What do you guys think about gaming on a laptop?

I'm a CS major, will be a junior this fall, and I need a new laptop for coding during and between classes. I also want to be able to play games on it. I have a $2k-2.3k budget. I was thinking about getting the MSI - GT72S Dominator Pro G-219. Specs: 1TB Hard Drive + 128GB Solid State Drive, Intel Core i7 2.7gHz, 16 GB DDR4 RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980M 8GB, for $2199

I could build a PC for much cheaper but I really need a laptop for school. I guess another option would be building a decent PC and buying a shitty laptop, but that would probably be over my budget. Is it worth it buying a laptop for gaming? Thanks guys.

Buy a gaming computer for 1k, and then buy a slightly shittier laptop for 1k.

You can get all those specs for half the price on a desktop. Gaming on a laptop is also pretty ass because battery life tends to be

>gaming
Go to the library and pick up chicks brah

Really fucking retarded. You can build an FM2+ desktop for like $400 with a graphics card that can handle most modern games on medium-high 1080p settings.

For that same performance you need to blow $1,000+ on a fucking "gaming" laptop that has a permanent CPU, GPU, and constantly throttles because of the tiny fans.

I do CS, which means half of the people in my lectures have gaming laptops, which have noisy fans, look like they're going to fall off the little desks we have, are always on minimum brightness (I see these guys checking the battery meter every 10 minutes), and are just as slow as any other laptop once they're a couple of years old.

The other half have macbooks/surfaces/ipads and don't have any of these problems.

Thanks for the input guys. I'm just going to build a PC with similar specs for much cheaper. I have a Macbook Pro now, so I'll just keep that for school until I can afford a decent Windows laptop.

You did good OP.

Gaming laptops are a waste of money. Not as powerful as a desktop, noisier heavier and hotter than a normal laptop, more expensive than both. Can't believe people fall for this shit.

>gaming laptop
>tiny as fuck screen
>expensive as fuck
>trash garbage desktops will outperform that shit

Gaming laptops are made to rob retards and entitled children's parents out of their money

Oh yeah I forgot they're heavy, hot and have terrible battery life, so basically you have a $1500 desktop that performs worse than regular desktops half the price with the added bonus of terrible keyboard and no mouse.

Anything else is trash

Not OP but GTX 960m, 970m, or 980m? Which to get? Resolution will be 1080p. Games like Fallout 4, Doom, Need For Speed, etc.

>I'm a CS major,
>play games
Why am I not surprised?

GT72S G-219 is a pretty good model desu, I can play most games on high/ultra and it can handle decent overclocking on both the CPU and GPU

rofl

tfw i was one of those...
tfw i know im was stupid

i learned though

here's what I post when I want to trigger people

>gaming
total cancer get the fuck out

>tfw i know im was stupid

I'll get my wife a razer edge and razer core.

She can have my gtx 980 when I upgrade to the gtx 1080

I have a ux305 for school and a desktop for gaming. you can get a ux305 for 700 bucks and spend the other 1300 on a fucking nice desktop.

user who fell for the gaymen laptop meme here, don't do it. A decent gaming laptop will

-be more expensive than a desktop with the same performance
-Be non-upgrade-able for all intents and purposes except RAM
-Be loud in classes
-Be heavy and bulky and a fucking pain in the ass to haul around campus daily, I don't even like taking mine on short trips.
-Make a standard desktop monitor seem cutting edge with how much better the display is
-Become a de-facto desktop after a while

Do exactly what you mentioned, buy a shitty laptop for work and a decent desktop for gaming.

I'm a sysadmin and I game in my off time.

Any laptop that can run Dark Souls III?

Sager N8657-S with G-SYNC monitor. Only 1,479.

>fell for the gaymen laptop meme
>loud in classes
>haul around campus

you don't get a gaming laptop to use as a laptop, dipshit. you get a gaming laptop to take to your girlfriend's/friends' places.

you deserve the embarrassment you bestowed upon yourself

HP Omen with i7 4710HQ, 8GB and 2GB 860M here. Steady 60 on all of those at medium 1080p, about 40 on high. Dead Rising 3 hates my shit, though. Drops to 15-20 in super heavy crowds. Battery while gaming, with power saving options on, is about 2 hours. Everyday life shit, 4-6.

HP Omen here, about 50 steady on high 1080p, 35 ultra. When playing on battery, I go to med 720p, 2 hours or so of life and buttery 60.

Isn't 860m a housefire card or can I save some cash by getting one of those over a 9xx series?

You can do schoolwork on a fucking $200 chromebook

Just get a PS4 or some shit you fucking casual

A bit hot under the collar, but not house fire. Just get something with decent cooling. Look at the Omen. That thin fucker has two wimpy fans and a metal body, but it stays cool unless you block the intakes.

>Implying $80 chink atom tab and Bluetooth keyboard combo is not budget king
I bet you don't even shop at thrift stores.

>gaming laptop
>for university
Enjoy the 20 minutes battery

>chink tablet
At least get a proper one with a nonshit battery.

Android sucks at word formatting though.

Alright I'm going to bid on one. If I can't play all those games on medium 1080p 60 fps imma hunt you down.

>Atom
>Assuming it's Android
lrn2architecture, fag.

Come at me bro
L4D2
Dark Souls 1-3
DOOM
I'll be waiting

By the way, they're cheap as fuck on Amazon right now.

>implying it's running windows

Oh the horror

Win10/Droid dual boot on some, straight Win10, Win8 on some higher end/older ones. Don't get a dual boot, the space is too limited and getting rid of Android is a bitch.
