/fglt/ - Friendly GNU/Linux Thread

Previously on: Welcome to /fglt/. We are always open to users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

There are four ways to try GNU/Linux, you can:

0) Install a GNU/Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
1) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full GNU/Linux experience".
2) Dual-boot GNU/Linux with Windows/Mac (recommended if you want to learn more about GNU/Linux)
3) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with GNU/Linux

Before asking, please search for answers to your questions in resources.

Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.

Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe WINE can make up for it.

First for rms is a p. cool dude

Why does he take pictures like this? What kind of autist carries their laptop everywhere pretending to do work everywhere?

he obviously didn't take this picture. he doesn't like to rest.

>It's that guys again.

>mom i posted it again

>Test this media & start Korora 23 x86_64 GNOME
>select
>black screen with small white underline in top right
What do?

burn it to a dvd disc.
it's the most fail proof way of making bootable media

What if this is not an option?

I just realized that I'm retarded; this should work for everyone:

:() {
whatis $(shuf -n 1 -e /bin/* /usr/bin/* /usr/local/bin/* \
| sed 's/.*\///' \
) 2>/dev/null \
|| :
}; :

then use dd or cp to make a bootable usb-drive. you used unetbootin right?

No.
I used LiveUsb Creator or something.
The fedora one.

...

The default UI font in XnViewMP changed from some normal font to picrelated about a month ago. There's no option to change it in the settings.

Anybody know how to fix this abomination?

What's so difficult about dd? It's just dd if=image.iso of=/zip-disquette; sync, right?

I don't why so many people prefer gui programs.

Is that a sympathetic or apathetic noose?

>many people prefer gui programs
Majority is incompetent. Always.

Check your fontconfig. You can force all fonts in your system with it.

Nvm, changed the font to Ubuntu through the style sheet.
My eyes, they can see again.

...

Right Tool For The Job™ strikes again.

Feel free to suggest a feature-compatible alternative, I'm all ears.

>using a non free image viewer

Where the hell do you find so many rms pics?

Post what you use, fag.

not him but it's just an image viewer, what can it do that viewnior, mpv, gnome image viewer, feh or anything else can't?

What do you even need?

I use Nomacs and it does more than I need from it. All I wanted from an image viewer is the ability to view, resize and crop images quickly. Using GIMP for resizing and cropping is overkill.

That depends on the toolkit this was compiled with.
Is it Qt, GTK or some own proprietary thing?

If it's some proprietary toolkit you have to look in the software's settigns.

wget -r -P ~/wget/ -A jpg,jpeg,gif,png,webm,webp,opus,mp3 --level=1 --execute robots=off ‐‐refer=google.com --user-agent="Mozilla/5.0 Firefox/4.0.1" rms.sexy/img

Lotsa things. Heavy-ish editing, batch processing, all with a very customizeable interface.

>it does more than I need from it
>All I wanted from an image viewer
Perhaps you should consider that I have different needs and thus I use different software.

No way! LOL
Thanks for that

you could just use an image editor and an image viewer like a normal person. also why would you want to customize any image viewer? all it has to do is display images.

It's 3AM, you're going to have to get better bait to get a (You) out of me.

you are hurting yourself by using a proprietary image VIEWER to do heavy image editing. your fault.

quite dislike these desu

Still shit bait. Can you try just a bit harder?

then remove them.

Dual booting ubuntu mate and windows 10 through uefi

How would I remove ubuntu now?

tyil: how is funtoo compared to gentoo?
it's fun
...too
AYYYYY
:D
* hooman has quit (Quit: kiwiirc.com/ - A hand crafted IRC client)

get in here we're having a lot of fun.
(we're also really lonely.)
irc.freenode.net #flt

why would this be bait? you are genuinely using a tool that is worse at image editing than gimp and worse at image viewing than viewnior. there is no reason to use a proprietary image viewer no matter how you put it.

i can't connect to freenode for some reason.

what client are you using?

Guys, does linux (debian in my case) has separate file for hibernation like hiberfil.sys on windows, for example? Or it is using designated swap partition for hibernation?

polari/empathy

Finally, man.

>worse at image editing than gimp and worse at image viewing than viewnior
I agree with the first point (viewnior is hot ass trash garbage), but it's all irrelevant anyway.
Why? Because one program that can do both good is better. I think XnViewMP is a stellar image viewer and as a great bonus it has some sick editing features that would take me orders of magnitude longer to perform in GIMP or any other editing suite.

>there is no reason to use a proprietary image viewer
Unless it's good. Did you ever think about such possibility?

literally never heard of it.
are you connecting to:
irc.freenode.net:6667

How can I change the default background colors of less?

less is a terminal application
Do you want to configure your terminal?

It just dumps it all to swap.

But less has color options, I supposed it can be done independently of the terminal, or it isn't?

>No longer programs
>Does everything through emacs

I love RMS and all but damn that is some autism.

HO. I never played with it.

> Replying with memes instead of answering the question

It's a genuine question and I'd like to know as well

What did you just call me?

kek, I think he meant oh, and that was for me user

...

You can pass it the -R flag which will make it interpret colour control characters properly if a program has colourful output. But there's no changing what colours it can use---that's up to your terminal.

this question is asked on Sup Forums and especilly in this thread so often that everybody assumes that it is a troll question, especially if it is as loaded as in this case.
rms answers a lot of emails, manages the fsf, posts on the mailinglists, organizes his speeches and manages his website.

