What is the most effective steps that someone who is not technologically gifted can easily follow to obtain maximum security against hackers?

What I can think of is,

1. Use Linux or Mac OS. Avoid Windows.
2. Do not install what you do not trust: Common Sense 2016.
3. Do not connect to suspicious networks.
4. ...

Please expound on this list. Keep adding entries you can think of.
I will make the end result of the list into pastebin.
Then we can just give the link to newbies who come here crying asking for tech support.

Let's go.

Yes, the main reason I started using Linux if because I got pwned. When I already was on Linux I got craaazy and downloaded everthing I could because it was retard easy and very safe. Even connecting to other networks was relatevly safe, IF you have hardened your browser.

So I would advice.

1. Get Linux.
2. Get Firefox addons.

1 & 2 are the same thing.
>Don't trust or install malware/windows because common sense, and use osx / install linux because common sense.

Don't use Linux. It has numerous zero day exploits and is extremely unsecure. Only use Mac so you aren't exposed to any malware that you might find on Facebook .

7/10 trolling, OP probably knows of the Mac's ransomware pague.
The zero day expoits are a nice troll, but Facebook malware nigga?

Turn firewall off
Forward all ports on router
And never update (buttnet)

I've seen when people open some link when they receive it from someone and then when you click on the link, it redirects to your profile page and then sends the link to everyone in your friend list.

Those retards give their password to the bot. Disable JS

Yes, but are Macs safe from that? Because is a browser thing.

I believe in security through isolation. Due to the current state of technology you cannot avoid using dangerous closed source software and habits. However It's upto you how seriously you are going to take your security.
Although Privacy and Security are correlated, are completely different priority. Sometimes you actually want your privacy to be breached to a certain extent to be secure from malicious attackers.
Here are my security advices:

Install GNU/Linux. Have MAC or RBAC enabled. Don't log in as a root.
Only install the softwares from your distro's secure repo
Use the Grsec kernel with PaX patches.
Use uBlock origin. HTTPS everywhere, Disconnect and Decentraleyes.
Use a Secure DNS.
Never keep yourself logged into anything.
If you want to compromise your privacy, enable two phase log in, However please do not link your email IDs as "referential IDs". Just make sure one email ID does not trace back to the other one you got.
Use a password manager. Best way is to maintain own encrypted spreadsheet.
Never use flash.
Install and keep firewall enabled at startup.
Keep bluetooth and printer service disabled by default.
Never give your windows VM any network access.
Do not bank or shop online unless you really have to. NEVER INSTALL YOUR BANK'S APP IN YOUR PHONE.
Randomly change all your 16 digit passwords. Use your spreadsheet to keep track of it.
Analyse your data traffic to check for network tapping.
Always keep a mirror backup of your data. Create your own cloud storage if you are really serious.
Lastly, only visit trusted websites

Reminder that there are malwares can exploit your host file system. Bidirectional file and clipboard sharing should be handled with caution.

>Protip:
You cannot "download" or "install" security

>Use linux
>Not technically gifted

>linux is hard meme
Install Lubuntu if you are a whinner.

Thanks tech support, saving the day again

Saved.

>someone who is not technologically gifted
>maximum security against hackers

Teaching them how to use whatever system they currently have.

Installing linux is going to lead to instant botnet since they have no idea what they're doing and any time they need a program they're just going to google and download/install the first thing they find that works. Nothing not even linux will prevent this. And unlike windows most distros don't come with a built in AV scanner.

Mac is no better than Windows. A friend literally got her Mac ransom encrypted right next to me because she clicked an ad by mistake on DeviantArt and downloaded the malware thinking it was a wallpaper.

Thanks Pajeet, 5 rupees have been deposited in your account.

Don't own anything electrical. Live the Amish life - is chill.

I recommend Debian or Mint, not OSX. Use an antivirus program. Don't get lazy with system or application updates. That's all you really need. If you don't know what you're doing, Google it first. Just don't be a stupid nigger and you'll be fine. Also, there's no use in encrypting your computer if your only personal information on it is memes and porn. If the feds ever want in they'll just lock you up until you decrypt your drives. My Mint installation is only encrypted because I use it for work and it's mandatory.

Fuck off back to Sup Forums stupid kid.

Kek

>wut iz gewgle?

>instant botnet
That's what you get when you activate Windows 10. Linux is more secure because nobody fucking uses it. Windows and OSX are so widely used that they're targeted the most by malware.

Security by obscurity is not security at all.

The one simple thing I think most people can and should do is write down all their passwords and important computer info on paper and keep it somewhere close by. Locked drawer or filing cabinet if you've got one.

...

I disagree.
