Plan 9 has been frequently discussed in nerd circles for years. It's far too popular. Almsot everyone knows it.

You can always use a popular system like Windows ironically. This gets you the same street cred as using an obscure system unironically.
Personally I use Windows 10 ironically.

Install haiku, its sort of a beOS clone.
Haiku is a great OS to try out, but it doesn't have a lot of software. It will satisfy your hipster needs though.

It is possible but not practical. Unstable and performance lags behind Linux. Nevertheless, both Arch Hurd and Debian GNU/Hurd are usable and work fine for average needs.
