yes

just get 16, ram is so fucking cheap

No longer enough for what?

Maybe

I'm on 4gb atm and it's still enough on a laptop, but I'll get another 8gb module before ddr3l becomes overpriced
basically buy now before ddr3 becomes legacy

my chink cube i7 tablet is 4 GB and it's plenty fast for typical tablet tasks

...

Like two years ago

>indie game with mods
>running out of 8GB constantly

today apparently

>mfw my two year old laptop comes with an 8gb stick and a spare empty slot for me to use over time.
The knew it, based Acer chinks

Sounds like a unique problem with a unique solution - stop running complete garbage stacked on top of other garbage.

Depends on how long you plan to use Chrome.

>intensive user
>8gb ram
>not even a pagefile enabled for the SSD not to wear out
>sofware less ram-demanding over time
>never ever max'd out ram yet
Glad I didn't fall for the 16gb ram meme

On a performance rig?
Back in 2012.
On a day to day normal task, and gaymen
Still holding on, though, there is no excuse to upgrade to 16gb since it's cheap.
Normie machine, it's perfect.
Casuals can easily get by on 4gb.

It already isn't enough.

Never had this problem.

If I can get my old p4 to just fine with 2 gigs in 2016 (I know, I know)
you shouldn't be worried with 8gigs for a while yet

What game is it?

>2016
>people still use RAM and storage separately

I really hate this bloat the web has been getting.

Depends on the usage. As one who fell for the "8GB is enough" meme, I'm now having problems properly running a Windows VM due to the RAM requirements.

>8 GB of RAM
holy shit, what a poorfag

currently using 16 GB of RAM with 32 GB of RAM on its way in the mail..

Starsector

Open another tab of Chrome. You will now need more RAM.

it already isn't enough

I like my women like I like my computers:
Rammed.

8GB isn't enough if you are using a VM or more. I wish I has 16GB but I am poor.

I upgraded to 16gb just because its cheap now. Glad i did. I can now open more tabs of porn in chrome.

my macbook only has 8gb ram. and it's soldered

Cities: Skylines.

Or anything in Unity that uses agent-based simulation

open case and unsolder, ohh wait.

And people still supports this shit company.

>implying it's enough now

That Fallout 4 better be pirated.

I often hit top memory with chrome open if I forget to close it while playing a game.

>just get 16, ram is so fucking cheap

on a desktop

DDR4 16 GB 2133 MHz for 60€.
Yay or nay?

Why are you asking us?

Ynay

>ddr4
>ay 2133

lmao my ddr3 is faster than that

Why would I pirate a game?

Isn't this a RAM thread?

Even 2 GB is enough still

>crucial
never again

What are you using it for?
If all you're doing it browsing the web and typing up documents then 1gb of RAM would be enough as long as you use a linux distro.

>what is latency
Lower clocked ram may be faster than higher clocked.

Obviously not. There's no suicidal wojak with red filter on the OP.

I believe that's the point he's trying to make rex.

>MUH MGAHUERTS
>doesn't list CL
lmao

CL 15

>2133 MHz / 15 = 142.2 MHz
lmao, that's slower than the DDR3 ECC 1600 MHz CL11 memory I just ordered:
>1600 MHz / 11 = 145.5 MHz

enjoy your shit performance I guess. (in b4 “but muh DDR4”)

Alll my friends have at least 16GB. They'd nickname you ghetto kid if u showed up with less than that to our neighborhood

Ditch those "friends".

Why can't he?

Do memory ranks make a difference?

keep in mind this is ECC memory, which is already inherently slower than non-ECC memory.

Implying macfags know how to solder

I figure that, but I was wondering if Apple did something else to fuck these dumbasses even if they know how to solder.

How could that be when he doesn't know the clock latency values of the ddr4 ram his ddr3 ram is supposedly faster than?

Yeah, they made their products so shitty that the only people who can stand using them are morons - which is the best security feature against tampering you can have

They already break warranty anyway

Still using 2GB for normal day stuff.

indie game devs are worse at writing code than literal pajeets, they pull off writing 2d games with 90s level graphics that barely get 60 fps on 2016 hardware

> ECC
> 3 MHz difference
> DDR3
> lmao
You should be 18+ to post here

>How long until 8GB of RAM is no longer enough?

>being this jealous

I still haven't bought that RAM. I can buy a 16 GB Kingston Savage DDR4 2400 MHz CL 12 non-ECC RAM for 96€.

