under 1k) X99 is the platform I recently built on, and it's not a bad idea since they can use Xeon CPUs and the new Broadwell-E CPUs that are coming out. It's more expensive but you have more upgrade options if things go from single-thread performance to a zillion cores. Even if you don't though, you'll probably be fine.

Godspeed user and thanks for your service.

you can always go into the guts threads and check out what the insides of other anons PCs look like

Also that list was just the parts in the eBay listing to give you an idea how much they cost to build yourself.

Most HSFs (HeatSinkFans aka CPU coolers) come with thermal paste. As you can see, mayo works so don't worry about it too much. Just put a tiny dot the size of a grain of rice in the middle of the conductive plate and you're golden.

Muh first rig not so much, but clueless idiots posting terrible partslists followed by a bunch of question marks is more than common. Post it in the /sqt/ if this thread isn't up when you have one, people there usually want to help and won't just spam .

pcpartpicker threads crop up from time to time, and the guts thread is always useful for what to do/not to do, and then there's the stupid questions thread

Did somebody say Sandy Bridge?

Picture of your rig?

But that makes a lot of sense and that was pretty much what I thought. But I feel like I'm a shit head if I don't have the latest. It's another reason why I haven't started to get into the hobby until I had good money. I could afford that but I just felt $1000 would be good for a starting rig just to get my feet wet and not to want to kill myself if I fuck something up.

>Just put a tiny dot the size of a grain of rice in the middle of the conductive plate and you're golden.
>tiny dot
Nah. More like a dot that's 25% the total area of the CPU. Let the heatsink smoosh it into spreading.

...

>tfw you missed out on the greatest CPU ever

youtube.com/watch?v=EyXLu1Ms-q4

Right. But I will consider that as compared to another similar post. Just comparing an contrasting. I had no idea that amd was frowned upon.

...

why does everyone say building with AMD is a bad choice? with what in mind?

explain yourselves you niggers.

>felt $1000 would be good for a starting rig

$1000 is perfectly fine for a PC that will last you several years, with the only thing you'll have to upgrade within 5 years is the GPU.

I'm waiting for HBM2 to become standard so I'm fine with what I have right now.

AMD CPU for gaming is fool's gold.
GPU choice is some sort of crazy brand loyalty war I doubt the participants even understand anymore.

Vega soon, fellow waitfag.

That's a solid rig for that price, building something comparible even in PC part picker is tough for the same price.

The worst part of that build is the CPU and the ram is a bit slow. For gaming purposes it will be good though.

Honestly I would say go for it and buy. You wont find anything in that price range that will outperform it drastically.

why buy AMD now when you can wait for Zen

Sure. Sorry for shit camera. Specs as follows:

CPU: Core i7 5820K
RAM: 32GB Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4-2400
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-X99-SLI
GPU: EVGA GeForce GTX 760 ACX (Gonna buy a 1080 probably)
Cooler: Corsair H100i GTX
Case: Corsair Carbide 400C
Storage: Samsung 840 EVO 250GB + Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB
Shitty blinkenlights: NZXT Hue+

Storage and GPU were hold-overs from my old system I've spent about 1k on this system already so you can see how quick you can go over that amount on a new one. Like I said tho, even a Skylake build should be fine. Just you'll more likely need to buy a new motherboard again next time you upgrade the CPU.

why didn't you crop it, fucking neet ricefag

It's not a solid rig. Terrible case and questionable power supply, you don't know what it's been through.

>Rainbow unicorn litebrite LEDs

Intothetrash.meme

Forgot PSU: EVGA Supernova P2 650W 80+ Platinum

I basically went all out honestly. I do 3D work and fuck around in Unreal Engine 4 a lot so I wanted something geared for that.

That's fucking sexy. Thank you for posting. I swear to god I used to dream of having a build like this when I was in Afghanistan. That picture got me motivated as fuck.

...

Well I want to start doing video editing as my main hobby. I've also dreamed of making a YouTube channel for retro video games in a comedic way (kill me now) but I know you have to have a nice build to edit video.

Don't fall for the windowed case, you don't need a window in your case. Pic related is more along the lines of what you really need.

