My PC is resetting rarely. I get no BSOD at all, just a reset as if I pressed the reset button.

The event viewer says Kernel-power critical problems. Also recently I had memory problems, I solved my problems by cleaning the RAM slots, and then the PC booted fine. But back then I was getting BSODs.

could be a problem with your case
try disconnecting the front panel, the jumper might be screwy

I have 4 drives in my computer, two of them have an operating system.

>How do I set consistent drive letters?

Both of the drives that have an OS on them set the drive that holds their OS as C: when you're on that OS, respectively

i am a cheap asshole and i want to use an old laptop's screen as a monitor for my PC.

is there a way to do this?

Yes, I've done it before.

Take the screen apart, find the model number of the panel then start looking for control boards for that model on ebay.

It was years ago so I don't know if you'll find one for the exact panel you have. Building a stand or bracket for it is fun part, made mine out of meccano.

But if you're a cheap asshole then you can get monitors from 2nd hand shops for less than the control boards.

What's the best browser for a computer with a really shitty CPU? My dad has a crappy laptop that he uses for only browsing the internet and it's slow even with the SSD I put in it recently. Not worried about its RAM usage, it has 4gb and he doesn't understand how tabs work so he only ever uses one, CPU is the big bottleneck.

I don't want to use Windows 10 on this laptop I'm buying

Should I go full autistic and Linux or just use windows 7

I am about to have a seizure. The cords simply refuse to go into my PSU. The MB and PERIF ones work without issue. The CPU and VGA ones absolutely will not go in at all and I cannot figure out why.

is that the one supplied with the PSU?

If you have no real windows specific things you need, just give linux a shot.

Worst comes to worse, you hate it and can just switch out. It's easier to go back to Windows than to leave your comfort zone once you are on windows.

I recommend either Xubuntu or Linux Mint. (Really I don't recommend linux mint but everybody raves about it as "the linux for people who are new to linux")

Use windows 7.

Yes. All of them are. I have discovered the opposite end WILL go into the PSU, but the other one will not go into the GPU at all.

So what do people usually use for mounting iso's in Windows 7?

Dumb question I'm sure but I've used daemon tools lite for so long I don't know if anything is better

rma it then

are all the pins the right shape?
try moving it one to the right

I use magicISO, they have virtual drives and context menus.

>Right click ISO
>Mount

And it appears like an optical drive

rma?

Somehow managed to finagle the other end into the GPU. It seems that asking is enough to progress.

Also the GPU (GTX 1070) has enough space for more cords of the same type to plug in. Do I need to fill the VGA 2 slot as well?

>motherboard
>bent some of the capacitors on it and might've took some off
>also may of touched some other shit
Will i get electricuted in any way if i turn it on? will it start smoking? Or will it just not do anything?
>shitty intel p4 cpu
>may or may not of scratched the bottom
Will it electricute me / smoke or any bad shit if i was to try to power it again into a working socket, or will it just straight up not work?

RMA means return it for a replacement

and yes you do

what's the point of buying motherboards that are over $100?

More tweaking options in the BIOS, and more headers for shit, crossfire / sli support, etc.

What am I to do with the little two pin that will just be left dangling? Is that safe?

Depends what features you want.

Overclocking options, better chipsets, more pci slots, more sata ports, raid options, usually upgraded versions of whatever tech (USB 3.0, sata3)

Yes absolutely fine, some cards use 8 pins, some use 6. That's why they're separated.

Anyone?

>start windows
>log in
>"Group Policy failed to connect"
Been googleing this issue with almost no support.

The only thing I found is this and its EXACTLY what has been happening to me.

You cannot mix and match power cables from different modular power supplies.

Also what is the model of your PSU ?

More features.
I suggest people buy mobos on their actual usage patterns now what they dream up using their PCs for.

Ok, I'll give that a shot then. Thanks

I was about to report the same thing. wtf is up with this seriously. wont let me install .net frame work because of this

Just so I don't have to come back and suffer this again, everything seems correct here, yes? The two pin seems a bit less "in" but it doesn't come out easily.

