It's far from the worst ever, but it is a big disappointment in just about every way and AMD should have done better if they truly wanted to save their name.

the fucking reference card is selling hotcakes. i'm pretty sure this is the opposite of losing. the launch was certainly bumpy, but not as bad as Sup Forums may lead you to believe.

Honestly, I have felt the stock cooler is a bit wimpy as well from the leaked images. Despite AMD claiming the use of a cooler worthy of a $500 GPU, the heatsink is surprisingly small and underpowered. The only similarities with the Nano and R9 390(X) coolers is aesthetics. Given that cooling is a major factor in overclocking especially with the denser 14nm process, custom AIB models may be the way to go for overclockers as usual. Either way, we won’t have long to wait and find out for ourselves.

yeah, it's disappointing. but it's AMD, they've always sucked at perf/watt, which doesn't mean dick to me. I don't run clusters of GPUs. I use one, two at most. the difference is 5 bucks a year. big deal. give me framerates instead.

it's possible globalfoundries will get their shit together or AMD will switch fabs so that vega doesn't suck complete ass compared to pascal. but that has nothing to do with the 480's value today.

as it stands, nvidia has dick all under 379$ USD, which is where the majority of purchases are made. it's bad business and they're about to lose market share unless the 1060 delivers.

I can give you 3.5 videocards that were worse

I cancelled my Nitro 480 order because my overclocked R9 290 pretty much beat it in a lot of test results. I've ordered a MSI 1070 Gaming X instead which although 200 more will at least give me a pretty beefy boost and allow me to run every 1080 game out there at max settings @ 60 FPS minimum. It will also give me headroom for when I eventually upgrade the monitor.

The custom AIB's won't get much faster than 1400Mhz if you are lucky. They only managed to get to 1600Mhz using a custom water cooler and special electronic addon that allows to pull more from the power connector. They stated already they putting 8 pins instead of 6 won't help you overclock it anymore than 6 pin. This is from elite overclockers who mod the shit out of hardware with soldered on addon's and liquid nitrogen etc and use specialist overclocking software (EvC I think it was called). They know their stuff. The 480 is dead in the water for overclocking on air.

It's fine in terms of performance. The power-draw is obviously a disappointment, 32ROPs was also a retarded choice. The PCIe issue can be fixed with aftermarkets, at least.

For now, I'm pretty sure it's mostly Samsung's shitty process, the power-draw hints towards that. Might get better later on with respective binning.

no one can reliably tell at this point, because no hard info has been released regarding the 460 and 470`other than that they will exist. if you're really on that low of a budget, you might actually want to look into buying something past gen. prices will probably only go down from here.
