Making my own (linux) OS

Well Sup Forumsentlemen;
After installing Gentoo I feel the time has come for me to finally try and make my own distro using Linux From Scratch.

Any suggestions?

Install Gentoo.

Try to make a distro that's actually good for once.

Already done that friend.
Yes I am aware of the meme.

Everyone has their own preferences; there is literally not one distro everyone likes.

why not making your own distro
just host your own repo and select your own packages, it's that simple!

Great, another Linux distro...

Do you think it's easy to maintain a distro? You really think you can do it aibglw-hanfedly? Linux From Scratch is more of a curiosity for those who want to experiment with Linux. Your distro won't be secure, or stable, or up to date, or 'just work'.

By all means, make a LFS for fun. Then scrap it and go make a Fedora remix, or another flavor of Debian/Ubuntu. So you can have a package manager, security updates, and it will actually be somewhat stable.

Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Edubuntu, Xubuntu, Lubuntu, Mint, etc. They're all just flavors of Debian, for example, and you still call them a distro. Make something like that and it will be your own distro.

To make a new distro from nothing is a gargantuan task. Look at void Linux. It's a decent distro, for sure, but it's lacking in packages, documentation, support, updates, etc. They have dozens of people making it, yet it's still in its infancy.

Good luck in whatever you choose to do.

no one dislikes debian

all reasons to dislike it are memes

>aibglw-hanfedly
Do use spell check when posting

but muh pacman is so much better than that outdated useless garbage apt

if you want a good os use windows

thank you for stating the truth my friend

Yes. With apt you have to actively fuck around with your sources.list and preferences, but pacman automagically fucks up your whole system for you every update, giving you the false sense of importance you crave as you spend hours copy-pasting shit from google to fix all the things that just broke.

>but muh pacman is so much better than that outdated useless garbage apt
Pacman is shit compared to Portage.

Ancient packages.

>I have no idea what I am talking about, and must spout outdated memes in place of actual facts: the post

Touched a nerve there, did I?

This.

A mix of GoboLinux and NixOS. Arch please. Take the nice PKGBUILD specification from Arch and user a proper scripting language (Python), the kernel patches from GoboLinux and the symlinks for a better directory structure and multiversion-installations and NixOS for all the neat stuff it does too.

It'll be an interesting experience, especially for diving deep down into Linux. Just make sure you read the documentation carefully and try not to take any shortcuts.

No, in fact you didn't.
It's funny how you think you're being unique and creative with that little jab up there, when in fact it's just an overused, outdated meme that people who have no idea what they're talking about use.

Too scared to use testing/sid?

"Arch primarily appeals to NEETs too stupid to make the leap to Slackware/Gentoo as it gives them a false sense of purpose putting out all the self-created fires caused by their intentionally broken OS" isn't a meme. it's the cold truth.

>I have never used pacman

One more dumb sentence out of you and this turns into a desktop thread.

You're literally too stupid to insult.

Who are you even quoting fatty.

> putting the " " to make your inane opinion seem more legit

:^)

>it's the cold truth.
You couldn't even begin to back that up lol

Arch babby detected, install gentoo or off yourself

There's a reason Arch is not used in any sort of production environment and it's not because all those fuddy-duddy sysadmins and programmers are too set in their stupid old ways. It's because they want to use their systems to do useful work rather than spend all their time beating their os into some vague semblance of functionality.
Obviously you don't have this problem because you have no useful work to do.

...

...

>There's a reason Arch is not used in any sort of production environment
Okay, and that's a bad thing why?
>Obviously you don't have this problem because you have no useful work to do
I have work during the week and still managed to get Arch setup over a single weekend, kys my man

>Do use spell check when posting

Heh, I thought the spell-checker would catch that one. I guess it was too fucked up for it.

Sober as a judge, unfortunately.

absolutely rekt

>I managed to get Arch setup over a single weekend
>a weekend to set up your os
This is bait, right?

...

I'm actually surprised no one said it.

LFS is what you're looking for OP.

...

2 hours total probably
>inb4 hurr 2 hours to set up an OS?!

...

Not him but it takes me ~15 mins to setup Arch Cinnamon with Architect

...

Yeah, but I just do the normal install. That time also includes getting everything else like WM and other miscellaneous things setup.

...

...

...

...

>Arch Cinnamon
>"m-muh minimalism"
>proceeds to install colossal bloated DE

...

Where the fuck did I mention minimalism, faggot?

...