I've been having this as well. I haven't noticed it effecting anything though

Nope your fine man. Enjoy the vidya

Take the plug out, put the two pin one in first, then the big one.

Looks like it has tabs that mean you have to do it that way.

Drive letters are a windows thing and the local system drive is always C:, all you can do is trying to change them from within the OS. Not sure you can do that with active partitions.

Can say I have the same thing. Haven't noticed anything until I tried this I'm scanning with mbam right now just in case.

>Drive letters are a windows thing and the local system drive is always C:
I think you can in fact change it, but only during the windows installation; you are too late when it is installed.

Running something like no-script/umatrix and ublock would have a bigger impact than switching browsers. Try getting FF and play with the settings trying to make a whitelist as friendly as possible for him.

The two pin one is in first. It's on the right.

The cables are from the PSU. EVGA 750 G2. It seems fine and i'm probably retarded because I've been working on this for 10 hours or so and my nerves are shot. All I have left is a bit of wiring and the HDD though and I should be ready to go. I hope.

it'll literally holocaust you mane don't do it

It might start throwing some sparks from those capacitors. Just put it on a wood table (something non conductive) and give power via the PSU and use the screw driver trick on the motherboard I/O panal (where you would hook up a case's on button to) to turn on the motherboard.

It might spark and send out smoke, and it does, its localized so it wont arc or anything, just be on standby to flip the power button on the PSU

>The cables are from the PSU. EVGA 750 G2.
I've got the the same PSU.

I have a question here..
in this pic you posted, it looks like your connector is 3x2 pins. That is 3 pins across 2 pins down
Why are you doing that when all the VGA connectors on the G2 are 8 pin ( 4x2)

pic related, its what the back of the G2 looks like.

Looks like you're doing something wrong here..

What OS are you running? My win10 box does this. Never stays on for longer than 5-6 days.

Do you mean you're running a separate OS on each physical disk? You can use computer management > disk management to set drive letters for physical disks in windows.

If you're planning to run linux, make sure your laptop can run your distro without needing autism-level compilation of your mouse drivers

If you're trying to make a boot USB/CD... You can literally extract the ISO to the drive...

Now my question:

I'm trying to wget wget phpbb.com/files/release/phpBB-3.1.9.zip and the wget keeps failing. Trying to DL the file in a browser works fine, but I get a 404 whenever I try to DL it via wget. See screenshot.

Windows 7

That was the whole "retarded" thing.

Possibly related, there's no harm in having the HDD this close to the fans, is there? And then feeding the cords in through the side?

What is it called when console applications receive user input? like users typing in the console application directly? I want to find a package for nodejs that does this but so far what I've found does get the input but gets fucked when I'm also logging stuff so for instance if I have this

blablablabla
INPUT>
and I start typing
blablablabla
INPUT>wew l

it will get fucked like
blablablabla
INPblabla
blablabla
UT>ad

I installed windows 7 and I'm trying to install the manual update for it, but it's saying that the update is not applicable to my computer.
I already updated windows update, but that's all that I've done to this VM install

How come K-sku processors have so much higher TDP than the non-K parts?

I know they're stock clocked a bit higher, but it can't affect it that much can it?

>Possibly related, there's no harm in having the HDD this close to the fans, is there? And then feeding the cords in through the side?

something feels off here..

the drive looks like its right up against the fan and it looks like you've barely got any room for the connectors..
What case is that ?

oops, grabbed the wrong image

CM Storm Trooper. And I was doing something a bit wrong there. Involves some very frustrating drive cages.

found the solution after limiting search results to 1 year
reddit.com/r/sysadmin/comments/4js88o/microsoft_release_a_new_convenience_rollup_for/d39a7h2
not sure why that isn't included in the original file
but it seems to be working great
they also have higher clock speeds.
it also makes it really obvious how inefficient these chips get at these higher clocks

