Routers

Can we have a router thread? I'd love to know which is the bang for the buck champion, the one that's good in wireless, and those that build their own.

Running pic related: RT-N56U.

I recently flashed openwrt on it, but my family has been reporting
connection drops.

I don't really know much about openwrt and would like to learn, but my
knowledge in networks is practically zero.

Anyone using Intel NUC + switch for routing? Willing to share experiences?

use this

bitbucket.org/padavan/rt-n56u

>This project aims to improve the rt-n56u and other supported devices on the software part, allowing power user to take full control over their hardware. This project was created in hope to be useful, but comes without warranty or support. Installing it will probably void your warranty. My solution to lean is to just install another image? I'm looking around the bitbucket and I'm not getting much info out of it. What is it based on?

It's using opkg as well. Is it based on openwrt? I don't know which came first.

>Intel NUC
That sounds interesting. Isn't it considerably expensive to go with that route?

Bought an RT-AC66U last week and so far it's been great. Much better than the cisco one I bought 8 years ago

...

I'm getting tired of my family pestering for router resets. I have no problems using ethernet, is the wireless that shit? Fuck, I'm going back to stock firmware.

the only access point worth it is the Ubiquiti upa-ac-lite.

likewise, the only router worth it is the ubiquiti edgerouter.

I use a WRT54G running Tomato.

I need a new router. Is the ASUS RT-N66U still a top meme?

...

How trashy are the xaiomi routers.

I really just need better penetrating wifi on a budget as these walls can block a wifi signal two rooms over.

>100mbps only

SHITTTTTTT

My ancient DIR-825 has dual band and gigabit.

Right if I were using ir for a gigbit home/business LAN It wouldnt be worth it...

But Im really just looking to replace the router im getting from charter and at $30 it looks real good

Wireless?
If so it does have dual band and 1167Mbps 802.11ac

Xiaomi Mi WiFi Router 3

for those who use custom firmware in their routers like OpenWRT, Tomato, pfsense and similars, which one you think is the best and why? i want to change my router (a shitty thompson one) with a better one, but having many firmwares just leads to confusion

here.
I gave up on openwrt and went stock. I don't know how it fares on other routers, but I had a bad experience with the wireless dropping.

bump

I have it is great

Third party router firmware is a shit tinfoil hat meme. You make sacrifices on the off chance your data matters to the NSA.

I'm using a PCengines Alix running OpenBSD with a miniPCI wireless card.

How's pfsense?

Who still running the wrt54/g/ here?

I've heard Linksys recent consumer ac routers are shit, but are the ac wrt routers decent at least?

Also, is triband a meme?

Current router

Should I upgrade?

That looks obnoxious and redundant as fuck

I have an Asus RT-N16.

However I use the modem/extender offered by the ISP now. My ISP makes it complicated to use routers, and the supplied one is better than my router anyway. Actiontec T1200H, and the wifi supplied through Actiontec web6000q. It has 5GHz wifi

ASSUMING DIRECT CONTROL

Why would you still be running a router that can only achieve wireless speeds of around 20mbps?

EdgeRouter mustard race coming through

I get 46mbps on my 48/48 connection.

OP here, I made this thread just for this.
I'm sorry.

Are Asus routers a meme? Mine is a piece of shit

I bought mine for 35 bucks. Great router.
>Openwrt
>Not padawan
ya dungoofed m8

You're the reason this board has gone to shit

Nah, I report threads all the time. I reported this thread with different ips already.

Asus is a meme.

I like their other products, but didn't have much luck with their router

Where is a good store to get a "local host"?
Do they have them at best buy?

They sure do.
They have them everywhere.

>connection drops
does that thing have any antennas

It's been solid for me. Got a bit warmer than I liked so I put a fan underneath it.

Ordered one of these for under $30 but probably won't get it until next month.

Doesn't have gigabit ethernet but it does have an android app and supports external usb storage.

>Doesn't have gigabit ethernet
It's shit. At least you didn't pay top dollar for it.

>does have an android app
You say that like it's a good thing

It is when the default webui is in chinese lmao.

Only really cared about AC and mimo on 5GHz to improve wireless connections.

As of right now the N 2.4GHz shit gets knocked out if someone uses a microwave for a few minutes.

Have the same

LAN is always stable. Wifi is stable when less than 3 are active doing something demanding. Starts dropping packets lack crazy when 4 people are streaming video or gaming at the same time

Asus Onhub

/thread

I have the same, for about a year now. No complaints thus far

Why do Asus love to do such shitty, edgy designs? I love their stuff but it's like it's designed for teenagers.

Taiwanese

these routers are being marketed for gamers

see Much more tame design

is this chink botnet Sup Forums?

>He doesn't have a switch anyways
What a loser lol

Just a bit of advice. Never get the ASUS RT-AC66U. I've had one for a while now and it's put me off to ASUS routers forever.