Hell yeah put mine in an x shape for XTREME temp reduction

pcpartpicker.com/p/cPG32R
Something else to chew on. Not my best work but I'm tired and just threw something together so you can have a few things to work off of.

o-only 5-6 more months until Zen comes out and we can start telling people to wait for the next thing

damn it feels good to be a waitfag

I love window cases though. Something about being able to see the guts turns me on. But I've always liked shit like that. Like those old phones that's in the clear shell or a few tub televisions where you can see the insides as well I don't know why but I've been getting off to that shit since I was young and first saw pic related.

OP buy this (it is much better than the above one) and put it together yourself (it will be easy)

pcpartpicker.com/p/tRyp9W

If you don't like the white case you can change it to a corsair 200r or just pick the black verison of the case.

You can thank me later and inb4 fags here bitch at me for picking windows 10 for you.

You like it because it feels futuristic and very punk.

As long as you're not editing 4K even a solid gaming build with a good CPU and 16GB of RAM will be fine, but if you want to specialize then yeah more RAM and fast storage is important. IIRC just about any modern GPU is good enough for GPU-accelerated rendering. I think LinusTechTips (inb4 rage) did a test and found that there was basically no difference between a cheap $150 GPU and a $700 GPU for that stuff.

Lmao
Thank you. I'm taking everyone who wishes to help me help/recommendations into consideration. I'll definitely look at this when I'm done comparing another one that was already posted.

you're not explaining anything, just giving retarded sounding opinions.

because some people actually need a computer now?

93.89 dollarydoos for an operating system? fuck that
h110 mobo that can't overclock? fuck that

>pcpartpicker.com/p/cPG32R
>pcpartpicker.com/p/cPG32R

These two are solid excluding the barracuda which is a horrible unreliable piece of shit hard drive.

R9 380 and i5 4690k, 8gb of ddr3 and a z97 atx mobo with an nzxt s340 case + a 630w psu from thermaltake ur done

Thermaltake Smart SE 630w

>inb4 thats a bad psu
Powered my fucking Fury X and i7 6700k for months playing games at 4k

You really think a new PC builder is going to waste his time pirating a copy of windows? The guy just wants a basic build that will be easy to set up and game with. Not everybody here is a meme loving linux pirating windows douchebag.

Also I didn't know the h110 couldn't overclock but if your budget is under 1000$ don't expect a very good motherboard because even the ones that can OC are still pieces of shit in that price range.

I feel you man, here's my old guts from my first build. I went for the "Windows are for man-children" route and didn't give a shit about the internals. It worked well but every time I cracked it open it just made me kinda sad. Now I look at the new one and it just makes me feel happy, and that's the important thing.

I can pirate decently but pirating an operating system does seem like the last thing I want to do right now. Even though I'm sure it works just fine to do it that way, it's one of those things where I will feel it's not authentic and if anything were to go wrong software wise id bland it on my pirated OS

Yeah man that looks sexy too. Why would you want to hide that shit? That's a shame. It might be for man children but that's one thing I'll gladly accept if it means I have a window.

I don't know wtf I was trying to say by, "I can pirate decently..."

R9 390>GTX 970
8GB of ram will be enough

Final build for you OP take it or leave it, you won't get anything better.

>pcpartpicker.com/p/yW7Ycc

>You really think a new PC builder is going to waste his time pirating a copy of windows?
Yes.
Because that's what I did the first time.

There is literally nothing wrong with the average Barracuda. There was a large, defective line of 3TB Barracudas which gave them a bad name. Under no circumstances should you buy one, as the supply is still tainted.

This is insanely good, but the lack of a SSD is a bit of a downer, especially if you plan to do VR. That being said, you can always pick one up later.

Eh, I didn't like the non-painted case interior and lack of grommeted holes, also none of the colors matched. Blue motherboard, Red RAM, Silver PSU with a purple sticker, and Black & Gunmetal GPU. I'm a big fan of color-themed internals. Back then it was more difficult, these days most places go with Black + Red/Blue/Yellow/White stuff so it was easy to find parts that matched that were just as good and just as cheap, so I went for matching colors where I could.
