theres no point in that in the current year

what if they are actually different drives?
1. usually its 1 drive
2. i'd rather merge these 2 in raid
Neet confirmed.
Here let me open the door for you on your way out.
>raid 2 drives
Uwot mate?
?
>Not using LFS
What's wrong with that?
>not wanting a shorter file tree so you don't have to hunt through folders
I've almost never seen this as one drive. It's always on a second disk.
>separate /, /boot, /var, /tmp, /home, swap partitions
why do loonixfags do this
>I've almost never seen this as one drive
laptops
>not having two RAIDs
What does this post even attempt to prove. Just because laptops come with one drive that doesn't mean I have seen people do that on a laptop.
>windows users
>short file trees

One part security, one part performance, one part convenience for servers. Don't forget separate /usr.
>RECOVERY D:/
So that you don't lose D:/ when you reinstall/install a new windows. I used to put program files on D:/ even but admittedly, that's retarded.
Because it's convenient. Nowadays you only really need separate /home and probably /boot for a home PC. For a server, you'd want more separation depending on the project (tip: lvm is a godsent)
If I decide to reinstall my distro(very unlikely) or switch to another(possible) I don't need to reinstall and backup all my shit like I have to do on windows. I just don't format /home and all my programs and setting are preserved across installations.
I do that and I'm wondering why. Now I need to change every application settings so that they don't store data in Documents folder on C:/. But yeah, if I ever need to reinstall Windows I can do it without worrying about copying all that data. I think I should have made another partition for programs.
I've always avoided the windows Documents, Music, Pictures folders, no idea why probably just recalcitrance.
Oh, I remembered. I have two disks. Would do the same for a single one though.
Yeah, I also don't like them. I don't like how I can't (easily) change the directories so that the data would actually be on D:/ drive. I just make my own D:/Documents etc folders and change paths in program settings every time I install something new. Now I wish to try semantic file system to organize my shit but as I'm using windows on my main PC it is difficult to switch.
>semantic file system
That's pretty cool, been thinking a fs with labels would be very nice. But are there practical implementations already?
you can literally change the location of those folders and everything that looks for that folder will save to the location you specify.. it's fucking simple compared to trying to force every other application to not store in the default location
Nice straw man, they're all on one partition
There is a few of them for Linux, some examples being Tagsistant and TMSU. TMSU doesn't provide virtual file system though, you need to use it as a program.
Oh shit, I didn't know. I searched for a solution, but only found some complicated ones that involved messing around in registry or using Windows recovery.
Oh, I remembered why it was so difficult. I wanted to move AppData folder as well.
well i do have more than one physical drive.
why can't I mount a second hard disk at \\Windows\Users\%USER%\
because windows is a bloated piece of trash filled with inefficient outdated spaghetti code that even the best people at microsoft can never unravel
Yeah what the fuck.
I usually delete all file structure and store every single file I have on desktop.
what's something pointless and petty that i can cling to so i can feel special and argue with people about use cases until threads get deleted
maybe using floppy disks? 'current year not mapping D:\ to Documents A:\ to Applications M:\ to Memes'?
That doesn't work it will download to C:/ and then move the files.
do you mean name drives? or use separate drive letters? i mean mine are not named but im not sure there is any built in way to mount other drives under C:
Incorrect.
>he doesn't use Everything
ahut the fuck up jordan no one likes you you dont even emulate gamecube
bump
That's dangerous as fuck wtf are you doing retard.
Usually one is a small SSD for the OS, and the other is your terabytes of media.
You can change it (in the normal way, just right click under Disk Management) but it's not recommended to move C:.
Everything has improved my life so much, it's unbelievable
> No, "Everything" does not search file contents
Start+search gives instant results for filenames and contents if you index properly.
>If I decide to reinstall my distro(very unlikely) or switch to another(possible) I don't need to reinstall and backup all my shit like I have to do on windows. I just don't format /home and all my programs and setting are preserved across installations.
so you wipe out one drive and have all the data saved to the other? is that not what the OP said was wincucks?
as for another reason, I have an image of the C:\ for 1 customer, all the users have their files saved to D:\ and with over 1500 laptops I don't need to worry about the users files, "oh they corrupted windows, reimage C: problem solved no files lost
it made sense in 2008 but MS made a sensible search engine with Vista (7)
if you'd name your files properly you wouldn't have to look for them by content
and sometimes I just wanna go to
>Type: Video
and scroll through my porn collection
Not using drives A and B?
A for boot and OS
B for currently running program
And if you got the money for a hard drive you can add
C for cross session data and memeory overflow space
I always use a separate /home partition now. Then you can reinstall the OS without touching your personal files. I keep files I need quick access to in /home, which is on my SSD, and I have symlinks in my media folders (Videos, Pictures, Music, Documents, Downloads) that point to my 2tb HDD mounted at /mnt/data. I also have links to my NAS, which has 4tb of storage for all of my media.
On my laptop(libre x200) I also have a separate /home. I don't keep much media on there though, because I have a 128gb ssd in it. I can stream files from my NAS over sftp anywhere that has internet access though. Videos stream fine over the wireless fidelity at my university to my laptop.
Why would you not, in any OS, take measures to keep your data separate (and thus safe) from your system and software library?
There's really only one answer: ignorance
Wincucks are too dumb to set up own data server at home
It'll find all your boxxy pics even if the file names are a bunch of numbers. Which is a plus for the file tree.
What dist?
software library: Program Files
data: User, Google Drive
DE is Xfce
>needing to strawman
where's your argument?
yeah, that's retarded
No, flexibility
All those can be mounted physically/remotely in separate storage devices
HDDs have a descending speed curve, the beginning of the drive is sometimes even twice as fast as the end.
Splitting the drive into two partitions prevents data in the first partition to fragment into slower regions.
tl;dr it makes windows faster
...
for what purpose?
Not exactly. First of all, it doesn't have to be a separate drive. It can be just a separate partition.
In windows there's a huge fuckery to set it up to be really redundant. You have to make sure that your Desktop, Documents, Music, AppData, is set to be on another drive. The same applies to programs that you have to manually install to another disk.
In Linux this is sort of different. You have a mount point /home, which physically can be just a partition, or another hard drive/ssd, it can even be a network attached disk. And system is very aware what /home is for and keeps all user settings and preferences there automatically. It is also very useful if you have multiple users on one PC. In this case you'll have /home/user1 and /home/user2.
Go find me actually working modern OS which is not some proof-of-concept and modern programs, which take just 1440 KB of space.
You can practically run Linux/Unix on a diskless system
If, for example, your C:\\ getting too insufficient (or in this case, root) you can mount all your shit in multiple devices, without breaking the system
what?
I think I follow

