Aren't quadcopters absolutely boring? I had this mindset ever since I saw the FPV video from a DIY RC plane that went for an 80km flight in one direction and back. That's nuts. The learning curve on planes is relatively high compared to quadcopters, and even more so for helicopters. Plus quads are much better than planes for most aerial photography purposes because of their hovering and retard-friendly three-axis control scheme.
There's no particular reason you couldn't build a quad capable of going long distances, though you're not going to get plane-like endurance out of them for obvious reasons.
