I think it helps for small resolution displays with smaller fonts. If I make fonts bigger then you can't really tell the difference like you said.

It's because you don't have the KDE specific font settings done correctly.
Most fonts on the system can be handled globally by freetype etc. but KDE tries doing it's own changes but sucks at it.
