I'm looking into SFF or mini-pc servers. This i7-960 is a power hog just to run headless linux VM's in esxi.

Got an access point in the mail to replace the wrt54g

Post what you use your server for, lads.
MEMES
Is that an Xbox 360 network cable?
Good eye. I actually just got the edgerouter and it's the only extra one I had laying around. Bought a bunch of 5foot cables. They're on the way.
Plex, sonarr, openvpn, dokuwiki, and learning more about linux administration. I'm currently setting up a spacewalk server.
whats wrong with virtual box?
How do you monitor your openvpn? Is there a front-end you can install?
what are you hosting with dokuwiki?
It can be unstable and isn't as good by a long shot as VMware, KVM and Xen. The only okay-ish thing to use virtualbox for is just testing something for an hour but it certainly isn't gonna cut it for hosting a server.
But its secure though, right?
I use it for win 7 machines all the time now, vmplayer became too much of a hastle to use/run. It was a pain in the ass to install and it didnt just werk. Sometimes it would boot up, other times it wouldnt.
>Oracle and security
Need a link to all the security flaws they have and statements they made that people shouldn't test their security because it's "their job".
Oracle is an utter shit company.
If you're on Linux just use something like kvm with gnome-boxes or VMware and on Windows just try to get VMware up and running till there is an alternative I guess.
I use my server for a VPN and Nas I'm about to get 3 2u server for 30 bucks and I'm using those for dns server Web server and an email server.
Finally maxed this guy to 16GB to play around with libvirt/KVM.
Currently running samba, dnsmasq, nginx, vsftpd and tftpd in the base install; transmission (two separated instances), asterisk and cacti in systemd containers.

Good looking server. Love the case on those microservers.
m900 i7-6700 refurbished from the lenovo outlet
gentoo on hyper-v / win10 pro
case is ugly but it was cheap
>Lenovo outlet
care to share friend? Looking for an i7 for DVR cameras.
Im on linux, and wow, didnt know that. Thanks.
>Nothing rackmountable
>No 10GbE
>No hotswappable drives
keep on LARPing that these are "servers"
No problem. I use a lot of virtualization myself. Primarily with VMware Workstation. But boxes is great for fast and easy virtualisation and you can also manage the same vm's using virt manager if you want to do crazy complicated stuff like hardware passthrough. Great stuff.
>crazy complicated stuff
>hardware passthru
wut
>rackmountable
Get on my level, side shelf mountable.
OrangePi?
Naw, old ass odroid-c that I don't use anymore.
Tbh I should not have used that as an example of complicated but it's a lot better than most virtualization software.
>a lot better
>than most virtualization software.
VMware Workstation isnt most hypervisors
Rather use kvm/libvirt/virt-manager or hyper-v if on Windows.
ILO2/3/4 full license key

