You can shut her off using this incredibly ugly method. Note: this will kill the search functionality.
Step 1. Find file properties of the massive and unwieldy file cortana lies in. Can't remember what it is off the top of my head. Have a window readied to change the name of this massive file ASAP. You can't right now because, obviously, she's running in the background and consuming resources.
Step 2. Kill her process using whatever method you like. She won't stay dead for longer than 30 seconds. Change the name of the file now!
Step 3. Destroy cortana and a convenient part of your OS you shouldn't have to compromise and lose but have to because Microsoft blows ass.
Step 4. Gaze longingly at your now deprecated search bar. Click on it for no effect besides maybe some placebo.

Have got plenty of experience with linux through work, uni and my own servers so it's no problem.
Hopefully someone will find a way to make all windows games compatible with linux with the same performance as on windows (wine does not do this).

Keep a windows box/drive for gaming and run Linux on everything else. Don't fall for the Arch or Gentoo meme unless you know what you're doing. Choose Debian or a Ubuntu variant like Kubuntu or ElementaryOS. Learn to rice it how you like with conky, plank, Compton, compiz, icon theme, etc... WPS Office is the best MS-Office replacement on Linux.

Quality post right here. I would add get a mac if you simply don't have the time to learn (American's are severely overworked right now). You can get a used Mac Pro (early 2008) on eBay for less than the cost of a PS4. Then grab a PCI card that lets you slap on a SSD (and boot from it) and a USB 3.0 card (both dirt cheap) from Amazon.
Machine won't run the upcoming OSX (who fucking cares) but it will run the latest OS incredibly fast and stable. The boot time is insane. You can slap in a 3rd part GTX 680 and still play Fallout 4 where it auto detects and sets it's video settings to "very high" on bootcamp (I still recommend building a PC for that, but if money is an issue, it's an option). Also, even though the hardware isn't very good for customization, the OS is shockingly great at it.
