Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

what are the x220/x230 of latitudes?

X220/T530 says what up!

take off the letter and add e6 to the beginning.
that's the latitude equivalent.

Just ordered an X201, what am I in for?

Memes

Is the t430s worth an extra $50 over the t430?

whoa.jpg

Funny, I had the same issue July last year on my X220t too. Probably related to the insane stresses the hinge places on the chassis. If you play with it while disassembled, you'll see things flex. There may be a few loose screws inside
I took it apart and put it back together and the issue went away for a year. Same issue popped up but in all my incompetence, the spring loaded mPCIe slot meant that I bent the pins while reinserting the WLAN card so now I have to get an expresscard or USB one. Or try to pull them back into position. On the upside, the issue was once again resolved

An ok machine unless it comes pre smashed up to shit. Hopefully you got it for cheap though because X220s are pretty cheap these days

Depends on what you want. It's slimmer and has a guaranteed 1600*900 panel. But the battery life is shitter. The 6 cell is smaller than the normal 6 cell (48 Wh vs 60 Wh) and the only you can add more internal batteries is to get an Ultrabay battery which adds another 30 Wh)

first for t420

Didn't get an answer yesterday, why is the X130e shit?

It's a glorified netbook
Otherwise
>chiclet keyboard
>drop hinges
>lacking ThinkPad things like Thinklight
Of course, in practice it was intended to be idiot proof though since the target market was schoolkids

OK, thanks for the info.

At least I didn't pay for it.

Hey /tpg/,
I have a problem with my installation of windows on my x230's msata.
I want to make it my boot drive i can't set it as active in PE but i'm getting "the selected disk is not a fixed MBR disk".
So i'm stuck with booting from my old SSD that's dying.

What do i do so i can finally scrap the thing?

Also, i can't seem to boot from my msata on bios.

easybcd is useless

technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn336946.aspx

Have you read/tried that?

I have and i honestly dont want to wipe the drive and reinstall everything from scratch, currently trying this solution out

tenforums.com/drivers-hardware/35001-how-do-i-set-my-windows-10-drive-primary.html

Did it work?

open cmd
type the following
disk part
list disk
select disk (disk number)
clean

after that shut down, take out any secondary drives, install windows. then put back in any secondary drives.
Windows will install to any secondary drive 99/100 times.

No, i think i just bricked the thing. The screen is dead but my usb and power button light up

Ah, shit.
> “Okay, this is going to sound totally bizarre, but I want you to give this a try…” He then had me unplug the AC adapter and take out the battery. Then, you push the power button 10 times in a row at one second intervals. Next, you push and hold the power button for 30 seconds. Then you put the battery back in and push the power button… and she lives.

No luck. Should i just take this to a tech?
Holy fuck though.
I bought it for $160
spent $100 on an msata
and now i gotta prepare my anus for a repair bill that'd be more than both combined.

I can see the other side of the coin now. The ones who loathe the thinkpad. Guys who've had a similar experience to mine

>Thinkpad is my first computer that supports UEFI
>decide to do the whole Windows install with UEFI instead of traditional BIOS
>Motherboard is now essentially bricked because I can no longer access the BIOS settings, and the Windows UEFI menu is useless
I think this is my issue too

your computer never had a bios
it had legacy boot compatibility in a uefi system.
also boot into windows, open command prompt as admin, type "powercfg -h off" this turns off hibernation, therefore quickboot, which can prevent you from getting into the bios
or just hit restart which actually shuts down instead of hibernating it.

Has anyone here successfully removed a supervisor/BIOS password before?

Yeah, nevermind. My issue is a lot more simpler than that. It's most likely hardware related since though my led's light up, the screen is dead and no keyboard inputs are going through so nothing is going on behind the dead screen.

Fuck

Funny you mention that since its likely my poking around when i installed the msata that fucked the whole thing up. Though i've been busting open my acer countless times and haven't had any issues despite being more "poorly designed" than a thinkpad

Does the whole moving the blue block thing you can do with desktops work in laptops?

