i usually use gedit but i need to be able to code things on my other pc and notepad.exe doesn't cut it

Sublime text 3. It technically isn't free, but has an unlimited trial. Great for websites(HTML, JavaScript, CSS) because you can emulate it by right clicking and clicking open-in-browser. Has other languages as well and everything is color coded.