no one cares
what software do you use for nas?
What are you virtualizing your stuff on then? Your main pc? Some old closet tower?
What hardware makes a device a client?
right now Im doing nested vms just to sort the files out of my vmware vms, idk if that counts as "complicated" or not.
Whats the tldr on boxs, is it standalone? Can it run any os or just linux vms?
What do you look like?
The shitbox you're posting from.
wow, rude
How cute...
newfag confirmed
If you use that in your house, you have literal autism.
>I dont know the difference between a FibreChannel and Ethernet switch
>I'm just going to repost other peoples pics
I have a raritan too
It was. That pic is several years old. The environment has been upgraded and moved to a data center.
>you have literal autism.
You say that like it's a bad thing...
>I dont know the difference between a FibreChannel and Ethernet switch
Was mostly commenting on the single miss-matched pair, but whatever...
>I'm just going to repost other peoples pics
How do you figure that? The rack, and everything in it, used to live 6' from where I'm sitting.
>I have a raritan too
The KX2 232 was overkill, but it was also $Free.99. Still have a bunch of D2CIM-DVUSB adapters on my desk. May be time to throw them on ebay or something.
>You say that like it's a bad thing
I never said it was a bad thing, althogh some autists tend to waste money on shit they dont need.
I didnt consider you were running a buisness out of your house.
>Was mostly commenting on the single miss-matched pair, but whatever...
oh noes, the OM3 cables were made by different people. that will result in massive dataloss
>used to
exactly
>Still have a bunch of D2CIM-DVUSB adapters on my desk.
I have a bunch of the adapters in a box like a normal person.
Wasn't really running a business. Mostly just automation testing. It was also scrap from work, so the only thing I had to spend money for was the rack.
And the power to run it all.
How many watts was all of that?
>oh noes, the OM3 cables were made by different people.
It shows alludes to sloppy cabling.
>used to
>exactly
Exactly what? You've exactly gone full retard? Never go full retard, user.
>I have a bunch of the adapters in a box like a normal person.
Good for you.
Uhhh... Almost 3K I think. The power bill went about $150/month when I had to do some stability testing for a few things. It was off when not in use.
>It shows alludes to sloppy cabling.
says the man with fiber which isnt connected and doesnt have dust boots installed, ignored minimum bend radiuses on his fiber, couldn't be bothered to get fiber which was remotely the correct length and has to have an extra 10m coiled up, and has mismatched copper cable
>>>used to
>exactly
>Exactly what?
You're posting pics of things you dont have anymore?
>fiber which isnt connected and doesnt have dust boots installed
Was a mid installation pic, but sure.
> ignored minimum bend radiuses on his fiber
Nope, bend radius is within spec.
>couldn't be bothered to get fiber which was remotely the correct length and has to have an extra 10m coiled up
1M at max
> and has mismatched copper cable
Because nothing would be color coded at all...
Anything that touched a KVM console (KVM, ILO, DRAC) was black. Anything that was client facing was blue.
>You're posting pics of things you dont have anymore?
In that you are correct, yes. I no longer own the 2950's, R900's, or AX4 anymore. I've replaced them with R710's, R910's, and a VNX 5400. I've also moved them to a data center and out of the house.
How would you rate the edgerouter? I have two unifi APs and want to add to my ubiquiti arsenal
It's basically an easy tool to set op a vm via kvm. It's not for complicated stuff but more to get a simple vm up and running for testing or other simple things.
Using old dell r900's and 2950's, jesus kid, try harder.
>It was mid installation
>even though the servers at U11/12 and U9/100 dont have FC cards
>Nope, bend radius is within spec.
Not even close at the switch
>1M at max
that massive spool of cabling at the bottom right is a fuck load more than 1 meter
>Anything that touched a KVM console (KVM, ILO, DRAC) was black. Anything that was client facing was blue.
mixing things which are and are not ethernet with the same color makes total sense. speaking of which why the fuck is both the raritan and BMC ports both connected on those servers? that makes no sense.
>I've also moved them to a data center and out of the house.
I'm sure you're renting a half rack to store some shitboxes
>inb4 i work at one and its a company benefit
they're not going to give you that much free power and rack space, a couple U sure, but they're not going to let you have a half rack for free. and you're not going to pay data center rates to store half a rack of old as fuck servers.
>sure you're renting
sure you're not renting
I have ~1.4 TB of media on my server shared through NFS and Emby. I just have it on one 4TB HDD right now, but I may set up a RAID later. I have everything connected to a UPS just in case. I just built it out of components that I have replaced in my main desktop. Also, my server is liquid cooled, because the one cooler I had laying around was a closed loop liquid cooler.
I want to set it up as a seedbox as well, but I need to find a way to route only the torrent traffic through my VPN. I want to keep the Terraria server off of the VPN.
>Anything that touched a KVM console (KVM, ILO, DRAC) was black. Anything that was client facing was blue.
also the ethernet port on the raritan was black when it should have been blue as it was client facing
Anyone here have an example homepage script on their server to show disk usage, cpu usage, etc?
