So what do you think about this recent trend where every kid should learn to code?
So what do you think about this recent trend where every kid should learn to code?
Programming is no doubt a useful skill. It enables forms of expression and knowledge gathering that are not possible with only human languages and pure mathematics. Not every kid needs to become a C hacker, but it would be great for lots of people to have the skills (or at least not be afraid to learn how) to build their own tools.
It also has the added benefit of bringing down labour costs in the software industry.
dumb fucks
They should learn how to suck dick.
I hope nobody learns to code so that I can get paid more.
If it were a country like Finland or Japan doing it it'd make sense.
USA, on the other hand, can barely teach the 4 basic subjects at an adequate level.
Maths is already taught to literally every kid and they still suck at it. It doesn't matter.
Kid will learn hello world, pass the exam after 10 tries and then move on.
Plus if we're only going to teach the kids how to write code and not actually teach them anything about how the computer actually works, they'll grow up to be pajeet-tier codemonkeys that write HTML code and post obnoxious tweets about how empowered they are.
bad trend
you don't want everyone to know how to program. you know them to know how to solve algorithmic and logic problems. teaching kids how to program is tangential to what should be being done, but it's better for companies because they get a cheaper workforce.
I see classrooms full of failures teaching methods that were outdated when written.
Like pretty much all schooling.
>CS grad afraid he's going to get outsourced
Pathetic.
Just like how everyone is a great mathematician now after they have been taught math in schools
I'm not afraid because I'm above the average in my field (or, at the very least, I get better grades and have a better work ethic than most). Teaching people how to solve algorithmic/logic problems would be more threatening to me, but that's what I advocate anyway, because it's the skill that people actually need.
Shouldn't they first be taught how not to make a fallacious argument or basic statistics?
Why would it make sense in Finland? Most people here illiterate cavemen
t. Finn
To depreciate the trade and oversaturate the field with incompetent trash that gets indoctrinated in boot camps to do a horrible monkey's job good enough for things not to fall apart, once that's in place cuckerberk and his kike friends now don't have to pay a lot of money to a lot of competent programmers, they can layoff thousands of programmers and hire new fresh out of boot camp kode with klossie femanazi garbage who will work for food, thus saving cuckerberk and other kikes in the field millions of shekels.
programmers to be the new burger flippers
>best schooling methods in the world
>"most people here are illiterate cavemen"
Doesn't compute.
mathematics isn't as interesting to the average kid as making a website/app/game, plus the barrier of entry is lower for programming
...
>implying they won't literally be flip-
oh right, robots
Most of these teach kids to code curriculums end at about fizzbuzz level
Then again that's better than 50% of CS majors
>schooling methods
>no grades
baka desu senpai famalam pie fampie
The schooling system is only succesful because it's completely free thanks to high taxes. Everyone gets the same education which would result in decent PISA scores in any first world country. It has nothing to do with intelligence, just socialism
USA is well on its way to being a majority minority country, those Massachusetts schools aren't long for this world.
Literally fucking pointless since by the time a lot of those kids grow up, AI will be the only one doing any programming.
I don't think that every kid should learn to code, but I do think that every kid should take a computer applications class. People should be able to do basic troubleshooting on their computer and remove malware on their own instead of having geeksquad rape their wallet.
Sweden's PISA score is fucking shit though, as is Denmark's and Norway's
Most computer applications classes are just MS word tutorials.
Why not teach LaTeX?
doesn't really matter, there's a finite number of people who can into code
no matter how hard they try, forcing pajeets and womyn in won't make a huge influx of real programmers
The ones that have an actual textbook instead of a MS Office book don't
>tfw my country's PISA ranking is below 50
I'm tired of living among braindead people.
What externally looks like a noble attempt is just actually greed. Yes let's have even the president to encourage everyone to learn programming! Then we shall flood the market with all kinds of ''''''''programmers'''''''' and thus not needing to pay them as much
What CS and IT really consist of are genuine nerds, some eccentric normies that are good at it, people wanting to make video games, old people who had to learn it and the occasional girl that actually cares about it and isn't just nominally OK at it and just there for the notoriety of being a girl who knows how to use a computer. We don't need to expand this to include the worst types of people too.
They have more niggers
Not many high schools aare going to use SICP
They should though
>they'll grow up to be pajeet-tier codemonkeys that write HTML code
But that's the whole point of this :^)
It's not like a lot of people would be interested in programming. Unless it's mandatory, this wouldn't be a problem.
>pic
Just like everyone knows maths and physics because they learned it on school. Chances are that they will still be incompetent.
Company owners and CEOs like Zuckerjew need the market to have a surplus of programmers so they don't have to spend as much on wages. That is literally all there is to it.
>The programmers of today will be the wizards of tomorrow. --Gabe Newell
What did he mean by this?
That programmers are cucks who will still be virgins on their 30th birthday.
