Recommended models: T420 - 14", normal size X220 - 12.5", ultraportable ---- Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops) >Used machines are plentiful and cheap. >Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet. >Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels. >Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models. >Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop. >Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain. >The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad. >Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support. ---- Used ThinkPad Buyers Guide: ktgee.net/tpg
Just picked up a T60, what's a good OS for it? Trying out Mint right now, but not really feeling it.

Hi T60 user. I'm using lubuntu right now with the HDD that came with my T60 and it boots up really fast. The WM is very responsive and quick because LXDE uses a lot from OpenBox.

Best 14" for under $900 CAD? (700 USD) Looking for one for university.

Been using trisquel mini on mine, runs very well
Elijah Fisher
>tfw no thinkpad using gf
Liam Wright
Honestly you don't need a good laptop "for university." All you're going to use it for is taking notes, writing papers, browsing the web. If you need to use intensive software or want to game you should build a desktop.
Leo Stewart
Thinkpad...replacement power supply was a bitch to find. Still great value, im good with it.
Christopher Anderson
how the fuck are you supposed to remove these obnoxious stickers jesus christ
Leo Torres
Should I tone it down from a t460 to a t450? or are you thinking even lower?
John Taylor
I'm using a T60 and going to college carrying that around. You can think way lower... People overestimate how much power they need for something so simple. What are you taking? If you're doing anything like architecture, EE, or math you will will have a computer lab capable of running MatLAB and CAD software.
Aaron Nelson
Well it's up to you. I used a t61 for uni for years and recently "upgraded" to a t420. It's always been more than sufficient for anything I would want to do on a laptop.
Caleb Carter
how much should I be paying for a used t420s with an i7 and nvidia graphics?
Angel Flores
which stickers fag? they all come off pretty easy in my experience
just use goo gone or rubbing alcohol for residue
Owen Green
200-350 dollars. depending on the condition of the laptop.
Chase Martin
AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH
Angel Richardson
The 60 series doesn't have a true "all day" battery life the way at least a Sandy Bridge model would
Bentley Allen
They should just fall off over time from jizz build-up. Nah, you use rubbing alcohol
Ian Allen
Yeah, isopropyl alcohol is the solution here. I wish it was this easy to remove stickers from books.
Owen Ramirez
Currently rocking an X301, but I'm thinking of upgrading because it's shit.
Should I do a T420 or T430? I'm cautious about the change in keyboard on the T430, but at least it has dedicated trackpoint buttons
Jackson Scott
how much should I be paying for a x220 with i5, 8gb, 320gb hdd, and ips screen?
Leo Foster
Is that still for sale? I saw that on eBay almost a month ago.
Samuel Fisher
What is an incredibly easy to use, battery efficient and lightweight linux OS that could facilitate heavy web browsing and watching HD movies? (Currently using Windows 7 on a W520)
Aiden Roberts
Any of them
Luke Reyes
what class lasts longer than 2 hours? just charge it in the hallway while you're waiting for the next class. or charge it in the classroom.

Ubuntu? Is there any other options? Keep in mind I know nothing about Linux.

just got my t420i from ebay in the mail, was pleasantly surprised to find a 120gb ssd in it

Hey /tpg/,
Just got my x220 yesterday, and set it up. Any recommended upgrades? I was thinking about getting a USB 3.0 Expresscard to fill in the Expresscard slot.
Noah Johnson
Anyone try out the new thinkpad? Thoughts?
Jason Robinson
Disable virtualization and the webcam from BIOS and you're good I hear the express card slots suck down battery life, the ones for usb3.
Joseph Phillips
Just got my x220, and installed Arch+XFCE. It's a meme OS, but it uses ~300 MB of RAM and I get around 6 hours of battery life.
Angel Walker
>Disable virtualization What if I need this shit?
Julian Jones
I think it's easier to just put a piece of electrical tape over it personally.
Kayden Edwards
Currently using w520 with arch linux. Why does my brightness up hotkey register twice while brightness down works normally.. anyone lese have this problem?
Aiden Evans
So, im panning to get a thinkpad but my budget is somewhat limited if we leave aside other things.
How much a new battery (not chinese) should cost and how i know its the real deal? im looking for great battery life but most sellers over here advertise batteries that last 2.5 hours or less.
If the thinkpad i buy uses 2.5" 9mm what i have to do to fit a 7mm SSD on it? nothing? Im planning to put a cheap ADATA SSD on it or a 850 EVO if everything goes right.
Is it worth it to spend $150 more on a T420/X220 instead a T400/X200 if all im going to do is Netbeans and MSOffice?
Isaac Edwards
I use the 450s and it's perfect for me with the 9 cell that's detachable. The 460s can't do that any more.
Don't get anything older than 450s though. The 440s has no buttons at the touchpad and the older ones make you look autistic.
Jordan Russell
are you using the 6 cell or 9 cell battery?
Mason Bailey
If you go to a school that was built before electrification was widespread, good luck finding an outlet in the classroom you can use, or in the hallway for that matter.
Asher Powell
Lubuntu would probably suit it better.
Ubuntu has all the bells and whistles and isn't well suited for older machines if you're using the default desktop (which, if you know nothing about Linux, you will be). Lubuntu uses a lightweight desktop and is tuned for older hardware.
Should I buy a T400 or X200? Both being listed for $100.
Connor Gonzalez
>tfw no 1080p X220/X230
Lincoln Cook
>tfw ordered a t420, 4gb extra ram, an ssd, replacement keyboard, extra battery and they are all supposed to get here next week
Camden Morales
does the T60 support any of the T7xxx CPUs, or are there some with motherboard configurations that only support 32 bit? i'm asking because mine has the T2300 cpu, and while i'm sure an upgrade is worth it, i'm worried if the motherboard is even compatible with a more powerful cpu like the T7400 which i plan to purchase
Colton Jackson
cmon, please help a brother out
we in this together
Colton Ramirez
will this ever be possible

