If I gave you ten of these to do with as you wanted, except sell them, what would you do?

If I gave you ten of these to do with as you wanted, except sell them, what would you do?

If you don't know what it is, it is the 15TB drive from samsung

Begin downloading all of the porn on the internet, eventually I would have all of it and would be the leader of the free world.

My name, the Pornasaurus Rex

RAID them all together, post benchmarks, then give them to friends

this desu

Download the internet.

Defrag them

what are you a communist?

Throw them in my NAS and then forget about them probably, I can't even fill the 6TB I have

Automate downloading music torrents of artists i like in four of those, get rare music from tapes and vinyl records, folkloric music from my country (peruvianfag). All in FLAC
Seed.
Use the remaining six to do the same with movies i like.

Put them in a RAID server that can only be connected to by dial-up modem.

Arrange them on a neat stack

Put them in a NAS, colocate it, and sell cloud space

download a single bloatgirls release

I'd do a whole shitton of striping.

I have no use for that amount of storage though.

god damn giant dictionary

gg WPA2

wait... brute force as good at that point

hentai

Stack them in my desk

...

I could use these in my NAS. I could fill them, too.

what is your NAS?

Bury them at some train tracks

It's a 6-bay Windows Server 2012 R2 box of my own design. Currently plays host to ~21TB, and it's feeling a little tight lately.

What HBA/RAID card do you have

I don't do RAID, because I can't afford it. I have 18TB of *actual data* in JBOD, across 6 disks. Not only would I have to pay for another 20TB worth of HDDs, but I'd also have to pull 12 SATA ports out of my ass somehow. It's outrageously expensive.

Now, if I had six free 15TB SSDs on my hands, admittedly, I might be able to make something happen.

>implying single card with no redundancy

no wait... its a windows user... thats exactly what he did

neutered perc5 then

install gentoo many, many times.

>neutered perc5
How do you have 6 disks connected to a 4 port controller? Do you actually have a chassis with a 12gig expander?

I didn't go JBOD because I'm retarded, I went JBOD because it would have been hilariously expensive.

I'd need a new case, because my current case only supports 6 drives. I'd need a new motherboard (or several expensive SATA cards) to get 12 SATA ports. I'd probably need a new PSU to deal with all the extra SATA connections. If we're being honest, I'd probably want to do this right with ZFS, which would mean having 32-64GB of RAM, which, in addition to costing a fortune in and of itself, would also push up the cost of my new motherboard. I'd need a new processor, to go with the new motherboard. And then, after all that horse shit, I'd need the drives themselves. 20TB worth of drives, which comes to about $1000 *minimum*.

I'd love to do it, but it just isn't realistic.

You must not be addicted to porn then. I am always running out of space. I hate doing this. I'll never watch half this shit.

Easy. Make a RAIDz2 or RAIDz3 array and start hoarding everything. I would download all of madokami, just about most roms out there, academic books galore, all the anime I could ever watch, and maybe even the panda while I'm at it.

3D porn is so bad though. 2D is where it's at, eromanga is some of the best shit out there.

hah not even... typical. never surprises me the number of people using licenses they can't afford to store files they don't own

and have no copies of. back it up or dicount it, one copy is zero copies quickly

not like a 20tb archive takes long to build

You guys have issues. I have one 120gb ssd that's never been 20% full.

>because it would have been hilariously expensive.
I know the pain.

>I'd need a new motherboard
So you aren't . Anyways you'd need more than that, they are 12gig SAS disks. You can't use them with SATA.

> 32-64GB of RAM, which, in addition to costing a fortune in
RAM is cheap and can be had for a few hundred.

Shit nigga.

>perc5
have you ever used a perc? they do 8 m8

Move production, dev, and testing from hybrid storage to full SSD, because I already have the SAS 12G controller.

porn, torrents, data storage for data analysis, can't think of much else.

I don't even know what to do with 1 TB.
Hell, I've still got 150GB free on my 250GB home partition.

I have the 28 channel Areca. Jewgling it only showed 4 port models.

