I unplugged my desktop and magically this old keyboard installed itself correctly upon reboot.

Some laptops continue charging the battery whenever plugged in, even if they're full. Usually doesn't apply to those with internal batteries.
Also the motherboard will continue to wait for certain inputs like said, and the cmos battery won't lose charge as long as it's plugged in.