>X250 stops wanting to boot >no power, not even a charging light >opened it up, nothing obvious causing a short Any ideas?
Nolan Wilson
I'm using the 6 cell. In fact, I think I have a 3rd party battery. I bought the thing refurbished.
Austin Fisher
No that's my mummy
Wyatt Bailey
Turn off computer, press power button ten times rapidly, then hold it down for 30 seconds. If Odin accepts your offering the computer will boot.
Juan Ward
It won't power on to begin with, and I don't even get a charging light when I plug it in to the adapter. I tried that truck already, and nothing.
Robert Wood
Replace hard drive, try again. Replace RAM, try again. If neither of those things works it's probably the motherboard.
Samuel Gonzalez
I'm thinking it could be the cable to the power button. For some reason, on the X250 Lenovo decided to daisy-chain the power button cable from the webcam cable. Coincidentally, this means the X250 is unable to boot without the webcam being functional. I just don't want to drop the money into repairing this thing, because this isn't even the first time I've had problems with it. I'm almost to the point of just giving up, selling it for parts and buying something else.
Henry Cooper
freshly installed win 10 on my t420 anyone know what drivers I need for these two?
Aiden Cooper
I've got a T410 and it's been perfect until now. I'm having this weird problem when scrolling with the touchpad edges: it jumps about. As in, I go to scroll down a webpage and it jumps up before it starts scrolling down, it's maddening.
It only seems to happen after I've clicked with one of the mouse buttons above the touchpad, and doesn't happen if I use the ones below it (?!) or click by tapping the touchpad.
I'm pretty sure it's not a software problem, now, because I've tried multiple browsers / etc, but I suppose it still might be? I'm running Xubuntu but it happens in whatever distro I boot up live.
Don't know what to do here, I've searched online and can't find anyone with the same problem. I suppose I could just stop using the upper buttons, but it's annoying me nonetheless. Any suggestions?
Cooper Lopez
why would you want a 12" 1080p screen? >too small to use unscaled >all but one OS sucks at scaling >that one OS doesn't run on thinkpads >that one OS is only god for 4:1 scaling anways you'd want at minimum at 1440p screen, or ideally a 1800p screen

Sometimes when I'm using my memepad I get a huge erection because the keyboard is so good and then it falls off my lap and onto the hardwood floor but it's built so well it doesn't even hurt it but I still feel bad so I stand in the shower and choke myself until I nearly pass out does anyone else do this?
Adrian Cox
which of the newer thinkpads recommended?
>inb4 none

I love fresh memes
Kevin Williams
After lurking for months, i finally gave in to the meme laptop. It feels amazing..just came in the mail along with 8gb ram. Still waiting on my IPS & SSD..
What's a good distro? I've heard Xubuntu works well and helps with battery life as it doesn't use too much RAM. Is dealing with a Hackintosh worth it?
Henry Williams
I'm on Xubuntu right now and loving it. As for Hackintosh I would say no, but I'm biased. Sometimes I think it'd be an interesting little project, but I know I'd uninstall it ten minutes after finishing.
Parker Anderson
save it :s I get 5 hours from mine, just be smart with your brightness and thermal management. 200usd or less Lubuntu get an OEM batter, nothing else substitutes. cost depends on model. you have to make sure it lines up with the mounting screws
Asher Gutierrez
Does anyone know how long the chink 9-cell batterys for the X220 last? I am looking to run Arch Linux on my X220, cheers.
Elijah Morris
Long enough to cause a house fire
Isaac Gutierrez
any proven cases when that shit actually happens?
Jeremiah Martinez
And volume buttons, and has an independent insert key. The new keyboards put insert as fn+end which totally idiotic.
*30 series is pretty much better in every way except, keyboard (subjective) and you cannot use 3rd party batteries
Brandon Parker
How long does a 6-cell genuine battery last on an X220 running Arch Linux + tlp?
James Allen
When I started first year university in 2009, I took my dad's T40p, which was almost six years old at the time. Aside from not being able to play TF2 with my floormates, it performed very well, never skipped a beat. With a new battery it was even decently close to modern laptops in terms of battery life. I imagine a T60 would have similar functionality in today's world (battery life being the one exception). Still didn't stop me from buying a T400 for second year because I needed to watch Chinese cartoons.
I have Ubuntu on a T400 and it just absolutely flies, even without an SSD. A W520 would have enough power to run just about any OS you want.
What SSD are you getting?
Cooper Hall
>what ssd you getting? Tbh i was about to place my order on the Kingston HyperX Fury 250gb but now I'm quite overwhelmed by the options. I'm not sure whether I should go for a more well known brand and get something like SanDisk Extreme Pro or whether it would be better to invest slightly more into a Samsung EVO.
Isaiah Perez
So my x220t just came in, does Sup Forums have a link I could get that will tell me what all lenovo software is actually useful?
Landon Roberts
Kingston is a well known brand. Back in the day, it was them and crucial making hdds.

Can I use aftereffects on t420?
Samuel Myers
It's the t450s
Gabriel Bailey
Yes it can, but 'how well' depends on your hardware.
Joseph Myers
Nice. I like your monitor, too. Nice setup. I am thinking about buying a T460 with the following configuration... >i5 6200u >8GB RAM >128GB SSD >1920 x 1080 IPS 14" >3 cell Li-Ion (23.2Whr) [x2 (front and back)] [8-10 hours of continuous web browsing]
Do you think it will work well docking it to my monitor via HDMI form laptop to VGA/DIV into monitor?
I am picturing to end up with something like your setup but with a 1080p monitor.
