Bloated, proprietary trash.
What would you recommend instead of it? My uni is using it to teach us programming.
/thread
You know it's bloated when it needs 35GB space. There are some things such as "limit". Also,
>telemetry spyware in the compiler
A lot of firms I have worked/interned for use it for developmental purposes. For some of my upper level classes at the uni I'm going to we have to know the ins and outs of visual studio pretty well.
Unless you're a NEET that's pedantic enough to prefer an obscure open source variant of VS there's no reason why you shouldn't learn it if you want to look more profitable
You're better off not learning how to use a non-standard IDE while you're learning to program at the same time. Use it for now and find something you like better when you got your shit together.
Best IDE ever made.
Only poor linux users say otherwise.
This is why it's important to use GNU, tell this "university" (Microsoft-funded brainwashing institution) that you do not use an operating system that supports the proprietary software that they are trying to force on you and that education should be platform-agnostic. And remind them who is paying their bills if they give you any shit.
Bloated and slow.
I still use it though. The only better IDEs are JetBrains IDEs but their C/C++ IDE isn't free.
You could always be a neckbeard and use vim or emacs and waste more time configuring it than actual programming.
Best C/C++ IDE.
And pretty much a must for .NET development, along with Resharper.
Use whatever you want and learn CMake.
That way it doesn't matter.
Ι'd јust like tο interјect fοr a mοment. What yοu're referring tο as Linux, is in fact, GΝU/Linux, οr as Ι've recently taken tο calling it, GΝU plus Linux. Linux is nοt an οperating system untο itself, but rather anοther free cοmpοnent οf a fully functiοning GΝU system made useful by the GΝU cοrelibs, shell utilities and vital system cοmpοnents cοmprising a full OS as defined by ΡOSΙX.
Many cοmputer users run a mοdified versiοn οf the GΝU system every day, withοut realizing it. Τhrοugh a peculiar turn οf events, the versiοn οf GΝU which is widely used tοday is οften called "Linux", and many οf its users are nοt aware that it is basically the GΝU system, develοped by the GΝU Ρrοјect.
Τhere really is a Linux, and these peοple are using it, but it is јust a part οf the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the prοgram in the system that allοcates the machine's resοurces tο the οther prοgrams that yοu run. Τhe kernel is an essential part οf an οperating system, but useless by itself; it can οnly functiοn in the cοntext οf a cοmplete οperating system. Linux is nοrmally used in cοmbinatiοn with the GΝU οperating system: the whοle system is basically GΝU with Linux added, οr GΝU/Linux. All the sο-called "Linux" distributiοns are really distributiοns οf GΝU/Linux.
>want to compile C++
>downloads 3gb file to do so
I'm terribly sorry for interjecting another moment, but what I just told you is GNU/Linux is, in fact, just Linux, or as I've just now taken to calling it, Just Linux. Linux apparently does happen to be a whole operating system unto itself and comprises a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Most computer users who run the entire Linux system every day already realize it. Through a peculiar turn of events, I was misled into calling the system "GNU/Linux", and until now, I was unaware that it is basically the Linux system, developed by the Linux project.
There really isn't a GNU/Linux, and I really wasn't using it; it is an extraneous misrepresentation of the system that's being used. Linux is the operating system: the entire system made useful by its included corelibs, shell utilities, and other vital system components. The kernel is already an integral part of the Linux operating system, never confined useless by itself; it functions coherently within the context of the complete Linux operating system. Linux is never used in combination with GNU accessories: the whole system is basically Linux without any GNU added, or Just Linux. All the so-called "GNU/Linux" distributions are really distributions of Linux.
Bloated as fuck but works very well IMO. It's what I use.
vs2008 seems like the last great ms IDE
next versions went downhill especially in term of bloat
It's the best and the industry standard
Don't let autistic neets convince you otherwise
Use it every day and it works well for .NET languages. Don't let retards convince you it's shit, it's especially amazing with Resharper.
For anything else I'd rather use something lightweight like VS Code.
>10-40GB to install
Into the trash
Nigga, even Apple CrapCode is a better C++ IDE
Essential for any windows programming. Otherwise, just use anything else.
