If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following: 0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine using VirtualBox or other software made for this puporse for safety purposes. 1) Use the Live ISO (if your distribution of choice has one) to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything, that way, you can get to experience the GNU/Linux operating system without installing it. 2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS, this is recommended if you want to know more about the GNU/Linux operating system. 3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.
After looking for window-managers/desktop-environments I started using xfce with the i3 window manager, but, xfce-panel doesn't interface as well with i3 as i'd hope, and would now like to go to standard i3
However I like the "just werks" aspect of whiskermenu and would like to know if there is any application launcher that interfaces with i3bar/whatever-else-is-compatible-with-i3 well, and has a customizable icon
Any suggestions? I'm still relatively new to loonix, and was drawn to it by it's modulability

First for try Devuan.

So the argument is standardization. Why not runit?
Gabriel Garcia
nah.

The argument is "because". When you have a corporation pushing for one system and one system only you have to use the gray matter between your ears.
Ethan Flores
> why not runit
systemd got here first and has Red Hat backing it. Having never used runit I can't say which is better.
There's also the fact that systemd is more than just an init system - its a software suite composing an entire low-level system.
Matthew Perez
daily reminder:
Kayden Gutierrez
Low-level standartization is great, but the way it is implemented now is a cancer in itself, because systemd will lead to the unitary ecosystem ran by corporations, with appstores, late security fixes, NSA backdoors and all the shit we can see in Windows or OSX, only even shittier and with greater choice of DEs. They should have standartized APIs and keep any "standart" software, as long as it is absolutely necessary, as slim as possible. Instead they are basically writing Windows on top of Linux kernel and telling everyone it's good.
Cameron Rodriguez
>systemd got here first not true and you know it
Charles Anderson
Silly question, but can you force screenfetch to show GPU details also? Mine doesn't display GPU details at all in Ubuntu, and in Arch it only showed one, though I have two (laptop - one's the shitty integrated Intel graphics, and the others is Nvidia). I'm using proprietary drivers from both Intel and Nvidia, yet screenfetch doesn't show any of them
Jaxon Reed
If I choose to install a WM over an entire DE what other software should I install that comprises a DE?
Blake King
Your screenfetch is possibly outdated. Use screenfetch-dev from github. Also read the manpage: man screenfetch.
Chase Young
Would you leave GNU/Linux if it became mainstream like Windows? Would developers have to start pandering to the mainstream crowd for you to leave, or would the "normie" infiltration/destruction of the community be enough to drive you out?
Isaiah Hughes
Last time I checked Systemd was still FOSS. It's true that it will further consolidate Red Hat's dominion over the Linix world, but I sincerely doubt that things will get as bad as Microsoft/Apple. Late security fixes are never an issue with FOSS, and the NSA has a substantially harder time backdooring it. I also have yet to see any evidemce that Red Hat works with the NSA (Selinux having originally been developed by them is not evidence; it too is FOSS and has been audited many times).
So while some of your concerns are valid, I think that the open-spurce ecosystem will handle it.
Jayden Ross
Oh thanks, I'll get right to that when I'm finished attempting to set up xSwipe; I just ran apt-get install screenfetch and though the latest version would be in the repository, but I'll check out the github
Isaiah Wright
There isn't really anything to leave it for at this point. It's more possible for Linux itself to split to normalfag part and "true" part, with them becoming largely incompartible..
Leo Martin
I use it for freedom and because it's simply better. I don't care about market share. Mainstream may add more support for drivers and games, which isn't a bad idea tho, but it will also breed bad distros (retard friendly instead of user friendly).
Logan King
I think widespread adoption would be a very good thing because it would drive corporations to take an interest in FOSS and make hardware support better.
There will always be minimal, anti-normie distributions for people who like old-school (shit, Slackware is still going strong after 22 years).
Angel Robinson
>the NSA has a substantially harder time backdooring it True, but the spaghetti code makes it hard to find backdoors too, FOSS or not
Yes, it may not be as bad as I think, but still there's no real reason to like systemd. Especially considering a number of retarded decisions made through its development, turning it into a bloblike bloatware. I already sperged about binary logs in one of the previous threads, afair.
Jace Long
>systemd will lead to the unitary ecosystem ran by corporations, with appstores, late security fixes, NSA backdoors
Red Hat already employs developers in critical Linux projects with MUCH less diverse contributions than systemd. Why is systemd suddenly different and bad?
The Linux kernel itself is about 85% run by corporate developers, and certainly practically everybody in a decision-making (apart from Torvalds) works for some company or other, and Torvalds trusts these people hugely.
Torvalds is actually pretty much triggered by systemd stuff like binary logs.
Joseph Morris
According to what?
That doesn't even matter anyway, it's completely tangential to my point.
Tyler Hall
What Linux projects are as critical as systemd? Corporation having control over the only init (and not only init) system is the corporation holding the whole linux world by its balls.

