Is optical media dead? I rarely, if ever, see anyone using CDs or DVDs anymore.

Do you still use them? What for?

No. People won't be throwing away their old stuff.

I buy the Blu-ray movies I want to own. So there's that.

i still haven't used a bluray disc

DVD is doing good in terms of movies. Blu-ray is just a meme format and it's likely we won't really see any major format coming to replace it as we move into online streaming.

I've never even held a bluray disk.

I use CD-s and DVD-s to burn linux and windows of them because i'm pitty to delete the stufff on my ubs stick

optical media will remain for a while b/c gaymen xb1/ps4 and movies for honest but poorfags renting/buying cheapo titles @ walmart fromt he $3 bin for the kiddies.

i think the last optical format will be bluray 4k in usa. eventually everything will be stream or buy & download. maybe... just maybe they will start using solid state as a physsical medium in stores.. usb sticks/sd cards.

My 2015 iMac doesn't even have an optical drive.

I bought their SuperDrive, but it's still in the box. Never used it.

I do watch BluRays on my PS4 though.

I use DVDs for cheap backups, burning OS images

It would seem this is a common theme for Sup Forums.
Why would pay $35NZD for a bluray when I can get it for free (or much cheaper, legally) and put it on a HDD.

Can you comprehend how much more data Blu Ray can hold? You can fit longer movies in FHD, QHD, games etc. Realistically the X360 should have used it but Microsoft made the wrong decision going for HD DVD

Blu-ray and DVD playback is horrible on the current gen consoles. It's an afterthought now. The PS3 playback quality is best.

M-Discs are very useful for long term backups.
DVDs can still be used for launching rescue discs or live Linux systems especially if you're scared of your USB being infected by a virus.
Some people still use optical media because it's cheap per GB. I have several operating system installs on DVDs.

Yeah the 360 was out at a time when a 20 GB hard drive was enough storage. But then fibre broadband rolled out and eventually Sony started releasing full games to download (Burnout Paradise I recall being one of the first). Microsoft originally only allowed downloaded games to be a set size (to fit on memory units to take round friends) but soon scrapped those limits and allowed DVD tier games to be downloaded.

The problem was the HD DVD was an add on and not inside the console from day one. In the 2010s, DVD was becoming a shit choice for games so you had games like LA Noire on 3 discs even with their new compression techniques.

HD DVD could've had a chance if it wasn't a shitty add on.

>ywn touch the ass of a black qt3.14
thanks for reminding me

Porn storage

good idea, easy to destroy in fire/microwave/brillo pad

Yeah but an 8GB USB is like 5aud so why? It's cheaper to buy that once and rewrite over it than to buy multiple DVDs over and over again.

optical media is not about to go away any time soon
its true online distribution have gained serious traction the last decade however some software can only legally be acquired in physical form and will be the closest thing to owning it you can get, again optical media does not respect your freedoms especially with things like region locks which of course is extremely incontinent for the typical user and only exist for the sake of profit

>yfw you realize you had too much to drink and are groping a black chicks ass.

Will the floppy disk ever make a comeback?

i dont believe so especially since very few devices can accept them these days
they are however still used in some places like japan where they are stuck in the 60´s regarding offices, yes they actually install wangblows via floppy

>mfw her bf sees it

>mfw my wife's son sees it

I need a lightweight disc burning software. What's my best option?

>I can get it much cheaper, legally (and put it on a HDD)
where is that magical place you're mentioning?

cdburnerxp

For playing around with older systems that can't USB boot. And older PC games I physically own.

I recently installed my operating system from a Blu-ray disk because I couldn't find a large enough usb stick.

I buy CDs to put songs on them like the Mr Robot guy
