I've only used FreeNAS.
Curious to know if there are better.
literally any linux distro with zfs support
I recommend arch
why do you need a "nas distro" aren't you limiting your capabilities?
> literally any linux distro with zfs support
So, BSD then.
bsd is not linux
since bsd sucks proprietary cocks
Illmatic
Synology DSM, of course
Anybody know of any nas that has asymmetric raid other than drobo and synology?
Well, Synology uses mdadm with a few scripts and wrappers, so you can probably implement it in every linux machine
Perhaps because he's running a storage-focused device and does not need the bloat and complexity of a general purpose distro.
Apt get install samba-server
> Pretending that is hipster OS designed for people who think Linux is too mainstream should be used on any device, ever
why would you use any of these?
Just put a proper general-purpose Linux distribution (Or FreeBSD if you're into that, like ) on it and install what you want. It's not hard, and it's so much more flexible, since you can do things with the computer other than serving files.
Useless for NAS
why would I use zfs over, say, ext4?
>lolol everyone's a hipster xDDD
Fuck off, cancer.
FreeBSD + ZFS + jails
has the added benefit of allowing other jails to provide services other than file hosting, like a DNS or web caching server
Assuming I don't have any NAS suitable hardware, is it worth getting the FreeNAS Mini? It's only $999, which is like a fucking low end Macbook, and I hear it's hardware is optimized for NAS, but I'm wondering if there are any better deals.
snapshots, integrated volume management, faster software striping than hardware RAID solutions, intent journal and L2ARC to improve read and write speeds, data deduplication... it's a thoroughly modern filesystem compared to extend, which is still tied to some of the limitations of ext2/3 and other "classical" filesystems
no, freenas is fucking shitty and only the tools on Sup Forums praise it. zfs in general isnt worth the hassle
*ext4, not extend
Windows server 2012 R2 + Drivepool
>zfs in general isnt worth the hassle
Okay buddy.
It's obvious SOMEONE has never administered a proper file system
