/sqt/ - Stupid Question Thread

Ask your shitty questions you're too fucking lazy to Google here. Google it first if you're not a piece of shit but I know you are so just fucking kill yourself already. If you don't get a reply don't bump, nobody really gives a shit if you get an answer or not and if you bump we'll ignore it for sure.
Old thread or whatever I'm supposed to call it.

If I have a case fan position right next to my GPU do I want to blow air onto it, suck air off of it, or leave it alone?

How to OCR anime on Gnu/Linux?

First time PC builder here. Is this good?

You have an overclocking CPU, but a non overclockable motherboard. And you also have 32 gigs of ram but only a 970? I think your budget allocation is a bit weird. Ditch the 32. Go for 16 Gigs and spend the extra on a nicer PSU or GPU. Or use it for a Z170 motherboard.

He the bit the bait m8

Is this a good gaming mobo? I'm complete garbage when it comes to motherboards, so I have no idea one way or another. I'd be pairing it with an i3-6100 and a 280 3GB, and eventually replacing the 280 with a 1070

I literally modified the stock "enthusiast gaming build" and swapped out the case and graphics card which I thought were needlessly expensive for what I wanted. The CPU was chosen based on the price drop feature on the site.

pcpartpicker.com/guide/jVZxFT/enthusiast-gaming-build

And what do you mean an "overclocking CPU"? I don't intend on doing any overclocking.

your going to put on os on a 3tb 5400rpm drive?

Reposting from last one as nobody replied.

Got some problems and questions related to them. Have I utterly lost in silicon lottery, is there something else going on and how can I troubleshoot this further?

I've had i7 4770k @ 4.3 GHz stable for around a year. No crashes which I could relate to the clocks and I could run benchmarks just fine. However to achieve that clock and run the system stable, it meant that I had to use 1.35V core voltage which is VERY high for Haswell and borderline hot under load even with my H110 closed loop liquid cooler. I accepted it as what it was even if the result I got was basically the worst 4770k I ever saw.

Recently I started experiencing crashes from occasional ones in games to ones during desktop use. USB devices would shut on/off regularly, CPU fan 2 won't work unless I plug it into one of the system fan headers etc. I tried running Prime95 and it crashed during the first minute. I go to BIOS, lower clock speed by 0.1 GHz and try again: crashes immediately. I lower clock speed again: system fails booting. After some retries it boots but it refuses to run a benchmark stable. I lower clocks to 4.0 GHz and voltage to 1.25V: it stalls in BIOS while saving and after it finally boots it still fails at running Prime on any of the benchmark types for more than a second. I never had any problems using clocks this low - just 0.3 GHz shy from the max turbo freq of the defaults.

Any idea what is going on? My CPU might be the worst Haswell ever produced but this kind of stuff makes me wonder if it's just the CPU causing problems or something else? I just loaded BIOS defaults and running Prime stable for an hour. Other specs:

Intel i7 4770k, now at stock clock speeds
Gigabyte Windforce GTX 780
2*Corsair Vengeance 8 GB 1600MHz DDR3
Gigabyte GA-Z87X-UD5 with newest BIOS available
Samsung 840 256 GB SSD with newest firmware available
Corsair AX760 PSU
Win 10 Pro 64 bit

So how to narrow the problem down? What programs to use?

I swapped out the hard drive as well since I like western digital products.

OK, put the original back. It was a7200 RPM 3TB Hitachi drive.

Hitachi Ultrastar 7K3000

C++ question: can static member functions be called if the class they're attached to is pure virtual?

Are factory overclocked GPUs worth the extra cost? Is it essentially pointless if you can overclock them yourself, or is there some kind of benefit I'm not aware of?

It's safer if you have no idea what you're doing and refuse to Google things. That's about it

Factory overclocked GPUs often come with better cooling systems and greater maximum power draw, allowing better overclocks.

If it's just clock speed then no, it's just for people without overclocking mobos.

is the pirate bay dead for good

No.

It's just shit. Always has been.

I have a 2500k that won't oc for shit and hasn't since 2012. It happens

So say the MSI X/Z and EVGA classified cards would have better cooling or more power phases, something like that?

why is it shit?

Typically, yes.

Pic related, EVGA GTX 980Ti Superclocked and Kingpin. Notice the difference in pins. Kingpin can pull in a lot more juice so you can clock it retarded high, to the point where it's beating the 1080 with a good cooling system.

I was searching ebay for a replacement display for my T410, the listing says the part is for a dell, though. Will it work (the connector looked ok and the model number matches) or do I need to find one elsewhere?

Just got an aio I've got a 860k figure I should at least put a modest overclock on it can anyone guide me through it

I'm looking into an external poweramp for my audio setup and I'm wondering if an amplifiers 'headroom' is somehow related to Dynamic Range? trying to gauge what kind of power I might want.

