How can Linux possibly be the best operating system if it's fucking shit and Windows is far simpler to use and compatible with more programs?

Depends on use-case fucko.

Because it offers more freedom. A true american would not stand to their OS being locked down by third parties. FIGHT FOR FREEDOM FIGHT FOR LINUX

>Linux is an OS

Bait.

Linux is something you need to stick with for some time, otherwise it can seem as though it fights you most of the time. I don't know when the last time you tried Linux was, but it has improved drastically in the past year or so.

I like everything about Linux, except

a. software is often buggy
b. software is often ugly, distros are often ugly and require a lot of customization to make look simple and attractive
c. it's not as intuitive as windows
d. far fewer software choices
e. often requires you to be far more knowledgeable about the OS to achieve your goals, when compared to Windows or MacOS
f. nobody uses it

I like the philosophy behind free and open-source stuff, and also high level of customizability and control, but it requires far more effort to use, and comes with its own unique set of headaches. Sometimes I just want to get something done without having to go through the troubles I often run into with Linux.

Still a fan, but let's be real, there's huge room for improvement, and the fact that a lot of the stuff is being developed and maintained by unpaid volunteers has an effect on the overall quality of the product.

I’d just like to interject for a moment. What you’re refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called “Linux”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

>How can Linux possibly be the best operating system if it's fucking shit and Windows is far simpler to use and compatible with more programs?

You must be either an idiot or drunk to ask such a question? Are you sitting and laughing by yourself? Is the question serious?

Microsoft is an evil corporation. I as a consumer don't want to give money to devils.

managing scroll bars in the kernel
not originally. Back in the 90s, kernel and UI rendering were separated, until they realized that it was too slow, so they decided to move parts of User32 and GDI from user to kernel mode to improve performance. What I never understood, as the hardware was becoming more powerful over time, why couldn't they move those UI components back to user mode? Now it's too late to do it without breaking compatibility.

The main problem with Linux is, it can't compete with Windows and OS X. Both OSes are focused on the end user(especially Apple), but (GNU/)Linux is focused on being a multi purpose OS to suit the needs of desktops, workstations, servers, computing clusters, embedded devices, etc.

I'm terribly sorry for interjecting another moment, but what I just told you is GNU/Linux is, in fact, just Linux, or as I've just now taken to calling it, Just Linux. Linux apparently does happen to be a whole operating system unto itself and comprises a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Most computer users who run the entire Linux system every day already realize it. Through a peculiar turn of events, I was misled into calling the system "GNU/Linux", and until now, I was unaware that it is basically the Linux system, developed by the Linux project.

There really isn't a GNU/Linux, and I really wasn't using it; it is an extraneous misrepresentation of the system that's being used. Linux is the operating system: the entire system made useful by its included corelibs, shell utilities, and other vital system components. The kernel is already an integral part of the Linux operating system, never confined useless by itself; it functions coherently within the context of the complete Linux operating system. Linux is never used in combination with GNU accessories: the whole system is basically Linux without any GNU added, or Just Linux. All the so-called "GNU/Linux" distributions are really distributions of Linux.

>how can linux be the best operation system if its developed for free and offering stability that allows to run 90%+ of supercomputers and a majority of servers
gee i dont know user, if you want it to be simple to use maybe fork 1900 packages and write 200 more to add missing functionality and make a simpler to use distro.
I mean , you can do it and most of the work would be done already. Or you can try writing a new os from scratch.
or maybe lets all ditch linux and OSX and BSD and unix already and use windows on 100% of machines, throw the supercomputers out because they wont work now , and pay bilions for server licences for stupid games and small sites. Also the lets ditch all embedded devices and make them run windows 10. its a great idea user. Thank you for opening my eyes.

Are you saying that this linux can run on a computer without windows underneath it, at all ? As in, without a boot disk, without any drivers, and without any services ?

That sounds preposterous to me.

If it were true (and I doubt it), then companies would be selling computers without a windows. This clearly is not happening, so there must be some error in your calculations. I hope you realise that windows is more than just Office ? Its a whole system that runs the computer from start to finish, and that is a very difficult thing to acheive. A lot of people dont realise this.

Microsoft just spent $9 billion and many years to create Vista, so it does not sound reasonable that some new alternative could just snap into existence overnight like that. It would take billions of dollars and a massive effort to achieve. IBM tried, and spent a huge amount of money developing OS/2 but could never keep up with Windows. Apple tried to create their own system for years, but finally gave up recently and moved to Intel and Microsoft.

Its just not possible that a freeware like the Linux could be extended to the point where it runs the entire computer from start to finish, without using some of the more critical parts of windows. Not possible.

I think you need to re-examine your assumptions.

what the fuck am i reading?

Congratulations. You did it. You finally gave me cancer.

At work I use Linux for professional development.

At home I use Windows for fun and casual learning/studying.

Black & white fag/g/ots BTFO.

That pasta has been around for quite some time. lurk moar.

aside from the normie logic that it implies its not really funny.
Its like that one guy that tells me that nvidia cards are better because nvdia implements bonus features into games like hairworks, physx and tesselation , and gives free games. And im the one who has a gtx 760 and get to experience this stupid garbage creating features that literally just increase my gpu temps and lower some of my fps.

>How can Linux possibly be the best operating system
It can't because it is not a operating system.

>Windows is far simpler
No it isn't, windows is a giant pain in the ass.

>and compatible with more programs?
Not to my experience, with GNU/Linux I get more software of higher quality for no price that respects my privacy and freedom.