Why CentOS is so underated? Its a great OS, I have it installed in a 2010 laptop and works great. I always see the attention goes always to Ubuntu/Mint but I love not to be worried to upgrade my OS in a while. I think people should give it a try

At what point during construction is it safe to turn on my PC to ensure everything is connected?

sup Sup Forums

i have a pretty large music collection that i listen to by streaming it
i was thinking about storing it, but not on my pc, because i want to access it even if thr pc is off
so i would need a media server, but i don't really know if i should build it just for that. is the raspberry pi 3 enough for this? it's cheap and tiny, and i can keep it running all the time.

what do you think?

did you just slap in that HDD in there without any mounting rails ?

>frustrating drive cages
I got it fixed up.

Any good site where i can find free and cracked apk files for android

Please respond. I'm paranoid of my motherboard exploding.

Honestly you sound incompetent.
You should call over a friend that knows what they are doing to help you before you fuck something up beyond repair.

It sounds like you have no experience doing this and to make matters worse by the sound of things you're not even reading any manuals. This is just a recipe for broken hardware/issues you do not have the understanding to solve.

cent OS is primarily used for "for fun" linux servers, not the kind that you directly use all the time.
Fedora is the "workstation" OS
I normally just put all the base components inside and wire it up ghettoly as my main test.
then after that I do a nice job cable managing everything and finish wireing up the unimportant things (like hard drives and fans)
rpi 3 should be plenty
the storage is slow as balls on it, but for music you only really need like 1Mbps which an rpi 3 can easily do.
no
don't be so worried
DOAs are pretty rare, and it's only the 1/100+ that experienced a DOA that will complain loudly (since you wouldn't be running around the internet yelling about something that worked exactly as expected)
also building a pc only takes like 30 minutes minus the cable management.
just fucking toss everything in there and you will be good to go.

you are plugging the wrong end into the psu ya donger
flip the cable around

Ubuntu is shit tier linux for noobs and normalfags, but centos isn't much better.
Install gentoo.

>no
Why ?

why does everyone always have consoles or something running and open in setup pictures

what value does that even provide

What anime should i watch .

I never trust pirated software
just buy the app, return it, buy it again, then refund it from the website and you get the app for free.
I did it about 7 times in 3 months and never had anything bad happen to me.
also make a backup of the app just in case google patched it (I haven't had an android device as my main phone in over a year)
they usually have screenfetch open in it which shows off their specs
anything else is either what they are doing, or for showing off (probably both)
some people will also have weeaboo pictures open for some retarded reason and I never get that.
an hero

>you're not even reading any manuals
I read every manual available to me and have done the best I can dredging every bit of information from year old forum posts and /sqt/. The case itself has an absolute garbage manual. The only point where I genuinely fucked up was in regard to a few cables and I fixed that. While I am extremely nervous, the only thing that I'm really worried about by this point is just how many goddamn cables there are inside the thing and if I somehow managed to fuck up and miss one but the only thing that I could possibly have done that with is just the LEDs anyway.

I live in a 3rd world country . we cant buy stuff from Google play .

>Why [X] is so underated? Its a great OS.

Literally what I thought about pretty much any Linux distro I've tried. They're all good (the ones that are still developed), cause they're all Linux.

Notable exception: Mint, and especially LMDE. Fuck that half-assed clusterfuck.

what's wrong with mint? I like it

Finally moved from my parents' place
Any general apartment cleaning tips?
How often should I vacuum?

House is a product of technology, right?

So I just got a laptop and am wanting to have a mobile hotspot or dongle for internet anywhere. What's the best way to this? I'd only use aboit 3-6gigs a month.

once a week

don't fall for meme technologies such as "bag-free" vacuums and don't buy a high power machine, as power consumption is not necessary means increased suction.

Pros and cons of putting a PC in sleep mode?

