Most large companies prefer to put their code under GPL to force people who work on the code to give code back to the large company. See Oracle, Google, etc.
GPL simply takes away freedoms, and people say that's good when a single man uses GPL, but when a big company uses the GPL, it really hurts.

I like how AMD tries to cooperate with libre drivers and firmware for their AMD and acquired ATI cards. Nvidia just gives a big fuck you and won't release the driver's/firmware or release it obfuscated and support limited drivers.
