Minimum Specs for Music Production

So I am looking to buy a mac for college.

>inb4 hurrdurr mac fagit

The only reason I'm buying a mac is because I want to be able to use Logic to produce music.

I am thinking of going for a Macbookpro, but I don't know what model I should get. Right now, I have a choice between

a 2.7ghz dual core i5 with 8 gigs of RAM

and a 2.9ghz dual core i5 with 8 gigs of RAM

I looked on various websites, and from what I can tell, you need a lot of RAM(at least 16 gigs) and a good processor(i7 was recommended) to produce music. I only have 8 gigs on my desktop(picrelated), but I have a 3.3 ghz i3 processor, and I am able to use Ableton without issue.

I guess my question is, without 16 gigs of RAM, will it matter which of the two above mentioned models I get?

You could think about a Hackintosh, but if you're only using that one productive software then go for it.

Maybe you can save a bit when buying a used model. A Haswell or Ivy Bridge Macbook is almost similar strong, I would then go for a i7 and 16 GB.

use lmms on linux to produce your faggot music, faggot.

>lmms
>using adobe flash tier porn game UI bullshit

lol fuckoff you retard. and fuck your linux too.

>you need a lot of RAM(at least 16 gigs)
lol

ableton just needs an i5 2nd gen at most and 8gb of ram tops for anything you plan on doing (even with loads of plugins)

>lmms

do linuxfags choose the most ugly, nondescript and autistic names for apps on purpose?

>ableton just needs an i5 2nd gen at most and 8gb of ram

im not going to be using ableton most likely

i was thinking of using logic. i have ableton on my pc but I won't have it on my future mac.

does the same apply though?

the only reason I said you need 16 gigs is because that's what I read on the website. I used to own an imac and it was painfully slow, so I was inclined to believe them.

>ugly
>apps
Kill yourself macfag

wasn't even me

Not yet, it isn't.

The 0.2ghz difference between the processors is going to be literally unnoticeable. Even going back a few cpu generations you probably won't see any real performance loss for the shit you'll be doing.

IMO get the cheapest thing you can. If you find out you actually need more then sell it or trade it for the step up. IIRC macbook pros can have their ram upgraded, so you have that option as well. For babby university shit you probably won't need much.

And I can guarantee that you won't need a brand new macbook to do your shit with. That would be a fucking retarded class requirement. Save your money and spend it on clothes, drugs, a car, art or some other stupid shit so people don't think you're a neet Sup Forums faggot.

8 GB of RAM is not enough.
Music production on macs is a meme.
Logic is crap.

You have no idea what you're getting into. I'll give you half a year before dropping out or switching majors. Save your cash and invest in good studio amps and speakers instead.

it's not a class requirement though. I'm jsut looking for a macbook that is powerful enough to produce music with(using Logic).

I think I already know what I'm going to get though. According to this guy

I should be set. Although he was referring to ableton, I'm sure it won't be too different with Logic.

>I'll give you half a year before dropping out or switching majors

niqqa, do you think i'm majoring in music production?

lmao. It's jsut something I want to do as a hobby.

>8 GB of RAM is not enough.

Can you further any of these points? Right now it just sounds like you are shitposting. So far, 8 gigs has worked for me on my PC, and according to this guy

it should work just as well on a mac.

A better CPU will help with speed, a modern i5 is more than enough though.
The 8GB of RAM is really not going to be enough though, it'll slow you to a halt if you're using a HDD and kill your SSD very quickly if you're using one. Really you don't need 16GB, but it's pretty hard to find 12GB.

And OP proved he was retarded yet again.

fuckoffanddie

no one else had a problem with my post

if you are so mad that you have to bother other people on the internet, why don't you take a break from the basement and go see if mommy will give you any tendies. mommy loves you.

>niqqa, do you think i'm majoring in music production?

You better not.

>majoring in music production

m8, I don't even think that is possible.

Just decide by do setting your maximum budget and shopping around from there. Chances are an older Mac will do just fine. You don't need top of the line gear for music. Newer is better for the most part, cause it'll last you longer, but a 2008 MBP is gonna run Logic pretty damn well for any home studio purposes.

Depends on what you're doing, if it's stupid electronic music then I guess a mid range cpu and 8gb's probably won't bother you.

If you use sample libraries, deal with recordings and that kind of stuff, you're going to want the biggest amount of ram you can get, ssd space to stream your libraries and the fastest cpu you can get to handle it all, basically, a laptop isn't ever going to cut it. Pic is a machine I specifically built for this purpose.

Never underestimate the power of MIDI.

Get a MIDI keyboard, a good tone generator like youtube.com/watch?v=vPf9jiE5jVE (or just use a soundfont) and a way to hook that up to your computer. Throw on some post-processing in whatever and you should be set.

Just keep saving your work and restart computer if it gets too slow or crash.

That's highly excessive. You can make music easily on a 10+ year old computer. Especially if you aren't using computer instruments.