> He seriously wants to trade in his rad wizard skills for 5 seconds of joy
The true cuck is you
Should teach kids the basics of shitposting safely online instead. Would kill Microsoft and all antivirus companies.
>even janitors will know how to program
So you're telling me these faggy snowflakes with their tweeter cliques and chai tea won't have reason to have false sense of self-worth?
Where do I donate?
I believe students should learn programming, at least the principles of it, and physics alongside their maths. These two subjects force you to examine the hell out of what kind of problem you have and the necessary tools to solve it.
Teaching kids anything in school is like throwing jelly against the wall. Some of it sticks, but most won't.
Most kids will never be programmers beyond Hello World. Most kids will never writer their own scripts to automate stuff on their devices.
Teach kids about computing and how stuff works under the hood and some basic programming, great. Expect them all to become able programmers, and you're going to be very disappointed.
(((benefit)))
>So what do you think about this recent trend where every kid should learn to code?
If it produces competent programmers at home so we no longer have to deal with foreign Pajeets screwing up everything, I'm all for it.
Only if you're a H1-B visa loving, outsourcing fucktard """"manager"""" would you oppose this.
The ones driving it are obviously the big "silicon valley" companies, who need more manpower, but it is a very useful skill for the average normie too in today's society, where you have a computer in your pocket, not to mention that it could increase linux market share, since it would make normos less afraid off the terminal, and since most programming classes use linux.
Underrated.
>The ones driving it are obviously the big "silicon valley" companies, who need more manpower,
See The big silicon valley companies would rather hire cheap indians than hire locally, because indians would work for less than minimum wage.
Waste of time and money to be fucking honest.
I'm all for the open availability of technology education, but it shouldn't be forced down someone's throat. I mean really, look at all the people who take science classes in high school, or even mathematics. Over half of them have no clue what's going on, and even less of them actually enjoy the subject.
On the other hand, optional classes always have more students that enjoy them and have a higher understanding of the material.
Keep CS optional. The current curriculum is not bad, it doesn't need any changing.
>make programming a basic skill
>at best it'll make people hate computers that much more because not everyone is a bright crayon when it comes to computers as is
>at worst it'll bring down programmer salaries and wages cause it's a widespread skill
fuck that shit, all kids shouldnt fucking have to learn programming, it is a damn choice, THE FYOOTURE is looking pretty fucking grim, this is what cuckerburg wants, he's a fucking jew for fucks sake
We can only hope for a world where you need to be able to program to run a computer, that would solve a lot of the usa's problems.
I'm down with it
In a year we'll be teaching how to recognize a kike and how to bake him properly
No. They're not saying anything about having more primitive computers, they're talking about producing more faggots who think they know shit cause they were able to write a basic HTML page with some JS functionality.
I’m starting to think it’s a horrible idea. Turns out everything that’s not a sekrit club is overrun by entitled bitches and memeing normies.
The nerd culture has already been fucked over already user.
Geeks infiltrating popular culture was a fucking mistake.
Transparent attempt to pay employees less.
I'm okay with a mandatory introduction to computation class to understand how computers work and think. Then maybe a logic course. Actual programming like "Java II" or "intro to Python," should be offered as optional for kids actually interested in computer science.
I agree with Torvalds stance on this:
We shouldn't be forcing kids to learn how to program. Not all of them want it or will use it. It's more important to give opportunities to the kids who want to learn.
In highschool we didn't have the option to take programming classes which was a shame since it was all I did at home besides play games.
Programming is a skill, just like carpentry. We don't teach kids carpentry even though it's used to build our houses and buildings because not all kids will become carpenters. Most of them really don't give a fuck.
We should teach kids the basics of how a computer works and maybe a brief intro to a language like python but that's about it.
Makes me glad I went the DBA + BI route instead of the straight programming route.
>We don't teach kids carpentry
But we do for fuck's sake. Every country has woodwork in it's curriculum.
No.
Computers and the internet in general should have stayed a hobbyist field. The internet and software were so much better when the only people using them were basement dwellers that actually loved it.
Normalfrogs should be locked out of the internet entirely, not taking Sup Forums's jobs.
fucking hell people are stupid.
regularpepes only want to do what's easy and looks shiny.
Getting these drooling braindead morons into CS/SE in the first place is why we have bloated js websites that need a fucking xeon to animate.
Honestly coding is a specialist skill and as such anything beyond rudiments is pointless to teach to the masses. Its pointless because only so many coders are needed in the economy and only the best will be chosen to fill that number.
I suppose you could make a case to say we ought be teaching the rudiments of coding. Though, as others have said, given how atrociously this goes for the other subjects we teach everyone, I'm not sure it would be worth it. Our education systems are fucking atrocious, and any standing our academically inclined achieve comes from a combination of personal interest, self study, and natural ability primarily.
>Every country has woodwork in it's curriculum.
lolwut
This is simply not true.
I don't know anyone who had compulsory woodworking in school.
They simply cannot. Some of them can barely read/write thanks to tablets.
