Why do people use this crap?

I don't mean this against ublock specifically, but if people use Linux (or even Winshit) why bother with a fucking adblocker in the browser instead of just using a hosts file that filters the shit out?

It just werks

Because of cosmetic filters. Nobody likes an empty box filling space on your screen.

I use both.

ublock is more than a adblocker, it blocks unwanted elements as well

it also remove anti-adblock blockers.

Can be easily turned off if it breaks a website, and you can also block other unwanted elements. It's not like you can actually notice any performance difference anyway.

All ad blocks suck,I even use the monkey script and it does not help me here

>instead of just using a hosts file that filters the shit out
Because I don't like 404 windows in the middle of my pages.

I use both MVPS hosts and uBlockOrigin

An adblocker can use wildcards and regular expressions:

||facebook.*

instead of having to grab the address manually.

>browsing Sup Forums in private mode
Hello newfag

Fuck off

Sure OP is a fat US poster.

win 2002 help and hosts are old shit.

Sure you can block something but TODAY GOOGLE KIKEBOOK JEWCROSOFT have so many servers that yout host will choke.

>Femanon
Go attention whoring somewhere else
>>>/tumblr/

Hosts can make the whole system unresponsive if the filesize gets too big

>not browsing in private mode everything

>win 2002 help and hosts are old shit.
They ease the job of the ad blocker extension I think. Overall less resource usage coming from your browser. Using both seems like the way to go imo.

Retard

Never had this issue

Hardware is fast enough to do it in-browser.

Host files are so huge they can freeze machines for up to an hour.

Host file isn't easy to use or convenient, being able to tweak it and does not offer custom element hiding.

I like having history

>windows problems

cosmetic filtering essentially.

pihole >

>Fuck off
>Retard

So you're not even denying it

There's a script like adaway that merge host lists for more website than only mpvs?
However if you are using a proxy host list is useless

You mean there's a mistake in this post besides pure stupidity and 'hurr i just should attack on people for no reason'? Kill yourself then

That's why bookmarks were invented.

Whatever you say, "Femanon".

Have you heard of this site called "tumblr"? I think it would suit you better.

Fuck off you fucking autist

because it's easier you mong. how can you not understand this? installing a browser extension literally takes a few seconds

see

so you bookmark every single page you ever opened?

Ah, now I see. My bad, please continue

Running this script probably takes less effort

#!/bin/bash
cd /tmp

wget raw.githubusercontent.com/StevenBlack/hosts/master/hosts
rm /etc/hosts
mv hosts /etc/hosts
cat ~/.etchosts >> /etc/hosts

I think I fit very well here, thank you, may be you should go there and complain about people notusing a browser the way you think it should be used.

>Blocking ads to starve content creators of their deserved revenue
You fucking freetard faggots have no shame, I swear.

Commie scum.

I would actually give you a proper response if your name wasn't Femanon

Pathetic

>I think I fit very well here
You and that autist you're arguing with should probably commit sudoku and fuck off, faggots

Not that guy(s) but I use a 16000 line host file and uBO on a ten year old machine with no problems whatsoever. Adblocker alone doesn't protect outside of your browser, for, let's say a messenger client, or any other application, for that matter. Host file locks your shit down system wide. Can uBlock prevent Windows from phoning home?
>then again, neither will a host file, unfort.

No, just the ones I want to open again.

>raw.githubusercontent.com/StevenBlack/hosts/master/hosts
>assingning to 0.0.0.0 instead of 127.0.1

Is this safe?

Didn't expect a propper answer anyway, you're too much of an idiot to come up with one. Take this by their hands and write a blogpost about how people constantly anger you for not using a browser the way you think it should be used.

Can't sync a hosts file between systems. Also, it just werks.

>implying I'm angry

>best adblocker made by B A S E D gorhill
>crap
b2reddit

My screenshoit must have upset you since you came up with this pathetic remark, moron

>comparing bookmarks with history

>using history as bookmarks

Why do people like you think they are allowed to open threads?
Blocking with a host file is extremely inefficient. The host file works best if kept short. Resorting to a host file has to be an extrema ratio (e.g. malicious sites). It can't be reasonably used to block ads.
>github.com/gorhill/uBlock/wiki/Counterarguments#just-use-a-hosts-file
A gargantuan host file could also slow down the DNS lookup.

The only alternative to an addon would be a proxy-based ad-blocking (e.g. wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/privoxy#Ad_Blocking_with_Privoxy )
It could be efficient for handling multiple clients and multiple browsers in a LAN, still it won't and can't handle cosmetic filters gracefully as uBlock Origin does.

>falling for this meme
This hasn't been a problem since 2002 on real shitty hardware/connection.

