Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook). ---- If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance). Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™
Recommended models: T420 - 14", normal size X220 - 12.5", lightweight ---- Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops) >Used machines are plentiful and cheap. >Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet. >Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels. >Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models. >Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop. >Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain. >The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). win 7 32 bit idles at like 380-400MB of ram
Blake Turner
Hey guys, I fell for the meme and purchased a X220 today. I want to upgrade the RAM and the HDD to a SDD. What are some trusted brands to put into my machine?
Liam Young
I idle at 188MB with debian jessie and xfce
Hunter James
So help me out guys, I got a t400 and for the time ever I'm going to actually start taking steps to replace a hard drive myself...... I have never ever done anything like this. Is this a good ssd?
Also I've been googling it for a while how hard would it be for me to permanently mess things up?
Anthony Moore
Crucial or Samsung for SSD. The Samsung 850 is probably your best bet. Some people over in /csg/ have some Chingchong brand (KingDian?) that is fast and so far has been very reliable. Make sure it's a 7mm drive.
If you're not doing intense disk I/O tasks (and don't need wireless WAN), consider an mSATA SSD. It's SATA2 but it leaves the drive bay open for a big fucking mechanical drive for storage, which apparently you will already have.
RAM - pretty much anything is fine. Hynix is what it probably came with. I think there's a BIOS mod that lets you use faster RAM, so look into that before buying anything.
Robert Bell
According to the wiki you need a 1.8" SSD. Yours is 2.5
Cameron Peterson
I assume you're a Windowsbabby, so the drive migration software it comes with will probably work fine for you.
Wouldn't he just need an external hard drive enclosure or ultrabay caddy to plug in and copy the data?
Henry Diaz
bummer, thanks
I guess......gotta start somewhere.
Dominic Morales
Is 250 too much for a 420 spotless and with ssd and webcam
Jonathan Diaz
So ive got a pentium m 755 2ghz for my t42 ive got 2gb of ram ive got the 128mb igpu motherboard
but can i put an SSD in it? how do i get an SSD for a t42? where can i get XP from? will my current XP key on the back of the laptop work with any XP download?
Matthew Baker
>tfw if I sell my old 2010 MBP I can buy an X220
Henry Gray
also, what all can i put in the pccard slot, or the pci e x1 slot? i dont use wifi anyway so i could probably put something cooler in there like a small sd card reader
Thomas Reed
w2c key for my x200 ultrabase?
went to the site lel-novo redirects you too, but don't see the ultrabase option after inputting the stuff they ask for.
Jackson Sullivan
I've been notified that my T430 just left the States. So excited. I can't wait to put in a 3632QM, replace the keyboard, install an alienware screen and then use it to browse porn. All the parts are here waiting.
Zachary Bell
Keys are a bitch. Drill the fucker out if you don't care about it looking a bit ugly.
Gavin Torres
didn't quite want to take that route, at least the thing is unlocked i guess.
Andrew Hall
Oh, if it's already unlocked then don't bother wrecking shit. I had to drill out my Advanced Dock because it didn't come with keys and was locked on arrival. Worth it in the end, considering I paid $40 for mine while other listings on ebay wanted $100+.
PATA SSDs exist. Don't know if it's worth it from a performance standpoint, but it might be as compared to a 7200RPM drive.
Get an unfucked Windows XP SP3 from torrents and compare the MD5sums. I don't think you can download it from MS servers anymore. Maybe there's an archive link somebody can provide. Your key will work if it's the same version of XP (Home or Pro OEM).
Don't put shit in holes you don't need. They just eat power, even at idle. T42 is already crunched for battery life.
Something like this might work for you for an unneeded PCIe slot if you actually need the storage space:
>Word and Excel simultaneously I think he's a troll. A Dothan could do that shit and look better because of the 4:3.
Joseph Rodriguez
>mfw you bought 4 X220's for the price of one MacBook
Maybe... 8GB ram, but even then too much IMO unless you don't care
Luke Lewis
I'm happy with Patriot and Adata...
Though I've used Samsung, Intel, Crucial in the past, I don't know what's in my T430s atm.
TPF servers a shit... Maybe resend it? Shouldn't take too long, check spam?
Kevin Perry
Where do I buy IPS replacement screen for X220?
Matthew Fisher
that sucks man, guess it's fine like this. got a key with another dock and kinda liked it, even though it wasn't of much use in my setup.
Gabriel Harris
Is a x230/ 4g ram/ i5 for 230$ a good deal?
Nathan Ortiz
The T400 uses a standard 2.5" hard drive. I've replaced the one on mine twice now, and I can say without a shadow of doubt that the standard size is just fine.
I put a Samsung 840 Evo in my T400 and so far it's been performing just fine. Completely revitalized the computer, feels way faster than my W520 (which is still using the original Seagate 500GB hard drive... with over 30,000 power-on hours)
I've actually been thinking of getting a Crucial MX200 mSATA SSD and leaving my mech drive in. Is there an easy way to migrate Windows over, or am I going to have to take an afternoon to reinstall everything?
Eli Morris
Does anyone know if there's a quality difference between the Tx and Bx line of X220 IPS displays? All I could find is that the Tx line uses AH-IPS while the Bx line uses E-IPS. No measurements or anything.
Christian Green
Clean install is always better, but you can transfer it over. The Amazon link says the MX200 comes with an activation code for Acronis that you can use to copy your existing drive over.
I'm using samsung evo 256GB ssd in my x220 and it's been working fine and it fit my poorfag budget. And yeah x220 is the best laptop i've ever owned. Did you get ips screen?
Ethan Williams
>tfw muh feminism bitches wouldn't let this commercial exist in the year of vaginacracy 2016 >feelsbadman