Oh neat. I've got an EVGA Supernova G2 750w, running only a single GPU and 6600K @1.35vcore/4.5Ghz with a few drives. I could plug in another GPU cable with a card like this and get some pretty good OC going?

I've always been a bit leery of GPUs and heat because I typically use mine until they degrade or die without even overclocking. I've had bad luck maybe.

Thanks for the info though.

put the os on a ssd and use the drive for storage

(me)
might this be considered a 10dB peak?

Not a big fan of SSDs. I don't like how fast they degrade with many read-write cycles.

Or you could stop living in the past

They don't degrade from reading, only writing. Put caches/downloads on a hard disk and they'll be fine. SSDs these days can write petabytes without failing anyway.

Or you could stop chasing after memes

What's a good, cheap ac standard router which has enough storage and support for open source firmware like dd-wrt and open-wrt?

You only think it's a meme because you're willfully ignorant or dreadfully illiterate.

GTX 970 or R9 390?

I have a .tex typed up, and texlive installed. What do I do to get a pdf?

Is it better to buy a PC or a 3D printer?

Headroom would basically mean how much louder the amplifier can drive your loudspeakers above whatever the loudest tolerable listening volume you have without clipping or pushing the loudspeakers into compression and high levels of distortion. Dynamic range is the noise performance of the system, think it as the difference between the lowest level signal which can be measure above the noise floor and the maximum output level. This dynamic range is unrelated to the dynamic range of the audio content which is much harder to define but think of that as the amplitude variance as a function of time in the audio. Here the amplifier power does factor in.

Power requirements tend to be vastly exaggerated in audiophile circles so take those as a grain of salt. Those general guidelines by Crown seem sane enough. Check your loudspeaker's sensitivity, know how loud you want them to be at most and then add the extra dBs there based on the musical genre as a headroom too accommodate for the louder peaks in the signal. Add some more if you are going to use an equalizer. Chances are that you can be fine with 50w a channel in almost any home listening situation but check the loudspeaker sensitivity first.

never mind, found pdftex

Depends if you're into apples or oranges.

pdflatex, as you found in if you're using citations (e.g. through bibtex) then you'll need to do it a few times, like
pdflatex paper.tex
bibtex paper
pdflatex paper.tex
pdflatex paper.tex

or something

Is the case in pic related any good?

I find it hard to believe you can get a decent one for $20.

It's usually never good to buy a 3D printer if you're not using it very frequently or don't need it here and now for rapid prototyping. You can have stuff printed much better by services like Shapeways. Do the math and determine whether owning one and breathing the fumes would be cheaper.

What if I want to print shit that the typical SJW maker would be likely to report me to the police for?

>not because it's illegal
>because he's ignorant of the law and the item hurts his fee fees.

Example? 3D printing is not the best method for every kind of shape.

>Because music has transient peaks that are 6 to 25 dB above the average level, the power amplifier needs to produce enough power to handle those peaks without distortion.

I wanted a way to identify those peaks, I had a house curve in mind when I wanted to crank it.

airsoft gun parts

People pay retarded amounts of money for them.

AMD vs Nvidia cards? Why get AMD if developers regularly sabotage their games for it?
Is the 480 going to be better than the 970?
How much bleach do I have to drink for it to be lethal?

A few small ones.

1.) I want to do a clean Windows 7 Install, but have games/pictures/other shit i'd like to carry over, what's the easiest way to go about this?

2.) When installing Win7 I would like to dual boot OSX (Music producing shit, just makes it more convenient). So how would I be able to assess files universally, regardless of which OS I booted into?

>AMD vs Nvidia cards?
No.
>Why get AMD if developers regularly sabotage their games for it?
MUH. GAYMES.
>Is the 480 going to be better than the 970?
Significantly.
>How much bleach do I have to drink for it to be lethal?
Depends on your body. Drink all you have to be sure.

Hey, could someone explain me what a Systems engineer is?

Buy an external drive, stick everything you want to save and access onto it. Make sure it uses a FAT32 file system. Done.
I'm not trying to start fires, I'm actually curious. Every thread always devolves into shit slinging and I want to make sure my $200-350 isn't wasted.

GTX 970 or R9 390?

I've heard the R9 is more "future proof" since it has more RAM.

I bought a lg g2 at&t model from ebay and can't get data service here in Australia ("no apn's" message comes up in settings)

call and text work fine though. Anyone know how to fix?

Trying to manage my own files, parsing the text w/ Python 3, I get this,

UnicodeEncodeError: 'charmap' codec can't encode character 'u2019' in position 15: character maps

The single obstruction to me learning to handle my files! Someone explain this in terms a monkey can comprehend - and how to overcome it!