>implying I paid for Windows Server

Why are you assuming I'm retarded? I'm just broke ass motherfucker with a *lot* of data.

>RAM is cheap and can be had for a few hundred.

The entire build I'm using, sans hard drives, was $400.

Move to Detroit, then get insurance.

QQ i don't understand SAS or SAS controllers

are you even literate? have you ever opened up a product manual? lurk more

i don't normally call people morons but....

>i was implying you stole it
>and you're poor
>and stupid

and things panned out to show i was correct, how about that

Use storage spaces. That's exactly what it's for. Set redundancy on the individual volume, and be done.

I have a SAS RAID card retard. As I said, jewgling the perc5 showed a 4 port model for sale on amazon

i use lvm yo

im sure it's the same but just with a ridiculous kernel

>im sure it's the same
It's not. The *nix equivalent of Storage Spaces is ZFS.

O HOHOHO PORTS = DEVICES

my sas card in my seedbox has 4 ports and supports 16 devices, are you capable of thinking even?

Raid 1 all of them

>It's not. The *nix equivalent of Storage Spaces is ZFS.
Not exactly, you cant have both Dedup and ReFS at the same time, as Dedup even in Server 2016 requires NTFS.

nice, i'll look into it maybe, i only admin a single winders cluster for some fax stuff but it's always good to know more about it, ty ty

Surveillance

Use 9 of them to build a safe house from the lucky 1 drive that I'll probably only need

How retarded are you? I posted a pic of my Areca 1883ix-24, it has a on board expander.

>i only admin a single winders cluster
How cute. (joking)

I run a pair of Dell T620's at home, and a... significantly larger environment at work.

How am I stupid, rather than just poor? If I can't afford 40TB of raw space, 32 GB of RAM, and RAID cards, I'm just poor. I'm doing the best I can with what I currently possess, which actually takes a lot more ingenuity than building your $10,000 dream machine on Newegg with your dad's credit card.

I have 18 TB of data across 20 TB worth of disk space. How am I going to achieve redundancy without buying more drives, and requiring more SATA ports, and therefore other new hardware?

>not RAID 0

10 of those would only hold around 3000 uncompressed blurays which isn't a lot really. My libraries rent blurays for free so ripping all of them would be a start.

4/8k video would fill that pretty quick same with high speed camera footage.

HD Survelence footage needs a lot of space

I would put all of them in a raid 1.

> Set 1 - main windows
> Set 2 - all my music
> Set 3 - all my tv shows
> Set 4 - pt. 1 of 1080p/4k movie collection
> Set 5 - pt. 2 of movie collection

>I have 18 TB of data across 20 TB worth of disk space. How am I going to achieve redundancy without buying more drives, and requiring more SATA ports, and therefore other new hardware?
You may have to do some shuffling, yes, but as for hardware it's just JBOD. Drives get added to a pool, and when you create a volume you choose what level of redundancy you want in that volume. At home, out of the a pool of 4 500GB SSD's and 12 3TB drives, I have RAID 0, RAID 6, RAID 10, and RAID 50 volumes. It's all software defined.

we run like half of a thousand linux boxes for various phone appliances and only recently started using configuration management after i threatened to fistfight fucking all the management

my life is shit

windows is far worse

at least most of my life makes sense

fuck you dll and fuck you registry. and fuck you windows log formats and all of your various retarded databases

How do I achieve redundancy for 18 TB of data with 1 TB of free space?

just remembered windows is limited to 2tb so I would dual boot

Windows for 2tb
Fedora for 13tb

1000 skydrive accounts and a phat pipe

>configuration management after i threatened to fistfight fucking all the management
Now that's winning...

I essentially manage Office 365 and Azure like infrastructure, so I'm in a Windows world. I'm currently writing automation modules for SCCM in PowerShell.

It's not to most. Just a meme.

>windows is limited to 2tb so I would dual boot
What is GPT and uEFI??

Don't get obsessed and addicted to porn collecting. The ride never ends.

>just remembered windows is limited to 2tb so I would dual boot
What? I had 4TB drives running fine on them back when I ran it.

