Isnt every SSD proprietary?
>"why would you want to upgrade an ssd"
incoming
it's PCI Express OP
you want this, it's 5x faster than a normal SSD, they had to do this
it can run at 2000+mbps vs 550mbps for a normal ssd
you can upgrade you just have to buy from ebay
CHYNA!
It means you can't replace it with a normal SSD, it's completely different.
Bullshit. I can't buy any other off the shelf PCI SSD. I have to buy Apple shit that will break 2 days after the warranty ends and give me only 256 GB of space.
it's basically a different form factor m.2 pci express drive
>it can run at 2000+mbps
nice meme
That you can't buy
>it can run at 2000+mbps
Why the fuck would I need such speed on a Facebook machine?
ok i know this is a troll, but in case there's anybody who's completely ignorant to SSD tech, Apple could have used an m.2 SSD, which is smaller than the bullshit that Apple used and also uses PCIe for 2000+mbps
Apple doing this is a fucking retarded money grab.
>Bullshit. I can't buy any other off the shelf PCI SSD. I have to buy Apple shit that will break 2 days after the warranty ends and give me only 256 GB of space.
you can buy a 512 it just has to be out of another macbook, they will be on ebay just like the last ones are
so don't buy a mac if you don't like it but it's literally about the fastest thing you can buy anywhere, it's not proprietary just to be proprietary it's to get off the SATA bus and onto the PCI bus
also 3 months from now clones will be out from china
just like last time
>That you can't buy
yet
people with bigger ones will be selling theirs off on ebay soon just like last time and clones will come out in larger capacities, just like last time
the ram is soldered in you should be more butthurt about that
>Why the fuck would I need such speed on a Facebook machine?
>you
wouldn't, I might
>it's not proprietary just to be proprietary it's to get off the SATA bus and onto the PCI bus
A better alternative has existed for years, it's called M.2 and it's smaller.
>Apple doing this is a fucking retarded money grab.
all their other m.2s were proprietary as well you can't go to newegg and buy one that will work with apple, you can get them on ebay though
welcome to like 3 years ago, you should have been butthurt the fixed the ram to the mobo
the real reason is they found out like 95% of people never upgrade the hd or ram so they went with their own form factors and said fuck it
>it's not proprietary just to be proprietary
uh, yes it is. m.2 SSDs have used the PCI bus for over three years and they're completely commonplace; there are hundreds of motherboards available that have an m.2 slot.
>A better alternative has existed for years, it's called M.2 and it's smaller.
write apple a letter and tell them you are mad
also don't buy one
problem solved
btw the m.2 stick form apple used before was proprietary as well
>went with their own form factors and said fuck it
...you mean they spent money developing a proprietary interface so that they could charge even more for their shitty hardware?
You are the reason that there's so much animosity toward Mac users.
All rMBP MBA use a proprietary SSD dummy.
So you have no argument, pajeet.
>also don't buy one
I never intended to.
>btw the m.2 stick form apple used before was proprietary as well
Great, that's also bad. but it doesn't change the fact that m.2 is an industry standard that Apple could have used.
Remember when you said
>you want this, it's 5x faster than a normal SSD, they had to do this
you were completely fucking wrong and now you're changing your tune instead of just admitting that you have no idea what the fuck you're talking about.
fuck off
>...you mean they spent money developing a proprietary interface so that they could charge even more for their shitty hardware?
no they did it because they were first to market and standards had not yet been set, they wanted the speed and got samsung to make the drives, then the specs for the mainstream consumer/windows m.2s came out a year later and were different to be usable in more devices
it was them being first to market that made them unique
apple tries to be first to market, when we start getting benchmarks from this new hd you will see why apple did this
the next gen will no doubt be welded in like current ram, they are not meant to be replaced
>you were completely fucking wrong and now you're changing your tune instead of just admitting that you have no idea what the fuck you're talking about.
i am trying to explain this to you but you are too thick to understand simple words
bye
Are you a fucking retard? Its been this way since 2012.
>it's not proprietary just to be proprietary it's to get off the SATA bus and onto the PCI bus
like NVME?
>the next gen will no doubt be welded in like current ram, they are not meant to be replaced
Which is ridiculous and the only reason this is done is to promote obsolescence
>...you mean they spent money developing a proprietary interface so that they could charge even more for their shitty hardware?
you can say what you want but cutting edge hardware like this is not "shitty"
the new mb pros have the fastest hard drives of any laptops in the world, they are faster than off the shelf m.2s
they just don't want people to get a cheaper model and upgrade the ssd themselves
>uh, yes it is. m.2 SSDs have used the PCI bus for over three years and they're completely commonplace; there are hundreds of motherboards available that have an m.2 slot.
you are wrong, those m.2s won't work in a macbook, the connections were proprietary because apple came out with them first
>the new mb pros have the fastest hard drives of any laptops in the world
This is a lie and you know it. Don't be so obvious with your fanboyism.
>the new mb pros have the fastest hard drives of any laptops in the world
0.00001 BTC has been deposited into your wallet
>>the new mb pros have the fastest hard drives of any laptops in the world
>This is a lie and you know it. Don't be so obvious with your fanboyism.
no it's not look it up
>not soldering the ssd to the logic board for maximum speed
>not designing the mobo with an integrated SSD from factory
Inevitably it's the only way they'll be able to shave off an extra mm from the chasis.
Samsung 960 Pro - 3500Mbps/2100Mbps sequential write/read
Macbook Pro 2016 - 3100Mbps/2100mbps sequential write/read
>wow MacBooks have shit specs, so overpriced!
>actually it's 5x faster etc..