Touchscreens are keeping them stupid, good for business.
literally (and figuratively)retarded
Not true. Engineering/shop (woodwork) in high school is optional.
In my middle school, it was a randomly assigned class, it lasted 9 weeks and you could switch out if you didn't like it the first week.
considering that most kids in US public schools nowadays are non-white, i can't see this going far, or anywhere at all.
I agree with this user 100%
Western countries that don't have woodwork in high school
>USA
Western countries that do have them
>everybody else
The US is fucked because your gubment and state gubments keep cutting funds, give college stipends to nignogs that are good at throwing balls in hoops, and teaching intelligent design in science classes.
I live in GA, in one of the whitest suburbs, I can count on my hands the number of white kids that knew anything about computers in my high school.
Go straight back to Sup Forums, you race bait nigger.
Least until the next generation, where the people who would be earning money to buy their kids dumb facebook toys can't earn more than minimum wage
But who cares about the future when there's money to be made now?
enriched curriculum semi-private high school in Canada here
"woodshop" was literally 2 periods of our science class one year and that's it.
literally cancer
>benefit
Oh yes, throw another profession down into the kikes' endless pit of disposable oversaturated labor markets.
Wage slavery isn't uniformly enforced QUITE yet!
I'm sorry you don't live in a real country
That won't be a problem, ever seen poor people who can barely afford to eat with phone contracts that are putting them in a mountain of debt for no practical reason and tvs bigger than yours? I see it all the time, most of the time even their kids have iphones and such.
cool anecdote, nigger. meanwhile in my majority white school anyone that wasn't trailer trash liked computers, and except for the women, most people assembled their own desktop.
then again since you're in GA you all probably lived in trailers, so it's not surprising.
I built an Adirondack chair in high school. USA
>cool anecdote
Right back at ya, nigger.
Expect many more neets who believe they can make it through coding from their basement.
If only she wasn't so hideous.
I'm talking about a world where they're so unable to pay off debt that it stops being profitable to give credit to people like that.
Well maybe, I mean they'll still fucking try, getting $2000 in debt for a $800 iPhone or whatever
coding is going to be like cooking, car maintenance, etc. a skill that's potentially valuable to absolutely anybody.
but to expect everybody to learn it is a not reasonable.
Yep. She's ugly as fuck. Smelly too
> bit flippers
And a pervert!
Without a foundation in math and English it doesn't make sense to teach kids a programming language.
why not go full nazi on math?
someone good at math writes better software than someone who isn't, and lots of people do not want to work as a programmer, and being good at math makes everything in your life easier
t. Drunk autistic mathemagician ;^))
well if you decide to stop being a faggot then you can have a look at student's performance by race and you'll see that blacks are bottom of the barrel and hispanics not far behind. doesn't take a genius that any sort of programming class would be a waste for them.
one thing to introduce those classes in top schools with lots of asian and white students, and another to introduce them in all black and brown shithole schools.
>we're not dumb it's just the niggers
>we're not fat it's just the mexicans
>we're not violent it's just the niggers and mexicans
>we're not stupid it's just the californians
>we're not racist it's just the texans
>we're not jewish it's just the new yorkers
>we're not inbred it's just the alabamans
Americans are so pathetic. They're a part of your country. It's one country, you can't cherry-pick. If you don't want them you should kick them out.
you realized that you took your first two points and just repeated them 2.5 times, right?
This for the same reason every who was forced to take a wood shop in school isn't a carpenter.
People misunderstand the thought behind the movement. They expect people do know basic scripting, computer literacy and maybe visual basic or similar. Not to leave high school with a full education on software engineering. Enough to operate powerful tools on the computer and maybe use their own solutions to solve their problems, just like rebuilding a leg for a table, building a shelf or changing a tire.
I think it's okay. Mathematicians don't get paid less because literally every school kids learns some mathematics. The truth of the matter is, a vast majority of people fucking suck at math.
Programming is basically no different, it's logic, and a lot of people aren't equipped to learn it. It also has the added benefit of making a lot of people hate programming since it's mandatory, instead of it being this illustrious subject that dumb shits flock to. They filter out earlier.
The programmers that do really like the subject get to start earlier and become better programmers.
What I feel is that people should stop glorifying programming. It's hypocritical to push programming this hard and completely neglect mathematics, when the building blocks behind these subjects are the same.
we are trying
but the corrupt political systems we have now is taking awhile to remove
>writes out paragraphs upon paragraphs about how white skin is inherently better than all other skin on a nameless chinese cartoon discussion forum
How bad do your parents have to fuck up for you to end up like this? I mean, I don't give two shits about your views, I just want to know what went wrong. This is just pathetic son, at least find yourself a good town square to soapbox in.
>inb4 le ad hominem
>u can't answer my arguments so u just dodge them loool ecks dee!
Fuck off and answer my question.
Not in k-8, user
>this is what flyover states believe
So you're telling me you're going to replace a corrupt political system with a system filled with saints?
Good luck wit that goober.