Here's a bash function: magick_thumbnail() { thumbnail="$1" payload="$2" output="${3:-magick.png}"
You got that from some NTFS-infested drive, didn't you?
Jaxon Martinez
Two questions: One relevant, one not relevant.
1. How do I make pictures be different pictures when clicked on in Sup Forums? (like OP's image)
2. Has anyone here managed to get a custom kernel to run Fedora? I used to be able to use Grsecurity then one day it started throwing kernel panics, even if I just downloaded the kernel, loaded the system's configuration, and compiled that with no changes.
Will post more good stuff in exchange for answers.
If that's your concern you couldn't use most distros
Samuel Edwards
What's the currently best tool to compress PNGs?
Henry Mitchell
>Thirdly, while they import packages from Ubuntu or Debian, they hi-jack package and binary names by re-using existing names. For example, they called their fork of gdm2 "mdm" which supposedly means "Mint Display Manager". However, the problem is that there already is a package "mdm" in Debian which are "Utilities for single-host parallel shell scripting". Thus, on Mint, the original "mdm" package cannot be installed.
That's my main problem, it particularly triggers my autism
I would suggest Linux Lite, however I don't know if it does the same

Is there any "better" programming languages for linux?

Why do these pictures always only work in the browser, but in no image viewer I've tested so far?

Fedora KDE spin over here.
I've used their LXDE, Cinnamon, MATE, and GNOME spins. The GNOME one runs the best - I'd just install that and install KDE manually.

I just used the netinstall, personally.

Fuck you guys.

If this is a complete asspull someone correct me please, but I think it works through color correction metadata that gets interpreted by your browser but most image viewer ignore it?

Do I need to create mount directories for every partition?
I have 4 partitions, one for grub, boot, swap, and root. I'm thinking I only need to actually mount boot and root but I'm not sure. If I need to mount grub and swap, what should the directory names be called?
Hunter Morris
The magic is the gamma attribute.
Sup Forums converts pictures to jpg thumbnails (without gamma), therefore you see RMS instead of Linus. If your image viewer supports changing the gamma, you can view both pictures (git related shows mpv).
Reminder for people who compress their PNGs: If you compress them, make sure NOT to strip this attribute (which is mostly stripped by default) or the magic is gone.
Daniel Adams
Thanks.
mpv was one of the "image viewers" I tested, did not think of changing the gamma.

>tfw forced to use Arch because muh bleeding edge and systemd is the future
Does nothing really compete with Arch? Why isn't Debian Sid more popular than it is?
never tried it but at least a sort of community and support exists
Juan Phillips
I hear a lot of good things about Void lately. Maybe it will get more popular, who knows.
Justin Myers
I know I don't have to use systemd right now but as time goes on systemd is going to become more and more prevalent. Being a rebel will be a PITA as time goes on and I don't want to deal with that. I might as well learn systemd and get used to it.
Jackson Nguyen
>Why isn't Debian Sid more popular Because there's no debian-sid.iso
Jeremiah Lopez
Yeah, I might switch to it in the future depending on how it and the Linux ecosystem develop.
Connor Nelson

/r/equesting that image of richard stallman photoshopped in front of a computer with this face

Jordan Ortiz
Please avoid using the term “photoshop” as a verb, meaning any kind of photo manipulation or image editing in general. Photoshop is just the name of one particular image editing program, which should be avoided since it is proprietary. There are plenty of free programs for editing images, such as the GIMP.
Jeremiah Richardson

How is this shit possible? How did Win 7 miss such a basic thing? Why are Samsung offering up broken / non-installing drivers? Why did mint "just werk?"

A day or two ago I was lurking this thread and somebody posted a terminal command that brought all the files within a folder up the same directory as the folder. Can somebody tell me where I can find the archive, or if the person that posted the command, can repost it? It was for .jar files.

What's a screenshot application that allows me to set hotkeys and automatically upload to Imgur? I used SnippingTool++ on Windows. The only thing I found for linux was the XFCE screenshot, which I installed, but then it installed XFCE Panel and XFCE Util that adds a bunch of useless shit that I don't need.
Are there any screenshot tools where I could quickly upload to an image site with hotkeys for full screen, active window, and optionally draw a selection box.

I don't play any Windows games on my Manjaro laptop to be honest so can't help you. I only play Minecraft with my niece and CS:GO on Steam, and both perform better than on my Windows 10 gaming desktop.

Start playing Dwarf Fortress. It works fine on leenuks and will consume your desire to play anything else.