It's bloated and has a mediocre editor, but that's not so bad I guess.
Too slow for current projects except poor xbox/lumia apps.
Devs don't want to use it because they were traumatised by windows.
Best IDE ever made
People like to shit on it because "muh bloat" but other IDEs like android studio and RAD studio are much more bloated, less useful and just a fucking mess.
Also, VS 2015 is about 8gb when you untick everything but C#, which is pretty much fine considering how useful it is.
>8gb
>when you untick everything
top kek
>VS 2015 is about 8gb when you untick everything but C#, which is pretty much fine considering how useful it is.
As a MS-only user, that's ludicrous. MS is doing its best to force people to leave it
Can anyone explain why does it take up so much space? Additionally it eats RAM like crazy.
sdadsadsasddsaadsdsadassd
Does it require .NET to install?
For all of you complaining about the initial install size, look for the new installer in the beta.
They promise a first install of about 400mo.
I like Sup Forums, you guys would download a 3gb 1080p anime episode, but out of sudden 8gb is a calamity.
>his shitty text editor takes up 3 high quality movie space
top kek
babbys first IDE
Real men turn vim into an IDE. It can do everything visual studio can and then some.
When my company hires developers we if grep -q "Visual Studio "$Resume"; then rm $Resume fi.
VS fags aren't real coders and don't belong here. They belong on my little pony and other pedophile forums.
You waste your precious time learning it in an expensive school!
Enjoy your future amazing $2/hour max job!
>3gb
>"high quality movie"
Are you one of those fucking retards who think YiFy tier movies are "high quality"?
This.
I use Visual Studio with a bunch of free extensions every day and I'm comfy as fuck.
Why ide ? Take any editor with highlight (emacs, sublime etc) and compiler.
>he can't read irony
nice aspergers
Is there another C/C++ compiler for Windows instead of MinGW and without the bloatware that is Visual Studio?
>telemetry spyware in the compiler
Are you serious?
>"read irony"
Forget it, you just answered my question
stay butthurt :^)
Yes you accepted it by downloading visual studio installer.
Just like the google chrome web installer.
>:^)
Le im a retard face
Visual studio is actually really bad.
The only reason you hear about it so much is because MS pays shills to post positively about it on social media. They also manipulate stackoverflow questions.
vim is much better and it's free as in freedom.
Most people who use visual studio are laughed at by real programmers in the industry, lots of insider memes we pass around. We even blacklist people for using microsoft products.
yes, I am making a retard face to illustrate how stupid you sound :^)
A little bit outdated, they changed their rules and you can't disable it now.
It's good but the vim plugin is required for proper use.
>yes, I am making a retard face to illustrate how stupid i sound :^)
ftfy
Is there a good windows installer with pre-installed plugins?
whatever helps u restore ur fragile ego :^)
>u
>ur
Why do you insist on make youself seem more and more retarded?
hoping if i act retarded enough u'll feel we're equals :^)
What a fucking retard
Ikr, bet your parents regret making u :^)
...
Looks like I broke u lmao, my job is done here, bye ;^)
This is true, if you don't have the source code for your programming tools, and if your main editor is not either Vim or Emacs, there are going to be a lot of important people that instantly disregard you.
>my job is done here, bye
I made a retard shitposter leave Sup Forums today, i made Sup Forums a slithly better place, good for me.
go outside if you're going to roughhouse
So, do you plan to address the fact that vs is bloated garbage or just shitpost?
It's the best C++ IDE, and it's the only real IDE you can develop for windows on, but it's bloated trash that doesn't stand up to text editor + cmake + compiler. MSVC is full of macros and extensions too that might trip up beginners and make them think that MSVC shit is part of the langauge (and yes, beginners be wary because in university they taught intro programming with VS).
I don't get what's difficult in teaching people how to use a C++ compiler since they taught me javac rather than IDE for java. I was in the dark forever on how to compile C or C++ programs until I discovered it's simple you just list all the source files, and then you can just move on to one of those really generalized makefiles.
>weights 10 GB
>turns on slowly as fuck
>uses many ram
but other than that it's pretty fucking good
Lel, I remember being this guy
My professors had the patience of saints
>sometimes copy/paste stops working
>have to restart VS
ugghhhh
VS: +10 GB, slow as fuck
Sublime text + MinGW gcc: 100 MB, confy and responsive
Is the decision really had to make ?