>can't into adblock on a mobile device
Starting to feel like summer outside and in.

Yeah, it's fine.

Yes you can you moron

Shut the fuck up now and stop shitting up my thread you fucking bitch, or I swear I'll come to where you are and rape the fucking life out of you

That link just contradicted your point you fuckwit. He uses a hosts file himself.

>don't use host file, just use uBlock
>github.com/gorhill/uBlock/wiki/Counterarguments#just-use-a-hosts-file
>uBlock supports the parsing/enforcing of hosts files, and ships with a couple of them. One of them, "Peter Lowe’s Ad server list" is enabled out of the box.
>uBlock uses host files
kek
>Using a hosts file at OS level rather than uBlock level is definitely the better solution for lists of malware domain, since these malware-linked domains would be blocked system-wide at OS level, and all applications would benefit from it.

host file + uBlock masterase

>AdAway on mobile is exactly like adding entries to a host file on a laptop or desktop
Yes, sure is summer in here.

>pineight.com/mw/?title=Hosts#Efficient_resolver
>By May 2013, one popular hosts file manager was generating hosts files with over two million entries. This slows the performance of name resolution in popular desktop operating systems whose resolver rescans the hosts file linearly for every DNS resolution. This shouldn't be too hard to fix at the operating system level: scan it once and build a Bloom filter, a data structure that acts as a lossy compression of a set. The so-called "safe browsing" filter in Google Chrome uses the same data structure

If you're unable to read and comprehend both what I wrote and what is written down there, you can't be helped.

as usual you never dissapoint OP. Somehow you always manage to make even more retarded threads with borderline crazy stupid topics.
Thank you for going to such lenghts doing shit only an ignorant nigger faggot could come up with for our general amusing.

Why do you have two adblockers? Get rid off that white power shit, there's no reason to use anything other than uBlock Origin.

>requiring root to block ads
>ISHYGDDT

what argument was being made, you fucking autist

>newfag
>femanon attention whore

these are not arguments, they do not need to be refuted

Works for me. You need to use Greasemonkey with Anti-Adblock Killer | Reek and the matching list in uBlock Origin.

>pineight.com/mw/?title=Hosts#Efficient_resolver
>2013
>one popular hosts file manager
>over two million entries
>theoretical drawbacks

It even goes on to say
>devices running a mobile operating system such as iOS or Android typically don't give the device's owner enough administrative privileges to edit the hosts file.
Anyone with a rooted Android device or jailbroken iPhone and an edited host file can surely tell you there is absolutely no noticebale difference in performance. And we're talking much smaller processors and wifi connections. I myself have 8 host file lists enabled on my device. OpenNIC DNS everywhere, btw.

Interesting note though:
>Windows 8 and later remove certain entries from the hosts file

>using a hosts file that redirects and wastes resources rather than a dedicated addon that actively blocks things
Holy shit, please stop abusing computer features for something they were never designed to do.

As of late the ublock anti-adblock blocker isn't working. Is there a setting for it? I never really tinkered around with it but some website anti-adblockers sometimes do show up

Because rule based blocking is superior to domain based blocking.

With uBlock you can block down to scripts containing certain functions as well as elements.

host based blocking is rudimentary in comparison.

>he doesnt launch his browser in private mode by default
Get a load of this newfag.

Because lots of websites refuse access to people who block ads, and it's much simpler and quicker to disable ublock for that website than it is to rmeove your adblocking host so you can view the site, and then replace it once you're done.

>lots of websites
>literally only a handful worth noting
and even those aren't worth subjecting yourself to malware over

>it's much simpler and quicker to disable ublock for that website than it is to rmeove your adblocking host so you can view the site
Why are you giving in?
If you're going to block ads then why disable the blocking because a site asks you to? That only encourages more sites to implement these scripts.

Not to mention that some of the scripts (like antiadblock.com) are literally malware and the obfuscated code can be easily modified to connect to dangerous domains without the user being aware.

Don't disable your adblockers. It just isn't worth it. Often you can still view content on a page by just blocking the first party scripts.

did you install the reek's. anti-anti-adblocker script with the filters?

github.com/reek/anti-adblock-killer

>Because of cosmetic filters. Nobody likes an empty box filling space on your screen.

This

reek doesn't always work tho

FPBP

>not posting the superior image

Hosts file is not meant for adblock, i.e. you're doing it wrong.

Literally all they have to do is use IPs instead of hostnames and your host file is completely useless.

REAL ad block can also do content analysis, pattern filters, etc.

Bonus: if you set up your own Privoxy server, not only can you use it as a web proxy, but you also get your ad block profile shared across all devices automatically
