Compared to other possible architectures? Yes.
Tor is still vastly better than direct connections, and it's probably the best low-effort privacy toll currently available.

No really, go read up on malicious exit nodes. If you're not connecting to hidden services you should always assume someone is watching. Doesn't mean they initially know who you are, but they'll see everything you're doing that isn't encrypted end to end.
You're limited to hidden services then. It doesn't help with general privacy.