The official firmware is shit and options half the time don't do what they say they. An example of this is with port forwarding. The past 3 versions of firmware broke port forwarding where setting up ports to be forwarded did absolutely nothing. On the most modern firmware it works about 50% of the time. Another some other settings that are "placebo" are disabling the integrated firewall, NAT passthrough, and DMZ.

Why not install custom firmware then? I don't know if this is common practice but on this particular router you cannot get full download speed on custom firmware if you go above a certain level. For example I have 300 down and on the custom firmware I used (Tomato and a few others) I could never get about 120 down, after reverting to official firmware i was getting full speed. I read up on the problem and it appears to be that custom firmware is intentionally locked out of certain settings in the router that allows speed levels above a certain amount.

These are just a few of the multitude of problems I have experienced with this particular router. The thing seems well built as in it hasn't died on me yet but it doesn't make up for all the other issues.

is me. Maybe I have a lemon but this router has been nothing but trouble.

>we want the apple audience design
>hand wave Wi-Fi boost on a particular device
>firmware auto update
>a fucking speaker
>bluetooth
>nightlight led
a whole bunch of gimmicks
too bad it doesn't post selfies on Instagram

god-tier

custom firmware is just a huge meme.

never had much luck with Tomato on my RT-N16 either. tried the toastman and shijby whoever builds

the thing is, the hardware is really solid and it doesnt look like a stealth bomber

the newest versions require an iOS or Apple device for configuration. There is no web-config or windows client anymore.

why would you buy one if you don't already have apple products?

because it is a good router.

then buy a good computer to go with it!

Was considering one for my next router. I've never used an Apple router so does it have all the options you'd expect? Port forwaring, DMZ, NAT, Custom blocking, Dual band, etc?

i don't know about custom blocking, but yes to everything else.

See I wouldn't mind running the stock firmware if it wasn't such shit itself. I was forced into custom for a while due to the port forwarding issues.

I have a 2.8 GHz cellery with 3 NICs in it, booting Alpine linux off a CD-R. Works great. For wireless, I have Ubuntu Ministation 2.

Now obviously this takes more time, effort and knowledge to set up then a consumer router box. But I have the knowledge and know consumer router box will have 3 PHYs. They all have the wifi and LAN on the same segment. Something I refuse to do. I want a strong firewall between potential strangers and my LAN.

Of course, this all takes up more room and power then a consumer router. But room I have lots of.

Good. The only thing that's really fucking strange is that it only has a 3 port switch. No clue why they didn't go with the standard 4.

Seriously, why would you run a router with stock firmware? Tomato just works so much better.

Pfsense is enterprise grade. Being built on freebsd means access to lots of additional software.

WRT-1900AC and WRT1200AC are great for dd-wrt. Stock works okay but has cloud shite. Consumers will not be bothered by it, makes NAS easy to do.

Like I said, custom firmware is often horribly written.

the Toastman build of Tomato was absolutely shit, it would shit itself every time I changed a setting

Not him but in the case I mentioned earlier my router legitimately cannot get speed downloads without official firmware. It's a pretty big fuck you.

I have pfsense on a j1900 board. Handles gigabit routing (capable of faster).

Third party firmware is for adding functionality first and adding security second.

I forgot that this was Sup Forums - brand loyalty and that most of you don't actually know anything much beyond how to reset your router.

Thank you for your contribution to this thread

netgear wndr series, look in 4k range

except most custom router firmware is just for the sake of ricing it

it's gentoo tier autism

any thoughts on the asus n300 modem/router? also any ausbros here with the telstra t-gateway NBN router?

Openwrt really isn't very good unless.you want to have vlans. But you are probably just better off getting a tiuter that supports it.

Excellent, and I mean excellent piece of hardware. Just remember to put it in a upright position with the stand, since it heats up much less in comparison to horizontal position. Also, asuswrt merlin is a must.

Bought one to use on iinet ADSL, had to RMA it because it would stop DNS lookups after 10-15 minutes till it was reset. Second one refused to connect on 802.11n and was returned. I've fallen back to my shitty linksys for now and am still trying to work out a suitable replacement. YMMV, but heads up.

Use merlin firmware, dumbass!

Anything CISCO

Dd wrt is garbage on the 1200ac. I have one and the latest builds either dont support the 2.4ghz radio at all or have some memory issue that requires rebooting it every few days. I am using some customised build of open wrt and just making due with no 2.4ghz since almost all my tech supports ac.

Got this a bit ago (Netgear, I know) and it's been stable and has great range.

With free ISP you have 250gb Nas, wifi ac

I am with ddwrt, but I can't seem to find a firmware revision that both allows working port forwarding and working wifi security.

> pic
enjoy ur cancer

anuda one

I have the DIR-862L

It's kinda shit but it was only $40 mapledollars with no tax

is pfsense really good? how it compares to let's say, openwrt or tomato/merlin?

and anoda one