3D printing would not be appropriate for that. Your parts wouldn't have the same kind of structural integrity. Learn to use lathes and drills and such if you want to do it right.

Neither.

If you want something future proof get the RX 480. If you want something cheaper get the RX 480. If you want something with better performance than both combined get the RX 480.

airshit kiddies don't know or care.

after all their parents are paying for it.

You do have a point.

If they don't care about branding, wouldn't they sooner buy Chinese shit than your garbage?

>55021543
Add this line at the beggining of your .py file

# -*- coding: utf-8 -*-

Because I can make them things that the chinks won't.

Chinks work with hundred thousand part production runs. Airshitters want to look like special snowflakes, and 3D printed parts allow them to do so.

Not to mention replacement parts for shit that has been out of production or shit the chinks won't offer replacement parts for (since they'd rather jew you into replacing the whole gun).

>be teen in 00s
>dropship plastic assault rifles on ebay
>mfw

A high resolution waveform of the audio content. Something like Audacity might even have tools to quickly analyze the difference between average volume and loudest peaks.

Do you know how to 3D model tho? Shit's as challenging as learning a programming language. But pays less because art majors.

Of course.

>branding
>literally self-promoting dickwaving
>having anything to do with structural integrity

Wow with this lack of business acumen or even common sense I'm not surprised that Sup Forums is a bunch of fat neckbearded neets.

Good on you 3d printerfag for taking the initiative, something these overgrown manchildren will never comprehend.

Then owning a printer may be worthwhile. If you're near a Micro Center, they have a bunch you can look at and examples of print jobs. Are airsoft kids more or less likely to buy something from a Shapeways page?

I would think so. There's already some airsoft parts on shapeways.

bump.

Is there an actually usable to Google that respects the user's privacy? Every other search engine I've used can't even find Sup Forums even pointing at it directly.

how do I install this on debian? packages.debian.org/sid/pocketsphinx

I've tried apt-get install pocketsphinx
but got Unable to late package pocketsphinx in return.

What is a good alternative to Amaze and RAR?

getting mixed information on RAM and the effect of it's speed.
some youtube videos say OC'd ram gives a noticable performance boost but other sources (including logicalincrements.com) say it doesn't really matter.
what gives?

duckduckgo.com

What was the name of that shell command that takes the output of a process and writes it to a file, and if the file gets too big, it starts writing it to another file?

I'm pretty sure all you needed to do was prepend your command with the shell command. And I'm pretty sure it started with f. So it was like 'f xxx xxx xxx ....'

Once your RAM is working at 1600MHz it is fast enough to load anything instantaneously, making it faster wont matter.

Dude its 4GB/s random read speeds. And faster sequential, anything will load at once.

The only way you would notice a performance boost out it is if you use a IGPU since their performance is also based on RAM speed.

It wasn't logrotate.

I remember when people used to stick pennies on their RAM xD

what's a good mobile app for browsing Sup Forums?

clover seems to be dead and the captcha system is fucked on it

What vegan food should I prepare when my bf returns from big boy camp?

Clover its not dead, im using it right now.

Install the github/Fdroid version.

bump.

Depends on what you're using it for
Going faster than DDR3 1600 or DDR4 2400 gives no better performance for gaming.

vegan tendies

so I have a laptop with a legal w10 on it and want to change the regular hdd for an ssd. I'll lose w10, right? there is no way to move the license over? fucking shit.

does it have auto updates?

It definitely can be moved. Maybe not by you or you mom. I could. The license is tied to the motherboard. If you've never experienced catastrophic data loss, you probably will at least once before you learn how not to.

If I reencode h.264 to h.265 I will lose quality, would downloading an .iso and encoding from that minimize this?

hey retard poster pajeet, you replied to the wrong post. kys my man.

oops
thank you for notice
meant for

you can just reinstall windows 10 from microsoft's website.
Windows 10 will remember your hardware configuration so you shouldn't even need to enter a licence code after you install.

Is that red light bad?

I assume it's a power indicator. Check the manual.

is 600w psu enough for a gtx 1080?

Keep talking and nobody explodes.

That means is a girl.
Congratulations user

Yes, but you have to power more than just a GTX 1080 if you want a functional PC.

Is it enough for rest of computer too?

Seeing as:

-Windows 10 is giving me a handful of issues
-Dual booting is inconvenient and I end up using Windows anyways

Is it worth permanently using intel graphics 4600 HD on linux and try to use Windows on a virtual machine with GPU passthrough, or should I just install Windows 7/8.1 again and give up on linux distros?

I believe it is. According to pissmark, it has a max TDP of 180 W. Very efficient. But only sessile losers buy the latest GPU.
