Can Sup Forums help me get a functioning GUI on my Raspberry Pi running FreeBSD?

Also, are there any Window Managers or Desktop environments that are particularly popular amongst *BSD users, or maybe even not typically available for Linux?

But anyway Ive been trying to get a GUI running with no success. :^(

This is my first time ever using a BSD

But nothing work in BSD

but what about that linux compatibility layer?

Sooo, which xorg should i install?

plz halp

very aesthetic desktop. i can't offer any help.

what are you using your pi for?

if you can't figure this out for yourself, you should switch back to Ubuntu

Thanks for the compliment

>what are you using your pi for?
For now, learning FreeBSD

At some point in the future I might turn it into a security camera

CWM is probably the WM most unique to BSD that people actually use. It was developed by OpenBSD and is available on FreeBSD and works a bit differently from linux WMs. For example, it doesn't have multiple desktops but instead you switch between tasks (e.g., one command will call up your IRCs and shit. another will open up your coding shit, etc..)

Getting a gui up should be easy. Just go find a WM and compile/pkg add it and then it'll pull in xorg.

btw may I have your wallpaper pls?

0/10

sure, I took it myself on a Canon DSLR that I modified for InfraRed. For an interesting effect, check out what happens when you run auto white balance in gimp

I have icewm installed. I had xorg-minimal installed, but Xorg -configure kept failing saying no displays found. startx failed the same way. I then installed the package "raspberrypi-userland-20160306" which conflicted with and therefore removed xorg-minimal. Now I have no xorg installed, though icewm remains installed

BSDs don't hold your hand. If he needs his hand held, he should find an OS willing to do so.

I did most of that. That tells you to use a specific FreeBSD image though, which is not the one I am using. Ill go back and try it all again though, maybe I missed something

the fuck are you talking about? FreeBSD has the best and most complete documentation. Also the community is more knowledgeable about FreeBSD and Linux that the Linux community is about Linux.

Again, 0/10

No they aren't. All they """"""know"""""" about Linux is that they are supposed to hate everything GPL'd.

xorg itself

xorg-minimal could work but it doesn't come with enough shit

Oh fuck off you fucking freetard. You just want to turn this thread into another license argument.

>xorg itself
OK I havent tried that yet. installing now...

installing....

sorry slow internet connection

I agree, it's fantastic. OP should try reading it.

Thanks

still installing the full xorg package...

Don't mind me, I'm just lurking this thread to see how op is doing

This is interesting

it's a pretty big one

i wonder why freebsd doesn't have an optional set of pre-installed packages like openbsd/netbsd

OP here, still not working. Xorg -configure has this in its output

scfb trace: probe start
No devices to configure. Configuration failed.

startx has:

Fatal server error:
(EE) no screens found(EE)

well is it plugged in a screen or are you just ssh'ing to it

if it is and it's still not working then try "setenv DISPLAY :0" if you're using csh or "export DISPLAY=:0" if you're using sh

its plugged into a display but I am also sshing into it. For convenience I am running pretty much entirely through ssh but I am running "startx" on the pi itself

I tried the setenv command you mentioned but it does not seem to help.

hm

what about setting DISPLAY to 127.0.0.1:0.0

also can you give us a dmesg since X can't probe hardware

maybe that'll help us find what's missing

Im sorry but can you please clarify how I should run setenv? I think I have been doing it correctly and its still not working when set to 127.0.0.1:0.0

install Aqua

you just type it in the shell

can you give me the output of "echo $DISPLAY" and "echo $SHELL" so we can make sure

pastebin.com/BQzPFtxm

echo $DISPLAY
127.0.0.1:0.0

echo $SHELL
/bin/csh

alright, well that's set

so according to the dmesg the video hardware's also detected

i don't know if X itself is acting wrong

also another question, you running this on a rpi3? those weren't tested according to the wiki

and heres my xorg.conf, located at /etc/X11

pastebin.com/ytv4PSiB

oh, can you try renaming the file to xorg.conf.bak and doing a startx then?

>you running this on a rpi3?
I forget the exact model but its one of the early ones. It has 256MB RAM

yea no change