You have no backlight, no input?
I had that, it was the connection to the hall sensor.

Is there any reason why I should get a T430 instead of a T430s?

So I let me friend borrow my w520 for literally one day, and now it has a bunch if small but noticible surface scratches on the top cover. Any good way to buff these out? I don't know how normies do it.

T430 is cheaper than the T430s, and had longer battery life. Just because it might matter to you, the 1080p display swap works better on the T430s.

>using a partition manager will brick the machine

how in the holy mother of fuck.

Just backup, reformat and reinstall.

It depends on the system. I know on some you can short two pins but it's a PITA of a job

Thanks. Hadn't even thought about a display swap, but I'm going to look into it now.

I know that feeling so much man, I'm okay now because I bought a thinkpad and only I use it but before that

>be on vacation with family
>I am only one who brought a laptop
>its a shitty lenovo g series laptop
>let dad use it for 3 days straight
>trackpad left click now makes audible noise
>is misaligned and doesn't click right

ahhhhhhh

Nothink works right on those laptops anyways. Mine wont connect to wireless N networks now for some reason.

t420 here. just literally got this bitch with a clean install of windows 7. switched harddrives with my old toshiba. Went down hill and now i can't even get it to format the harddrive to start over again what do

its just been sitting at the start up repair screen for a hour...

try a different hdd? maybe it's just broken

ubuntu.com/download/desktop

no problem

We brick now

...

Come on man, your screen displays things.
Even if it is bricked it is far better then mine.

Mine just exploded in a fountain of sparks, sharp glass shrapnel and a lethal dosage ionizing radiation.

turn off network booting retard

Currently using a shitty T61, here.

Dumb question: Will an X220 be able to run regular Ubuntu? I've only had my T61 and another shitty HP laptop as portable computers, and they didn't work well with Ubuntu (not the fault of the OS, obviously). Used only desktop PCs before that.

kek you fucking retard that's not bricked.

You essentially don't have a boot record, so it's not seeing the HD as a boot device.

reformat, reinstall and shut the fuck up.

I've recently used X201 and X230 with Ubuntu 16.04 and they worked with no problems.

Hi /tpg/. I have a few questions.

So I currently use a T400 with the advanced dock and a R7 240. As a portable laptop it's pretty good but as a desktop replacement it can be a little underwhelming. I run a P9500 in my laptop but it still bottlenecks some things.

So my question is: would upgrading the CPU to a T9900 make a significant difference in terms of performance in games and such?

My other question is is there any way to stuff a quadcore in the T400 or W500? Cooling shouldn't be much of a problem because when my laptop is docked the CPU runs at 48C stable under full load currently.

I noticed the W500 can be used with the dock as well so if I can get a quad core in it I could use it docked and as a desktop replacement when I need to and get a X200s for portability. I do actually own a full desktop for when I'm at home.

I use the x201 (on it right now)

Ubuntu runs fine beyond a bluetooth feature not working.

the X220 is the X201 souped up, so yes is the answer. Runs bloody good on my x201

I'm currently using Debian testing with KDE 5 on my X220 and it runs like a charm.
Very responsive and snappy, don't even notice any difference between my Desktop (i7-3770k) and the X220 (i7-2620M) in normal tasks.

THE GOOKS HAVE DONE IT AGAIN

...

...

...

>Windows 10

What am I looking at user? Bigger screen, smaller bezel?

How can i reformat and reinstall when the screen is dead, like no backlight and no input is going through? It heats up, the various LEDs and my usb lights up but its essentially bricked

Holy shit. Holy shit. Answered my own question. NEW screen mod. xps 13 1080 screen on a moded top case. International availability. TAKE MY MONEY

Excuse the leddit link

reddit.com/r/thinkpad/comments/4wf7uc/51nbs_mods_internationally_available_x62_x330_fhd/

Are Lenovos extended warranties worth it? It's like $290 for 4year onsite/accidental(same price as 3 year). Was going to get an oled x1 yoga.

Just got an almost new T440 for 325€/$360 but it has a broken USB port, did I fuck up? I guess I won't be needing it anyway.