Autism warning
wiki.archlinux.org
Having a separate partition for data is wonderful, I do it on every OS
What makes you hard so much though? Do you have autism?
>"What makes you hard so much though?"
>not some proof-of-concept
>kolibrios
You failed it
1. get a brain
2. realize why it makes sense
or just go back to Sup Forums
They aren't supposed to
>Not being able to fill in "laugh" in the appropriate place
Yup here, user:
psychcentral.com
>autistic with file/system management
>accuses me of being autistic
16 btw
;^)
I know sperate /home and of course /swap but why a seperate boot? I never seen it as an option on the newbie friendly distros
>back to Sup Forums
What the fuck. How did I even get on Sup Forums I unironically thought I was browsing Sup Forums. I thought it was little weird that nobody actually talked about video games. Not that Sup Forums does talk about those awful lot more, but its there.
i'm sorry.
since we're here, pick a drive.
i shall show you my files.
Modern OS?
Why would I pay for those new fangalled "upgrades" when my system does everything I want.
It has become a beast since I got a 32 GB hard drive and upped it to the maximum 256 MB of RAM, many years ago. I just replace the drive every few years as preventive mantiance and use the old ones as backups. Cost far less then buying new software I don't need and won't run on my system anyway.
I will admit over theyears it has goten harder, ened up buying an adaptor for my new 120 GB hard drive. Should be able to keep saving money till they stop suporting SATA, like how nobody makes SMD anymore. Lack of parts was why I had to get my second computer, they just stopped support for my fist one, if you can belive they would abondon thier customers like that.
>accuses me of being autistic
You really are though. You are unable to interact with other people because of your autism.
but i read that straight through with 0 issues user
>maximum 256 MB of RAM
What the fuck are you using
Took you a while
GB + 288GB
I bet it's just all weebshit
>he thinks I have this webpage open exclusively and am refreshing it every 5 seconds in anticipation of his replies
Who are you quoting?
Bet you can't stand letting this go without needing to have the last word.
i dont watch cartoons.
>what is RAID 0 and RAID 1
always found it annoying that Shitdows7 doesn't show the size of folders in the f'ing size column
scroll to a random page in your image folder if you must
a slightly modfied setup, just stipped some things down a bit and some other small changes
MBR/Modifed GRUB ~ 2MB
Modifed Debain (for launching and secondary CLI) ~ 69MB
Emacs (as OS and main setup) ~ 10MB
Modes, active data and usable memory (reamining) ~ 175MB
>damage control
How tf do you run a web browser with only 256 MB of RAM? What OS are you even using, System V?
>merging an SSD and HDD into raid
I'm not a masochist like you and enjoy having at least some control over my system.
you cant tell which files are most used
fusion drive just werks
see my post above
doesn't explain how you can post on Sup Forums. pass user? how do you deal with javascript in general?
I don't deal with javascript, it breaks everything and makes my system go so nuts I often do a hard reset.
You don't need a pass to post without JavaScript.
Oh yeah? How, then?
By using the JavaScriptless captcha.
Where do you save all pics?
Also, what you need =/= what other one needs.
What's your job?
I doubt if your setup is useful for office workers.
I appreciate your efforts though and I actually like when anons like you make me feel that npthing is lost yet.
So, you are not using X at all?
Is it possible to run Linux within 64 megabytes?