Like I said, you'll have to do some shuffling, but if you can start with a single drive in the pool, create the volume, transfer to it so you can add another drive, extend volume, add drive, enable redundancy, etc, it can be done. I don't have it handy or I'd throw up a pastebin of a script I wrote to do it.

That's not what I'm asking. What I'm asking is, how does there come to be extra copies of the data when there's nine times more data than there is free space?

Thanks user, been a while since I had to reinstall windows. Do you know what the limit is on gpt/uefi windows install.

there doesn't stop being stupid and realize 2-3 or more gigs of your data is already unrecoverable because you didn't even bother protecting it

your disk scans for inodes and smart cant detect bit flips, raid can

Something in the Exabyte range. Like 128EB I think?

I follow now, mental lag. You'd likely have to pick up another drive or two, but USB3 drives also work, and better than expected, actually.

>I don't understand something, please explain it
>I don't understand something, please explain it
>I don't understand something, please explain it

>no, stop being ignorant

Jesus, no wonder nobody respects Sup Forums.

For what it's worth, the most important data is backed up to a Blu-ray-based cold storage system. I'm not completely unprepared.

Yeah, that's not me, hence the trip now.

My answer is

you're a fucking tool

make a raid and never worry about storage again
nothing else would change

Did no one else see 20 and 40tb ssds were announced? 16tb that went on sale a few days ago for $10k is pretty u realistic just like this 40tb one will be.

Last time I had money to spend, I bought 4 2tb hard drives which were the biggest size (2011) and now only one is going strong.

Fuck Western Digital! They are no better than seagate! I even had 2 drives sent back for replacement over the years. So thats like 5/6 drives that have malfunctioned over a 5 year period.

and warranty ended april

Yeah, okay, fair enough.

My motherboard's USB3 is fucked up, though.

USB3 expansion card?

Pic of what you're using might help.

Eh, don't worry too much about it. I'll figure it out myself when I have a few hundo to drop and a weekend to spend on the job.

>long term storage on flash memory
Enjoy scrambling to find enough HDDs when the SSDs start leaking electrons and hit the shitter

>Sup Forums is not your personal tech support

if you don't even want to learn the basics there's no helping you

go read a security+ book. im not kidding. It's not technical it's logistic, at least it will teach you about data loss and data retention

jesus shit, find a goal before trying to learn things

There's a difference between not being someone's personal tech support and refusing to explain a concept to someone during a discussion while simultaneously calling them retarded for not understanding it.

The first is understandable. The second makes you a tool.

meh, use them for storage.
Still slower than my 950 pro

2TB drives are ~$40. Refurb or enterprise pulls are fine, provide the auction isn't for just one or two drives.

A couple years ago I sold a lot of 600GB 15K SAS pulls. They were tested spares, with an average of 200 hours use time.

it takes more than a Sup Forums blogpost, otherwise you'll be asking pedantic and enraging quations for the next 20 related therads. stop being a pussy and go ready a damn book

This. I have hard drives falling out my ass.

Also, are they used? I love used hard drives.

I'd sell all of them and buy a nice Dell workstation laptop maxed out as much as possible.

Got no use for such large capacity storage, the cash would be infinitely more useful.

Welcome to Sup Forums

with 15TB of recovered human data one could write a baller anthro thesis

Not being able to sell them is a drag since I'd otherwise just use them in a server. Obviously after replacing all my drives with them (but keeping backups on my old drives).

That depends.

15T from 1 person, yeah, on him.
From 15 people, not enough sample size to make any accurate conclusions

fuck 1
marry 1
kill 1
kill the other 7

i guess i didn't really try to imply from 1 person but i meant it and saw it after my post, yea you're right

fill it with random data, put some top secret NSA illiminati stickers on it and drop it somewhere

>box of my own design

triggered

you mean a whitebox, right? Not much a design goes on there, just slap things together. "my own design", sounds like you soldered the soc and drew the pcb in altium or some shit. And

> using windows server for file server

terrible choice, I tell you