just got my T430 today, I fucking love it. Thinklight is the shit. I am new on thinkpads so I don't care about the keyboard at all.
Playing Touhou on bed right now, serious business.
I feel like blog posting today. Have a good day Sup Forums
Luis King
Good shit, I like it it when others go business class.
Christopher White
Nice nice Getting a t430 either today or tomorrow
Ryder Brooks
Yeah, did all that. Even tried with another email adress from a different IP. Still no luck
Nolan Gray
>The T400 uses a standard 2.5" hard drive. I've replaced the one on mine twice now, and I can say without a shadow of doubt that the standard size is just fine. That's good to know, thanks.
Dominic Jackson
I think your retarted.
Nolan Flores
500gb samsung 850 evo is the best price to capacity so go with that.
Blake Davis
not getting a free t40 form a hooker.
Angel Jones
Will the keyboard light still work after installing Linux? I'm gonna install Debian with Xfce DE
Jace Jones
what does that even mean.
Elijah Reed
tfw you make a terrible decision.
Jaxson Hernandez
I will be getting a T420 from newegg with the 8gb ram and ssd installed for $277 this week. When should I get a caddy and add a hdd? I'm going to use it to learn GNU/Linux, develop isometric rpg's, and web design. Am I doing this Sup Forums thing right?
Logan Jackson
Do you have this image with an x220? or do you know where i could find one?
Easton Murphy
last link of the op
Caleb Hughes

Leo Wright
No, all Linux users can't type on their ThinkPad. Really inconvenient but Linux is worth it
Camden Cook
>linux + thinkpad user >needing to look at their keyboard to type
wut
Connor Gray
Thats how much i paid for my X230, free shipping too. Mine was in absolute pristine condition though but it came with a 6 cell battery :(
Easton Hill
I got it from a list on imgur. The x220 was on there.
Nicholas Clark

2012 mbps are sweet ass laptops, I'd buy one, slam 16GB in it and have the best mac.
Luis Watson

Dominic Morales

Jose Diaz
>tfw i was considering getting one just to be the weird fag who has one
Michael Parker
If it had the IBM logo I would have gone for it.
Jack Hernandez
literally the same as wearing this
Angel Harris
Yeah, but you can wear it in public without getting arrested.
Ryder Richardson
Sup /tpg/. I need a new laptop, and I've considered purchasing the recommended t420. The Thinkpad will be used at home and school. Should I get one with the Intel HD 3000 or the dedicated nvidia? I want to play games like osu and League of Legends. Don't care much about texture details, as long as it runs them smoothly. Also, will the Nvidia gpu drain lots more power than the HD 3000? Thank you.
Gavin Gonzalez
Get the nvidia no matter what, you cna always disable it since all T420 laptops have intel graphics on their cpu even with an nvidia chip.
Jace Sanders
So my company has given me the choice of T460S, X1 Carbon or the Thinkpad Yoga 460/ 14 inch.
Which one out of them is more durable and dosen't throttle/overheat like a bitch when I compile or run something computationally intensive for about 5minutes. Would like the screen to look alright. not a photographer.
Elijah Wright
T460s is the obvious choice here.
Jayden Moore
My chances of getting a T450s are slimming down as I was offered a refurbished one but the supply isn't reliable (waiting quite a bit already) I was offered as alternative a HP EliteBook 840 G3
What do
I generally dislike HPs since most of the stuff I saw with people so far wasn't very durable
Last time I purchased a laptop was a Vaio TZ in fucking 2008 and is still working, original battery holding for over 4h and snappy as ever after a ssd and ram upgrade some years ago.
Kevin Russell
Going to get myself a T460p this weekend. I'm so excited.
Landon Gonzalez
Do post back regarding cooling and throttling. I've read on reviews that it gets very hot- 70 degrees.
Kayden Watson
That's literally my only concern. I'll post back after some use.
Sebastian Price
thanks buddy! Best of luck. don't forget thinkpad fan control
Ryan Perry
Thanks! (I'm actually buying after reading the model with dgpus have extra cooling capabilities that make a slight difference) MAY ALLAH HAVE MERCY ON MY SOUL
Grayson Young
I'm interested in getting a T420 myself. Where can I find one without a battery/adapter/hdd/ram? I was hoping to get one with an iGPU and i5. Hell, if it doesn't have a display and keyboard that's fine by me. I want to buy my own 900p display and cable, ssd, adapter, batteries, keyboard, and RAM. I just want one in good condition.Seeing as how Newegg has a functional refurb with all the stuff for $300, I think I'd be willing to spend $150 - $200 on a good quality T420. Anyone know of a stable supply of them?
Ryder Cooper
70 degrees is really not all that hot. My T400 used to hit 90 after a few hours of gaming. That may have contributed to the death of the fan, but only after a good 6 years.
Angel Ross
I'm in the same situation as user, been looking at the samsung 850 is it worth getting the PRO version ?
Luke Kelly
Buy a broke down or stripped on off eBay.
Josiah Johnson
I would like to buy a new battery for my old x220t I bought a few years back. My current one barely lasts a full hour. Any input on my available options?
Jack Martinez
Well familia, I hope you upgraded it properly
Ian Cruz
I remember an user replacing his 420 screen with an alienware one I think. Does anyone have any info on that?
Samuel King
Well I did it guys. I've been bothering Yall with questions but finally bit and got a t420 I'm excited almost no scratches at all and ssd can't wait to play with it.
Julian Green
yeah, unlike you with your nonIPS nonFHD screen
Henry Cook
Now buy a gun and a giant dildo and post in EDC threads.
Jaxon Rodriguez
If you didn't buy the gun and dildo beforehand, your priorities are way off.