...

...

>installs distro noted for minimalist filosofee
>bloats it up
>"i-i didn't want it to be minimalist anyway"

...

...

>Noted for minimalist philosophy
Where exactly did you see it's noted for minimalism, you mouth breathing dumb piece of shit?

>People only use software for its philosophy

...

...

...

>I am so butthurt that I corrected the obviously intentional misspelling of philosophy in a vain effort to make myself look intelekshual

...

...

Back to cluless underage fuckwit. Comeback when you can hold an adult conversation.

...

...

...

...

>Comeback
Notwithstanding the typo. that was a particularly poor one. I would tell you to try harder, but as Arch users repeatedly demonstrate, trying really really hard is no guarantee that anything good will come of it.

Apparently you can't even communicate like a normal person. First you imply I'm hypocritical for using a DE in Arch because you thought I said Arch is minimal. When I asked where I said it is minimal, you said Arch is """"noted"""" for being minimal.
Well it's minimal to some extent but when I asked where you got this "note", you turn on complete damage control and start straw man: "M-Mah Sup Forums-tier misspell satire"

In fact you don't have a single clue what you are talking about.

You just came here to shitpost, from the very beginning.

pacman does not fuck up your system, you learnt that from popular Sup Forums-memes.
In fact you never even used pacman.

Get the fuck out

I actually have to stop spamming desktops to chime in here. I fully agree with what you say and the tard you are arguing against obviously has no clue about either Arch or how to lead a good discussion -- I assume he's probably an only child and never got good at leading discussions because of it.

I also am 99% sure that it's the 40 BMI fatty who keeps creating the AHG threads. Picture related.

Be assured in the fact that I know you won this discussion after your first reply.

>pacman does not fuck up your system, you learnt that from popular Sup Forums-memes.
>In fact you never even used pacman.
Nailed 95% of Arch haters

Holy shit, Is this for real
hahahahaha

Yep, it is -- you can usually find him posting the tired and old 4-5 antiarch meme pictures, and then claiming he isn't the fatty.

> you won this discussion after your first reply.

The discussion was won at
anything after that is just window-dressing and Arch users scrambling to justify taking a weekend to install their OS.

Sure fatty :^) -- good argument.

>taking a weekend
see Have you ever dealt with vanilla Xfce? Takes way too long to look half decent

10/10

>gnome

k tard

>vanilla Xfce Takes way too long to look half decent
So use a more modern DE then. I'm sure you can spare the CPU cycles since it's not like you're doing any useful work on your machine.

>installs distro noted for minimalist filosofee
Arch is the opposite of minimalist.

lists.archlinux.org/pipermail/arch-general/2015-July/039443.html

Cinnamon is a modern DE. Can you think before you actually post, shameless retard?

HAHAHAHA i use both testing and arch, testing is so far behind

it's suposed to be simple, not minimalist...

fag

install whiskermenu, apply theme

>nobody mentions arch or pacman until you show up
hilarious

best part is pacman has nothing to do with the date of the packages, nor does aptitude. They're called repos for a reason.

>Superkey won't bring up whiskermenu
>Cancerous panel
>Cancerous screen tearing
>Enable thunar volman
>Install gvfs or say goodbye to automount
>Now install and enable networkmanager applet
>Wew lad you haven't configured a shortcut for terminal
>Install tumbler, increase maximum size for file preview.
>Wew lad time to assign keyboard shortcuts for volume control
>Firefox tab looks like vomit so change your shit theme unless you want one more addon
>wait until next gtk update fucks your DE

> make superkey bring up whiskermenu instead of ctrl+superkey
> why
> fixed by most gpu drivers
> sudo apt-get install/pacman -S gnome-disk-utility
> volume keys always worked out of the box for me
> too lazy/unknowing to answer the rest and you're probably partially right with that.

>make superkey bring up whiskermenu instead of ctrl+superkey
>>Not just superkey shortcut

>Puke inducing defalut panel
>>why

>fixed by most gpu drivers
>>tears anyway

>gnome-disk-utility
>>Not just gvfs
>volume keys always worked out of the box for me
You never really configured Xfce, have you?

most of your complains are just about usual fresh-install-configuring though.
it sure looks ugly as hell, but one of xfce's advantages is easy customization to make it look decent and usable with a few clicks.
dont have noticable screen tearing with a proprietary amd driver.

> You never really configured Xfce, have you?
it's been some time so i'm actually trying on a virtualbox now