>lel why need fast specs on Facebook machine
99% of people don't need anything faster than i3, HDD and 4 GB of RAM.
but muh thinnness
The interface to "talk" with it is an open standard, which is what really matters.
C U C K E D

inb4 it doesn't count because Apple is using Samsung NAND and chose to make it slower for some esoteric reason
Literally been this way for years.
If they wanted thinness they would use this.
This. Since 2012 all SSDs in MacBooks are more or less proprietary. The OWC ones reverse engineered the firmware or something like that and they cost almost as much as the entire machine, so it's pretty useless
Either you buy the right capacity when you buy it or you're shit out of luck
>Literally been this way for years.
this
welcome to 3 years ago OP
they think the old drives are interchangeable with other m.2 drives but they are not
just solder that onto mobo
that will be thinner then
>Either you buy the right capacity when you buy it or you're shit out of luck
you can hook up a regular external ssd and still get 550mbps via usbc
Yeah I meant for internal storage of course
>not being butthurt the ram is literally soldered to the motherboard
get your talking points right OP, be mad about the right stuff!
>Not upgradable
>Implying Apple cucks upgrade their hardware anyways
Atleast they will get better performance as it would probably be more optimised. I see nothing wrong here.
true
but what can you do
i bet the next version will literally have them soldered in like the ram, but at least you can hook up to a fast external drive you are not doomed to regular usb spinning drives as external storage
that's why they do it honestly, they found out like 98% of people never upgrade the ram or hd
pissed off the nerds though...
Mostly for video editing software. A lot of people render 4K shit on Macbooks and this will improve the process times immensely.
>>not being butthurt the ram is literally soldered to the motherboard
>get your talking points right OP, be mad about the right stuff!
this,
get it together OP
Stop samefagging
wat
You literally made half of the posts in this thread, stop posting.
>You literally made half of the posts in this thread, stop posting.
nope
stay mad though
They've been using a proprietary ssd since 2012 :)
(You)
>4K
>on a fucking laptop
But then again Aplel babbies don't really do serious work and act like their iPhone 4K videos are the real deal
>Multiple opinions that don't align with mine?
>Must be a samefag
Kys senpai
It doesn't.
If you're working on 1080p or even 4k uncompressed footage you're always working on hundreds, not thousands of MB/s, in sequential reads, and that's something even an HDD can do. A standard SSD (like the 50€ ones you find on amazon) will do the job flawlessly.
As long as the CPU/GPU don't render a 4K video at 3x the playback speed (and that's something unusual on a macbook) you don't have problems on reading times.
Go back ricing your DE, don't talk about things you don't know.
>mad, the post
>a faster hd won't load huge files faster
oh ok
Who cares, you haven't been able to upgrade anything else in the MBP for years.
>4k video editing
>on a fual core mobile CPU
You said something wrong, you said that this increase in performance will "immensely improve" render times for video editors. I'm a video editor and I call that bullshit.
The bottleneck is CPU, right?
Why won't Apple install 64 GB of RAM in their computers and give users RAMDISK by default so that they can store their video files that they work on in it?
they are sort of trying to do that with a super fast hd
64gb of ram would use a lot of power and be very expensive
>and be very expensive
This would still cost less than a regular 1 TB SSD drive or a 256 GB Apple drive.
not for 64gb that's not current laptop memory
it would kill the battery to have that much memory
>it would kill the battery to have that much memory
Bullshit. You can buy Workstations with 64 GB memory which can easily run for 8 hours on a 9 cell. i7 octa core CPU and NVIDIA GPU kill the Battery, not RAM.
if you are doing what he said and using it as a ramdrive you are going to use a lot more power than just having the ram installed
>it's just about the fastest thing you can buy anywhere
I can buy a Dell PowerEdge R710 secondhand for less than a Macbook Pro on eBay.
Impractical? Probably. But you're wrong about the Macbook Pro being anywhere near the "fastest" computationally or in terms of write speed.
among laptops bro
you get no benefit from higher then 500~ anyway, and the VERY few applications that do get a benefit you are not doing them on a laptop
>you get no benefit from higher then 500~ anyway
look at the programs and boot times, .1 second is the only difference from 600 to 3200mb/s read. and the very few things that would benefit from that much read, as in massive video recording or editing, is not being done from a laptop.
Oh, and if your entire program isn't in memory after boot, then the programs is fucking shit.
>le 3200mb/s
>dual core CPU
I have an m.2 and i can tell my computer is faster using it day to day vs. an intel ssd especially when moving big files from one place to another such as video or when loading levels in video games
Wait a minute... This girl... Isn't she the one that used to put sharpies in her pooper?
Umm i dont think you could upgrade the flash based MBP Retina's either. Not that big of a deal to me anyway. My 2013 MBP will probably the first and last apple computer i'll ever buy.
...
Number 4, rest are trash
A lot of businesses provide same-day edits for purchase or other things like that.
It's fucking stupid however because they never charge enough for that service - it's impossible. We're talking needing an editor on site editing ALL THE TIME, which means he'll barely be able to do data management. It's ridiculous desu.
Dude how old are these pics then
isn't that from like 2007 or some shit
...
>when moving big files
You proved his point. You are bot going to do stuff that actually involve moving huge files around with a mobile dual core.
>You are bot going to do stuff that actually involve moving huge files around with a mobile dual core
yes i do
YOU ARE TOO DUMB TO BE ON THIS BOARD
this isn't news, this has been the cars since at least 2014
sorry op, your 24 months too late to complain this time.
better luck next time slowpoke
You can't upgrade the SSD on the majority of cheap plastic chromebooks either but people still keep buying them.
because HSF is so slow
cheap pastic chromebooks dont cost $1500
Butter FS master race!
