your post is a mess.

what do you exactly want to do?

I want more ports on my router

buy a fucking switch

this didn't explain what you want to do.

no go call an tech that get's paid for your stupid shit and don't bother to come to Sup Forums again for your stupidity.

also, google your problems before bothering people

>he only has 4 ports

...

Get a switch

Um... ok. Interestingly enough that isnt even a MAC on any of the interfaces on my switch

switch#sh int | i fa80
switch#

how is it so hard to understand, he wants more ports avaliable.

>my router has 4 ports.
>now do I have more ports avaliable?

Buy another router. Connect it to your router.

>Buy another router.
Why the fuck would he do that?
Buy a switch.

>I dont know what a layer 3 switch is

What does a layer 3 switch have to do with a router?

They're two different things

Get a layer 3 switch, not a router

>What does a layer 3 switch have to do with a router?
a layer 3 switch is a router

It acts as a router, but a "router" is different from a layer 3 switch, since it uses a microprocessor and has Wifi and shit, so the L3 switch is usually cheaper and faster

thank you for proving how retarded you are

cisco.com/c/en/us/about/press/internet-protocol-journal/back-issues/table-contents-19/switch-evolution.html
>For the purpose of this discussion, Layer 3 switches are superfast rout-ers that do Layer 3 forwarding in hardware. In this article, we will mainly discuss Layer 3 switching in the context of fast IP routing, with a brief discussion of the other areas of application.

>microprocessor
everything has a microprocessor you retard

>NiggersMatter
Return the switch Jamal

L3 switches use dedicated ASIC circuits, routers use the CPU to do all its heavy lifting, meaning a lot more latency

You're the retarded one, if you tell someone to get a router they're going to get a fucking Linksys not an L3 switch

Switches are expensive

Holy shit delete this

op is pure unadulterated cancer
the responses are cancer
sage goes in all fields

>Return the switch Jamal
You can get 3750Es on eBay for under $200.

> routers use the CPU to do all its heavy lifting
no, that is a absolutely retarded thing to say
cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/ios/12_2/switch/configuration/guide/fswtch_c/xcfcef.html

see

you can get 8 port unmanaged gbit switches for 10 bucks

An L3 switch is cheaper than a router.

An L3 switch IS a router you stupid fuck

You're all fucking stupid

When someone says router, they mean pic related
Call an L3 switch an L3 switch, not router

It's like saying rectangle when you're talking about a square

Forgot pic related

>Call an L3 switch an L3 switch, not router
Then why does my L3 switch support OSPF, RIP, BGP and other routing protocols?

That is a shit box which can only do NAT. GTFO with this consumershit.

>That is a shit box which can only do NAT. GTFO with this consumershit.
It's still a router, and is what 99% of people (especially neophytes like OP) will think of when you say "buy a router"

If you want him to get an L3 switch, FUCKING SAY GET AN L3 SWITCH

obtain some unmanaged switch. they interconnect devices only, but that might already be enough for your usecase.

Nobody's saying it isn't a router, but it's a specific subset of routers, so you should be specific instead of saying "get a router"

>a layer 3 switch is a router
but not all routers are dedicated layer 3 switches
ergo you should be specific

Just because you're wrong doesn't mean you have to get so mad user

I never said "get a router".

I never said they were.

I never said he should get a L3 switch.

>I never said they were.
Then why are you butting into the conversation responding to and ?

To point out that most of the people here are retards who think switches cant be routers.

I never responded to and I am

Buy monoprice 8 port switch, plug into router, done.

OP just get something like this:

Want more ports than that has? Buy a 2nd one and daisy chain (plug 1 into the box you have now, and then 2nd into the new switch). If you have a typical home setup, they'll all recognize each other and just magically work right out of the box.
