Ubuntu is managed by Canonical, and conforms to their proprietary standards. Many people migrate to GNU+Linux to escape that, where Ubuntu is one of the few mainstream distros that do not provide this freedom.

Any other normie distro is fine. Fedora is a good choice if you're starting out, Debian isn't terrible unless you want that cutting edge.

Debian isn't that great. It's main features are "it just works" and high adoption. It's repositories aren't that large and not very up to date. The recommended kernel is still 3.XX.

Fedora is more cutting edge in terms of software and is based on RHEL. RHEL based distros run the internet at this point in time, proving it's stability, security and trustworthiness. Fedora is also primarily used and developed as a distro for the desktop, where debian is more targeted at server use.

I'm using Ubuntu MATE atm. Installed xmonad for main UI, the Gnome-2-esque MATE is just backup. Canonical keeps shit up to date. It just werks.

snaps are the next big thing until we get Android for desktop.

Canonical has a bad track record and all, but *buntu is some of the most straightforward shit there is, it really does just work with minimal head scratching

i never try any other distro but ubuntu work pretty fine for me i don't want to go apple because it cost way to much, and windows suck so bad with with window 10. so Ubuntu work just fine highly customizable et stable work like a charm.
