I don't know shit about computer part compatability please teach me.

Mostly I don't know how to tell if a mobo, cpu, and gpu are able to work together.

In pic what my current computer already has, it was pre-built

You just match CPU socket number with MOBO socket number i.e. i5-4690k which is LGA1550 fits into any MOBO with LGA1550 socket.
For AMD - they do not change their sockets that much and some are compatible with older version like AM3 and AM3+ but someone else with more knowledge about AMD would help you more.

So what about gpu?

We currently have PCIe standart so you can not mismatch this although we currently use 3rd gen of PCIe but it is compatible with 2nd and 1st gen (the only difference is speed). Your best choice is to put GPU into x16 PCIe but difference between x16 x8 and x4 is negligible.

So there's different sized PCIe slots?

the sockets are sized the same

So what does the x16, x8, and x4 mean?

Yes, most of current day MOBO in standard ATX format will come with at least one x16 (mostly 3rd generation) and some x4. Also there can be some PCI for if you have older cards (not GPU) to put in.

Lets look at pic related, it is MSI Z97 GAMING 5 motherboard in ATX format. It comes with LGA1550 socket and 3x PCIe x16 and 4x PCIe x4 slots. You plug your GPU into x16 although it is possible to plug it into x4 too

speccy thread?

So much data

So other than cpu/compatability, what else do I need to know in order to pick the right mobo for me?

First of all... if your gonna buy a new mobo you have 2 choices... intel or amd

socket 1151 or 1150 for intel are the only ones worth going for at the moment (IMO)

That's gonna set you back a lot of money either way, your best just sticking with the machine you got and upgrading your components first FX-8350 are good cpu's and are pretty cheap, the first thing I would look at getting in your position is a SSD

Pic related, my specs

I'm wanting to upgrade my current system but I don't know what to look for or how to chose. Want to upgrade my cpu and gpu and the by extension I'll prolly have to upgrade power supply. Really want the new 1070 and any cpu that's will last and is worth the money for best performance

Dunno how to tell if I can get the components I want and actually be able to use them

What is your budget and what will be primary and secondary use of your PC?

Logicalincrements for build ideas. PCpartpicker to get a rough idea of how much it'll actually cost.

Well I have another computer similar to yours AMD, nothing wrong with it.

You can't really go wrong with a FX-8350 but your board may need a bios update if you've never done one, first thing as I said is get the SSD, this will increase your boot times dramatically, you shouldn't need a new power supply for those 2 parts... graphics cards are hungry and you will need a PSU rated at least 500 watts before going further

Your graphics card currently is a piece of crap desu, it won't use much power at all though hell the onboard graphics on your motherboard are probably just as good lol, if you have a 500 watt power supply already you could probably get away with putting a decent card in.

Budget is about 400 or so maybe more depending on what will give me the best performance for my money. Primary is for games, I want to run things like adr1ft and battlefield on at least medium settings but high is preferred. Secondary is just regular Internet shit like YouTube and shit

I'm tryna figure out what gpu to buy lol. Need to know what I can put on the mobo. I know my current gpu is a disgusting heap of shit. When I bought the computer two and half years ago I didn't know jack shit about computer parts and I way overpaid for it.never bought a computer on my own before, I didn't know

How do I do a bios update? I don't think I've ever done that

msi.com/Motherboard/support/760GM-P34-FX.html#down-bios

Here is a link to your motherboard bios page, you want the latest one

What you do is extract the file to a USB and boot up to your bios by pressing DEL... then go to the flash tool and select the bios file from usb and it will start the upgrade

Good power supplies go for cheap, I just ordered a 500W for $20

Any of the graphics cards on this page will suit you just fine and are well within your budget

Thank you so much

lanes.

a modern gpu always has 16 lanes and it's the longest slot which mostly looks like

>i did all the work for you

no you are a cuck

Actually forget that Processor and go with This

Because I looked at the CPU support list and the 8350 is not on there and this is

But apparently the Fx-4300 your running on there isn't either so wtf

No I just like technology and helping people learn it's nice when people are helpful you however are an ass, I hope when you ask for help on a topic you don't know much about people tell you to fuck off

the 8300 is actually a bit newer than the 8350 so both should work but the 8300 is a wiser choice because it has decreased tdp and volt by potentially better binning to overclock

it's not about helping people, it's about wasting your time and increasing the newfag factor on this board

i mean, when summer hits, if it turns out that we are so happy helpful people around the globe.

40% of threads will be like

>muh gaming rig can't game. where's mario?

not really...

If I felt like I was wasting my time, I wouldn't be here.

Not sure why you want to scare everyone away for, but whatever not like this board doesn't have enough shitposters like yourself