>Back in the 90s, kernel and UI rendering were separated, until they realized that it was too slow
Because it was badly designed.

>a. software is often buggy
desu, this is more true for windows software but you are not wrong

>b. software is often ugly, distros are often ugly and require a lot of customization to make look simple and attractive
>c. it's not as intuitive as windows
>d. far fewer software choices
>e. often requires you to be far more knowledgeable about the OS to achieve your goals, when compared to Windows or MacOS
what? no

>f. nobody uses it
And?

>what? no

what, yes?

No, this is simply wrong. Only a person that has not used GNU/Linux or could claim such lies.

>Because it was badly designed.
>source: me

Yes, source me. Have a problem with that asshole? If you knew anything about programming you would know that putting scrollbar and font rendering into the kernel to improve speed is a sign of bad design.

Is the best operating system when you need a shit you need to tailor to your use case.
For desktop use? I agree that GNU/Linux sucks.

>windows is a giant pain in the ass
In what ways?

Or simply the hardware of that era wasn't powerful to do context switching as modern systems do.

The point is that you do not need to do any extra context switches if you design your shit properly.

Like how? Having a monolithic kernel?

>Having a monolithic kernel?
No

Then how?

Linux has better software than Windows.

dont you see threads like this on Sup Forums and similar questions on the internet?:

i can go on but do i really have to?

- No package manager
- Extremely shitty terminal emulator and shell
- Many "papercuts" and annoying bugs everywhere in the default installation that nobody bothered to fix it
- Every good compiler for the majority of the programming languages is not native to windows and use dirty hacks to make them work.
- Lack of multiple important applications or their ports are shitty, most of their replacements are either shitty freeware software or some laggy enterprise shit
- \r\n
- laggy as hell, the default dm is too tightly bound with the rest of the system

t. bedroom sysadmin

what?

>no package manager is a bad thing
Package managers actually are a symptom of the sad state of making applications for Linux really.

>windows
>simple

What is the best linux version to use as a noob? Should I install gentoo?

you herd me bich

Since when?

ubuntu on a virtual machine with some youtube tutorials

what?

Linux is just a meme, this is a windows board.

"no"

?

keep playign with me i dare u

>almost 2020
>he hasn't created his own operating system

Why are there so many plebe on this board?

in the same way as op implies that windows is simpler to use and that linux is shit.

You know, the microsoft's astroturfing helped me to decide to never use windows again if not absolutely necessary.

If you're too retarded to fucking install a gtk/qt theme then maybe you should just end it famalam.

but GNU is legitimately easier to use

Flame war starters on Sup Forums? Why, who would have thought.

>Using GNU AIDS
Stockholm syndrome at it finest!

>complicating his life
Except this is not true.

>because shit did like 20 years ago
Except they still do it, read the links.

Do you even realize what you're saying? Most people grow up using Windows. Stockholm syndrome definitely applies there. With GNU it is usually a personal choice, especially considering it doesn't ship on many computers.

People who like GNU switched to it and just realized it was better. I don't really even think this is worth arguing about, honestly.

>my best argument is name calling because i cannot provide a reasoning.

>he doesn't use BSD
Stockholm syndrome at it finest!

I hole-hardedly agree, but allow me to play doubles advocate here for a moment. For all intensive purposes I think you are wrong. In an age where false morals are a diamond dozen, true virtues are a blessing in the skies. We often put our false morality on a petal stool like a bunch of pre-Madonnas, but you all seem to be taking something very valuable for granite. So I ask of you to mustard up all the strength you can because it is a doggy dog world out there. Although there is some merit to what you are saying it seems like you have a huge ship on your shoulder. In your argument you seem to throw everything in but the kids Nsync, and even though you are having a feel day with this I am here to bring you back into reality. I have a sick sense when it comes to these types of things. It is almost spooky, because I cannot turn a blonde eye to these glaring flaws in your rhetoric. I have zero taller ants when it comes to people spouting out hate in the name of moral righteousness. You just need to remember what comes around is all around, and when supply and command fails you will be the first to go.

Make my words, when you get down to brass stacks it doesn't take rocket appliances to get two birds stoned at once. It's clear who makes the pants in this relationship, and sometimes you just have to swallow your prize and accept the facts. You might have to come to this conclusion through denial and error but I swear on my mother's mating name that when you put the petal to the medal you will pass with flying carpets like it’s a peach of cake.

...

> How's HURD working for you, Richard?

o-ok, pasta saved (no seriously, it's cool).

I actually kinda agree as a linux user , but more in this way:
Its a massive convenience at the cost of additional work from the maintainers/developers.
I mean winfags almost pissed themselves when windows 10 was about to have one but microsoft would not be able to maintain it right, especially if you look at the sorry state of windows automatic driver updates and updates in general since forever.

Off topic: is there any explanation why windows update was/is taking forever to download and install a frikin service pack or something? Downloading SP1 to windows 7 and some basic 50 updates a fresh win7 needs is taking as much time as downloading debian jessie from netinstall and updating it to testing. Are their servers shit or something?

Probably they're limited in some way in the registry precisely to avoid people crying about "Windows Updates slows my internet"

Thats great. I really need to have fast internet while I'm waiting for crucial windows updates that actually let me to install and use my software/games , computer on general. I don't mind sitting through half of the night, at least I'm not fixing xorg.

>How can Linux possibly be the best operating system if it's fucking shit
0/10, try actually trying next time.