I know he's very busy and must spend a lot of time on his computer(s), but why all the photographs of him using it in odd locations, like in the middle of the woods? Is he actually so busy that he's using his computer 100% of the time, even during recreation?

It's pretty much undocumented, but you can use termcaps.

Example:

export LESS_TERMCAP_mb=$(tput bold; tput setaf 1)
export LESS_TERMCAP_md=$(tput bold; tput setaf 3)
export LESS_TERMCAP_me=$(tput sgr0)
export LESS_TERMCAP_so=$(tput smso)
export LESS_TERMCAP_se=$(tput rmso)
export LESS_TERMCAP_us=$(tput smul; tput setaf 7)
export LESS_TERMCAP_ue=$(tput rmul; tput sgr0)
export LESS_TERMCAP_mr=$(tput rev)
export LESS_TERMCAP_mh=$(tput dim)
export LESS_TERMCAP_ZN=$(tput ssubm)
export LESS_TERMCAP_ZV=$(tput rsubm)
export LESS_TERMCAP_ZO=$(tput ssupm)
export LESS_TERMCAP_ZW=$(tput rsupm)

Through it into your ~/.bashrc.

More info:
- man termcap
- man terminfo

Note that his will also affect manpages if your pager is less.

I guess this is how he spends the time between speeches in remote countries. People like to photograph him this way.

Best way of getting any GNU/Linux distros working on CyanogenMod13

I also asked in /tpg/, but I'll ask here, too. Anyone have recommendations for which distro is best on the x61s? I'm mostly concerned with potential difficulties associated with the x series.

I only have experience with Mint and Puppy, and I like both of them. Tried Ubuntu and hated it so much I uninstalled it the same day I installed it.

any distro should work. pick a DE/WM you like and choose a distro with a good community and a lot of packages in the main repo.

Is there a way to prevent gnome shell from creating copies of every single image I set as a background? That doesn't make any sense, it creates the copies in the same folder and does not delete old created copies after switching to another wallpaper. 3.20.1, btw.

So I recently decided to jump on the train; tabs for idention and spaces for aligment.

Now my problem is that a lot of my source code is writte with spaces only.

Is there a way to batch convert it?

>tabs for idention
code monkey

In vim you can do
:%s/ /\t/g
Where that gap is the number of spaces you use per tab
You can also use sed -i on the command line (look up some examples---sed is very powerful)

Why? Did I fell for some meme?

Thank you, worked with vim.

>Why? Did I fell for some meme?
no.
tabs > spaces

i think (not sure) this depends on the folder you do it from and how you set it. if you set your wallpaper from viewnior or feh, it should not be duplicated.

>tabs for idention and spaces for aligment.
NIGGER YOU WHAT
You don't fucking mix tabs and spaces.
Spaces > tabs.

All the good coders I saw used 2 spaces. I never see a good developer who do not use 2 spaces.

>everbody has to read my code the way I want
tabs are superior, you can change the ident however you want it with whatever editor, do this this spaces

s/this/with/

>2 spaces

4 spaces, get off my lawn with your tabs and 1,2,3,5,6,7,8,16,32 spaces, niggers

You never coded on strange environment, otherwise you would spit on tabs. If you never coded on strange environment it's because you need your comfort.
>implying you suck

You have probably never meet a good coder.

>do this this spaces
>s/this/with/
>do with with spaces

tabs: I'm social and care about others
spaces: My convenience > everyone else

Is RMS a tabs or spaces guy?
If spaces, how many?
I need to know!

2 spaces
Have you use emacs once in your life?

Sup Forums approved vpn?

GNU/Linux is a meme. Even the face of it is a living meme, just look at him haha.

>emacs only allows 2 spaces

>haha

openvpn

That isnt a vpn, that is vpn software, which you clearly knew i was asking about
(you)

>Best way of getting any GNU/Linux distros working on CyanogenMod13
Anyone
Debian Kit is down
lil debi wont install

the only VPN you can trust is your own, so get a memeberry with openvpn and put it somewhere where it doesn't get seen.

kek:

>using vpn on your same network

Sup Forums approved? Hola
Just use Tor, buddy. Tor is live, Tor is love.
Snowden is using it, RMS is using it, you should use it.

# DAE:
alias wget="curl -O"
# ?

>tor
I dont want fbi visits
>tor
Yeah, using tor for daily use is acceptable at 1kb/s on average..

If you had read the manpages of wget and curl, you would realize that these are different programs for different purposes.

man unexpand

>I dont want fbi visits
You fell for Sup Forums memes.

>same network
i never implied that, you can just hide it at some uni or in some other place with wifi.

I'm unable to use IRC and Bitmask. I don't know why.
I travelled from my house, to another yesterday. When I tried to connect these services here, I can't!
Help, please?

What's the best linux media server?
Needs to do some transcoding too.

Been using Universal Media Server on my windows machine, but I don't want to put java on my ubuntu server.

I know, I've read both of them.
I'm asking because I saw this here:
github.com/paulirish/dotfiles/blob/master/.aliases
And I want to see if this is a common thing.
