Netbooks are too large to fit in a pocket, or at least too large to be comfortable to leave in a pocket. That makes them, in practice, no more portable than a laptop, so why sacrifice having a decently large display, better keyboard, better pointing devices, etc.?

Well I don't know what to call it. A "text-only typing device" like someone else said, I guess, which seems even worse. If I wanted something too big to fit in a pocket to lug around and type stuff on, I'd probably just buy an old ThinkPad. A 90s ThinkPad keyboard will blow away that thin chicklet stuff.

This type of machine is used by many Japanese authors (including light novel authors) for the same reason why Game of Throne's author writes on his old ass Lotus 123. Namely you can't do much except type text and save the output to .txt.

The format came out in late 90s (way before netbooks) and has a niche but stable market among Japanese computer manufactures.

I'm on win7, and duh I'm aware I can increase text size on 99% of applications (Unity conveniently NOT being one of them...). It doesn't solve the problem, after 6-8 hours I get really bad headaches.

I've tried everything. Low blue light, low brightness, high brightness, high contrast modes, extra readable fonts, regular breaks, etc.

Looking into computer glasses or bifocals

I've actually used one of these. It's basically just a keyboard with a couple of buffers you can write text in. When you get to a PC, you can plug it in via USB or PS/2 and it dumps the buffer onto whatever window you have open. Kind of neat.