Thanks a lot

Sharks are pretty fucking rad for a large house.

depends on how dirty you are/how lazy
if you are really clean you can get away with once every two weeks
if you are dirty or not lazy just do it once a week.
just get a tethering plan off your cell phone.
you will get much better signal (and usually better speeds)
also if you have an android device running an aosp rom some carriers (like tmobile) can't tell that you are tethering. so I had basically unlimited tethering
pro: is usable faster than shutting down, and almost as fast as leaving it on
con: uses slightly more power than being off
I just let my pc go to sleep after an hour of not using it, then I have wake on lan setup in case I need to remotely access it

Can I use a 3pin fan as a CPU fan?

yes, it will just run at 100% at all times and your motherboard might think that there isn't a fan (unlikely)
but why would you want to use that as a fan?

Replacement for EVO 212 fan
I figured high static pressure would be good for pushing air through a heatsink.

I have some pirated files (exactly those distributed by the cracking team) in my Mega account.

What are the chances of them being deleted if the same files (same hash and everything) get reported and deleted on another account (therefore telling Mega that my files are also illegal)?

Has anything like that ever happened before, that you know of?

I don't really trust their "we don't know what's inside", especially after their recent change of owners.

As long as it has a tachometer signal it will work for the CPU
3 pin fans still have the tachometer pin.

Have a i5 3570k with stock fan
This has never been an issue until now, for some reason I'm now hitting temps of 80-100

My brother just offered me his unused cpu fan (stock fan for a xeon i3 1231)
Is it worth switching with mine even if his doesn't have thermal paste on it?

>inb4 by an aftermarket fan, don't have the cash atm

Vibration and heat/cool cycles disrupts the thermal paste interface over time. Just get some thermal paste and remove/clean/remount the heat sink.
Throwing a heat sink with no thermal paste on will just make it worse.

How can I open file with spacebar instead of enter key in windows 7?

Is it truth that Microsoft sends malware trough security updates if you have a pirate copy of windows after XP?

>inb4 all Microsoft updates are malware.

Thermal paste plus my old fan or thermal paste plus my brother's one?

Is there any advantage to putting your desktop to sleep when you're going to be away from it for an hour or so?

What's better for the components?

You don't wear out your storage device (if you turn off hybrid sleep).

But instead you wear out your fans.

Also less energy consumption than outright shutting down the device.

They're probably identical intel stock heat sinks, it shouldn't make any difference.

I would be more than happy to help you out with your build if you still need help. If it's your first time it can be rough to do alone.

WRT your video card, I was very worried about the 6+2 pin connector. The 2 pin notch MUST be under the 6 pin notch. You shouldn't be able to pull out the 2 pin solo before the 6 pin with the latch comes off.

Definitely not. Most likely you're NOT getting updates because it's a pirated copy.

You're actually just more vulnerable to things bad people find out by reverse-engineering security fixes in those updates you're not getting.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE Also clean off the thermal paste on whatever cooler you're going to use and the CPU before you apply more.

You can gently swab it off using an alcohol dipped cotton swab. There's a recommended alcohol % but I can't remember off the top off my head, just google it.

Then when you're applying the thermal paste just put a juicy pea-sized orb in the center of the cpu and squish it evenly with the heatsink when it put it on.

There should be enough to create a thin layer, but make sure it's not too much to where it'll squeeze out the sizes.

Cant i just use a tissue or something?

Naw tissues leave residue or whatever. I guess paper towels would be fine too.

Also don't get that thermal paste on yourself or clothes, it is a fucking bitch to get off. Stained my first apartment's sink cuz of that shit.

so i got my first free lance cuz memes and now im stunned. I thought it was going to be a rest + spa react app but instead its some wierd mix of badly implemented react and .net which I know nothing about, what to do and what the hell are services (i generally know but in .net) and DTO's. the whole thing runs on IIS.

the really worst thing about it is that i bragged about my parents who said that computers won't do good for me and its only for smart 1% of the people and now im going to fail or what?

>react and .net
Well you probably got a set of requirements you were hired for. So you do what software engineering really is...

Stack Overflow, Learning, and Coding.

So, I got my PC back from the repair shop and they left these things in my Downloads folder. Are they safe to delete?
