Because it's convenient. Nowadays you only really need separate /home and probably /boot for a home PC. For a server, you'd want more separation depending on the project (tip: lvm is a godsent)

I do that and I'm wondering why. Now I need to change every application settings so that they don't store data in Documents folder on C:/. But yeah, if I ever need to reinstall Windows I can do it without worrying about copying all that data. I think I should have made another partition for programs.

I've always avoided the windows Documents, Music, Pictures folders, no idea why probably just recalcitrance.

I just make my own D:/Documents etc folders and change paths in program settings every time I install something new. Now I wish to try semantic file system to organize my shit but as I'm using windows on my main PC it is difficult to switch.

you can literally change the location of those folders and everything that looks for that folder will save to the location you specify.. it's fucking simple compared to trying to force every other application to not store in the default location

There is a few of them for Linux, some examples being Tagsistant and TMSU. TMSU doesn't provide virtual file system though, you need to use it as a program.

Usually one is a small SSD for the OS, and the other is your terabytes of media.

You can change it (in the normal way, just right click under Disk Management) but it's not recommended to move C:.

as for another reason, I have an image of the C:\ for 1 customer, all the users have their files saved to D:\ and with over 1500 laptops I don't need to worry about the users files, "oh they corrupted windows, reimage C: problem solved no files lost

I always use a separate /home partition now. Then you can reinstall the OS without touching your personal files. I keep files I need quick access to in /home, which is on my SSD, and I have symlinks in my media folders (Videos, Pictures, Music, Documents, Downloads) that point to my 2tb HDD mounted at /mnt/data. I also have links to my NAS, which has 4tb of storage for all of my media.

On my laptop(libre x200) I also have a separate /home. I don't keep much media on there though, because I have a 128gb ssd in it. I can stream files from my NAS over sftp anywhere that has internet access though. Videos stream fine over the wireless fidelity at my university to my laptop.

Why would you not, in any OS, take measures to keep your data separate (and thus safe) from your system and software library?

HDDs have a descending speed curve, the beginning of the drive is sometimes even twice as fast as the end.
Splitting the drive into two partitions prevents data in the first partition to fragment into slower regions.

Not exactly. First of all, it doesn't have to be a separate drive. It can be just a separate partition.

In windows there's a huge fuckery to set it up to be really redundant. You have to make sure that your Desktop, Documents, Music, AppData, is set to be on another drive. The same applies to programs that you have to manually install to another disk.

In Linux this is sort of different. You have a mount point /home, which physically can be just a partition, or another hard drive/ssd, it can even be a network attached disk. And system is very aware what /home is for and keeps all user settings and preferences there automatically. It is also very useful if you have multiple users on one PC. In this case you'll have /home/user1 and /home/user2.

Go find me actually working modern OS which is not some proof-of-concept and modern programs, which take just 1440 KB of space.

You can practically run Linux/Unix on a diskless system

If, for example, your C:\\ getting too insufficient (or in this case, root) you can mount all your shit in multiple devices, without breaking the system

Why would I pay for those new fangalled "upgrades" when my system does everything I want.

It has become a beast since I got a 32 GB hard drive and upped it to the maximum 256 MB of RAM, many years ago. I just replace the drive every few years as preventive mantiance and use the old ones as backups. Cost far less then buying new software I don't need and won't run on my system anyway.

I will admit over theyears it has goten harder, ened up buying an adaptor for my new 120 GB hard drive. Should be able to keep saving money till they stop suporting SATA, like how nobody makes SMD anymore. Lack of parts was why I had to get my second computer, they just stopped support for my fist one, if you can belive they would abondon thier customers like that.
