It werks like a charm with no gapps. But its a dumb idea anyway, 95% of other apps still will not work without gapps. So its better to leave them be and block google via firewall.

Not a shill, but I've done plenty of research, and signal is basically the best you can get while also being easy enough for normies.

Messages are provably end-to-end encrypted (unlike telegram where they sit in clear text on telegram's servers). Play services is used for notifications that a new message is waiting on the signal servers so your battery doesn't get murdered via signal checking for updates all the time. Play services doesn't even get the encrypted messages, it's just a notification for your client to go fetch a new message.

I thought they were working on removing the Google Play Services dependancy but they were using it because otherwise they would either have to use a more battery consuming connection method or setup a distributed set of push servers so that it would be robust enough. Instead they use Google's service as a transport medium.

You used to be able to use the fork Libresignal, which utilized the websocket interface of signals servers so you don't need google play services. They shut it down though!! Fucking assholes. The developers sarcastically suggested solution was using a google services replacement that is still in alpha and insecure as fuck.

But that sends the messages over SMS. Have fun getting targeted after your local cops stingray sees your encrypted messages

Exactly. They're fine with using Google Play Services because the messages are end to end encrypted, but people are worrisome dogs and I suppose that there is always some concern that Google Play Services could be getting used for more than just the transport (once the app decrypts the messages for example).