Actually, game engines nowadays are pieces of shit too.
It is retarded how 10 years ago you could build 3D games on Source which could run on fucking toasters, but nowadays you need a middle end PC to run 2D games.

>non-ECC
I hope your data is worth nothing

What that even means?

Yes

Systems without ECC memory are very prone to catastrophic failure including loss of your entire filesystem, crashes, or undetected errors in your business logic.

Imagine a bit flip while compiling, say, firefox. Suddenly you end up with a firefox process that will crash randomly, also causing potential data loss

Really, given the relatively minor extra price you need to pay for ECC (over non-ECC) there's little reason to risk your data and stability just for the sake of saving a few cents

danluu.com/why-ecc/

Non-ECC grant better performance though and I heard people say that ECC are literally useful only for servers.

People should stop upgrading to better hardware. Users having better hardware encourages developers to not write good software since they know the users can just brute force through the crap code anyway.

Yeah, nah, that's just cheaper.

>I heard people say that ECC are literally useful only for servers.
Because most people only story their data in the cloud :^) But keep in mind you also need a mainboard and CPU that supports it.

>Non-ECC grant better performance though
You can get the same performance by paying a bit more. Compared to your CPU or GPU it's still only a fraction of what you're paying anyway. How much is your data worth?

I'm planning to store my data on my external HDD, whereas I'll put OS and games and maybe even music on my SSD.

OR how about you just stop being poor.
Find a job, aspie. Leave your parent's basement. Be a real man.

I have 2GB in my thinkpad and an SSD.
I haven't really felt the need to add more ram because everything is so snappy, but it's so cheap now, holy shit.

Maybe I should max it out?
Am I wasting money?

2GB of what? RAM?
KYS.
You haven't even stated what laptop.

So how do you plan on keeping that data secure? Do you have a backup system in place? Does your backup system use ECC? Or are you relying on the hard drives alone? Do you have redundancy (RAID)? What raid technology? How fault tolerant is it against memory errors?

Don't you mean high-speed rammed?

x201

Barely, my machine has 2gb and works pretty well but I don't use it for much more than web design.

>and that causes me butthurt

2GB + SSD is god-tier

Unless you play games, this is enough for anyone.
Swapping is so lag-free you don't even notice the lack of ram.

Just make sure you have 4GB of swap on your SSD.

1gb is easily enough for casual use too.

>tfw fell for the 2TB ram meme

trash it away
get x220/x230

fuck off

12gb ram master race

16 gigs is the new standard tbqh, everything is bloaty as fuck these days

My laptop cost 1100... I got 16gb memory... i7-5700hq, gtx 970m 3gb, 128gb ssd 1TB hdd (7200) ..... just don't jew yourself when you buy a laptop. Not wanting to spend a few extra dollars now means your stuck with it later. Instead of buying it and upgrading it like a pc you have to think about what you need for the next few years and start there. Called using your head.

Depends what you do.

If it's a Facebook machine, 8GB is fine. If you do pretty much anything else you'll want 16. You may never use every megabyte but you'll be glad for the headroom.

Plus it's cheap as balls these days and you can always use the spare memory for things like a RAMDisk like I do. I have 2GB of my RAM dedicated to a RAMDisk which holds my firefox cache and some of my photoshop scratch disk. I can also use it to transfer large files between disks almost instantly. So if I have a chunky file I want to move from local to storage, I can move it to the ramdisk first in less than 2 seconds and then move it from there to storage in the same amount of time, whereas even on Sata 6Gb/s the file might take minutes to transfer directly from disk to disk, if I had more than 16GB I could move GIANT files around instantly, but 2GB is enough space to move most stuff conveniently, even if it means doing it in batches. If you really wanted to I bet you could even write a small program that would automate the process so that you could drag and drop files from different disks and it would automatically pass them through the RAM disk first.

My negroid compatriot.

>facebook
2GB is fine. Don't forget Windows 10 was designed to work with that amount of memory. There is also page file.

>8GB RAM
>i7 processor
>graphic card is an outdated Nvidia 540M and my coolers are so shit I can't even run stuff like Warframe on the lowest settings with everything disabled without apparently damaging my motherboard

I just wanna play video games. This wasn't too bad back in 2011 but I'm low on cash so I can't even build a proper PC or anything.

Well desu, I have the same card with quad core i7 and it's fine. You can even run GTA V on this GPU. What's your issue?

My laptop tends to overheat when playing.

Just checked again, it's got a Nvidia 540M GT but the problem is the temperature, framedrops aside, it tends to heat up to around 70-75°C when playing.