How have you killed the screen using a partition manager?

Darwin award for this guy

It blows my mind that there are retards on Ebay trying to sell thinkpads with no RAM, hard drives or batteries for 100 bucks, or shit without charging cords, chunks missing from the bottom, etc.

Are there people really stupid enough to buy into it?

Essentially.
I made the new drive my partition, went to bios, saw that my boot drives were looping but selected the drive i wanted anyway.
It went dark but the backlight was still there.
It was like that for several minutes so i powered it off through the button.
That's how i got to the current situation

if i had the money i would buy one

How's this?

notebookcheck.net/Review-Lenovo-ThinkPad-W520-Notebook.53220.0.html

I'm getting a version with i7 3.5 GHz and I'm also going to put a Samsung ssd inside.

What do you guys think?

Well I've bought a few units like that.

As it stands I've got a unit on its way missing hard drive, caddy, battery and charger.

The upside is:

A. It was really cheap
B. I have all the stuff for it.

I have a spare caddy, SSD, and charger. I won't be investing much money into it, and I'm getting a damn good machine for it. I'd never pay $100 for them though.

where can I buy?

Is the x220 too small to program comfortably? My last laptop was a fuckhuge toshiba

see

Now here's a mod I'd like to buy. Too bad it's going to be either too hard to order, too hard to install or too expensive for me.

Is it worth it to buy an x300 if given the opportunity? Friend of mine selling one for £110 with the following specs:
Intel Core 2 Duo L7100
2GB RAM
64GB SSD
13.3" TFT 1440x900 display

Finally started using my T400 again. I'm loving i3. First time I've really used it and I'm working so much faster now.

I just bought a new Thinkpad T420 after a much needed upgrade from the T60. It has one 4GB stick of RAM. If I'm on a budget, is it a wise idea to add one more stick of 8GB and deal with single channel, or should I just add one stick of 4GB and take advantage of dual channel RAM?

no

I bought mine with 4 and upgraded to 8. 4 was plenty for me before though, but I'm running Mint.

Broken X220T fag again.
So since the i7 is a huge battery drain/heat lamp, if I replace the mobo should I go with the i5?
Also should I go for it or let the thing rip in pepperoni?

I feel like a better use of your money might be putting an SSD in

just got a x220,
i7 2.8 ghz
8 gb ram
240 gb ssd for £217
is it a decent buy?

i've got a 128gb ssd in it

So uh, what do i do now guys?
Take it to a tech?
Buy another used one and try my luck with another ticking timebomb mobo?
Is this just how buying used goes?
You have it working for 2 weeks and then it goes lemon?

This is the first time i've had a laptop die on me like this and i'm staring into the abyss of the black screen of death.

it may sound stupid, but have you tried an external screen?
mu t420 had no backlight and no input overnight and as I said earlier, it was the sensor detecting that the lid was closed.

X61 tablet for £40, yea or nay?

Intel Core 2 Duo L7500
1024 x 768 display
120GB SSD

nice one lad, crank that ram up them

Tried it just now. Nothing. No signal.

have you tried taking the battery out, unplugging the ac adapter and pressing the power button for ~30 secs?

Yeah and 2 minutes even

I bought it.

I have a T420. Obviously, a T430/T530 would be more powerful, but does /tpg/ recommend it for daily use?

What is the consensus on using X-series Thinkpads for desktop replacements?

A 420 has more than enough power for all tasks.
The only real advantage of a T430 would be USB 3.0 in my opinion.

Yes. T430 is much more powerful, and it can actually handle both overclocked nvidia GPU AND 45W quad core+HT CPU
Don't hestitate, just upgrade to T430 Master Race.

no input?

>Shit tier keyboard
No thanks

does anyone have a link to the firewire drivers for the w520?

>uses T430
>claims it's awesome
>keeps it closed and uses an external keyboard

Really makes me think.

>all those specs
>still need an external monitor because the internal panel is so shamefully terrible
kek

>Chrome
>Windows 10
Opinion discarded.