Maybe if everyone you work with is autistic.
Its ok if you are forced to program in c#
If you write c or c++ with it you're a retard
>turns on slowly as fuck
why are you not using ssd yet
I work with 100k+ lines project that has both C++ (mainly low-level hardware interaction and interop) and C# code. You tell me to use Vim?
takes too long to load, too much disk space
>Sublime text
>using proprietary text editors
>using text editors that COST MONEY
What happened to Sup Forums
>he thinks visual studio can handle big projects better than vim
Retard alert!
they're probably webdevs they dont represent Sup Forums
I like VS 2010.
Problem is that It's not supported anymore on a lot of micro$shaft libraries.
VS + Resharper + VsVim on a good hardware (i7 6700, 16GB of ram, SSD) is pretty comfy to pay the rent.
>Resharper
Absolutely useless.
Either use a text editor, or use something like clion
why has no one said Geany?
What about VS Code?
to people recommending MinGW, do you use MinGW or Mingw-w64?
Visual Studio Community together with Reshaper eats more resources than fucking Eclipse.
HOW?
Don't listen to these freetards. MinGW is only for cross compilation and porting. You can't write real software with it. Important debugging tools like valgrind require a linux kernel for instance and once you're terminal debugging might as well use i3. Meanwhile MSVC can catch segmentation faults as if they were regular exceptions making debugging as easy as Java / C#.
If you want to use GNU so badly, man up and install linux. If you stay on Windows, use MSVC, you dumb nigger.
Intel. But it costs lodsamoney.
Why not just using Rider, the C#/C++/.Net IDE of JetBrains.
It's currently 3x faster than VS and has more useful features.
jetbrains.com
It's better than Sublime Text and Atom. It's not a replacement for full on VS (especially not for C and C++) but when it comes to text editors you could do a lot worse.
You just gotta use it for some things
cigwin
Yeah, I can agree with you there (particularly with Android Studio).
Personally my reason to start using something like Visual Studio 2015 was to see how C++ and overall software development was like on the Windows platform.
I tried foss compilers and environments on the Windows platform, but they just turned out to be Unix implementations on an NT based system, and because of that I just thought that I might as well be using Linux in that case.
I'm using Visual Studio now experimentally, seeing if it's worth my time. If it is, good, if not, oh well, I can uninstall it and work through a Linux virtual machine or vim.
Though I will admit that something like Visual Studio should be foss (if not for those Microsoft suits).
I make sure that with every piece of software, ESPECIALLY developer software, I use that it is free & open source software (foss).
This is the only exception I've ever made, so Microsoft's VS 2015 better be worth my time.
This thread is full of lies, nobody is still using visual studio for cpp development except some old github projects. Enterprises don't want Microsoft in their walls and avoid it.
What are the good Vim plugins for refactoring, navigating class hierarchy, finding symbol references (the exact symbol of class, not just thing with the same name) and making database models, so that everything fits with consistent keybinds?
I use Vim myself, but for small personal projects.
Did your mommy tell you that when she brought the nuggies down for you?
CMAKE CAN GENERATE VISUAL STUDIO PROJECT FILES AS WELL AS MAKEFILES
EVERYONE SHOULD JUST USE CMAKE AND THEN THEY CAN USE WHATEVER EDITOR / IDE THEY WANT
Be careful it's a scam!
Except every AAA video game developer in the world.
You. Can't. Debug. With. MinGW. For. Commercial. Products.
Best IDE ever
I use Visual Studio at work.
I much prefer JetBrains IDEs, but I do C#/.NET development and Project Rider isn't at the level it needs to be for heavy usage yet.
You only believe this because you're an amateur developer who surrounds him self with other amateurs.
People actually making money from game dev are using a variety of tools and most real programmers hate visual studio.
Vim is better anyway
No idea what you are trying to do!
Sorry but I developed some parts of the major gamedev environment and I have never used visual studio. AAA game development is not as lucrative as you think, most of budget is for advertising and devs work for less than $30 a day, mostly Indians.
