I'm having a hard time finding a Linux environment to settle down with. Basically, most of them suck in different ways. Nothing is coming together as a good whole. I'll give you a rundown on what I think of the main ones. I'm focusing on both desktop and laptop use.
>Gnome 3 Definition of bloat and adding abstraction to what should be kept simple. Focusing development towards tablets? Frequent breakage. I don't like it for either of my purposes. >KDE The other big popular one. Seems better than above now, but is polarizing and even more "bloated". I don't like it's look. It doesn't seem to get out of my way and let me work normally. Can anyone tell me how to make it look good? >Unity >>>Oobontoo and Canonjew Memes aside it looks like it has improved a lot. Again, it doesn't "get out of the way" and let me just do my work. It defines the entire experience of using vanilla Ubuntu for me. I'm in the group that is massively turned off by its look and taskbars. >Cinnamon Best alternative for me. Just works. Biggest problem would be the way it does workspaces now. I had it break once so I know where the consistency people are coming from. I'm iffy about how the mint team is forking and patching a bunch of "Xapps" with it. >MATE It's still a Gnome continuation. Their philosophy in itself is destructive, see what happened to Gnome 3. It does get out of the way and look nice with just a little bit of effort at least. Longtime mate user experiences? >XFCE I like it. Simple and customizable. Seems like the best option when you want to play around with different file managers and so on. This being said I'm shit at ricing it as well. Guides on customizing it would be appreciated. >LXDE, LXQT and so on K DEs, I think there is a market for them. I don't work on ancient hardware tho. And at that point WMs get even more attractive. >New hipster DEs Teach me about them pls
Reaching post limit, will discuss WMs if thread gets interest.
>Definition of bloat and adding abstraction to what should be kept simple. Explain yourself.
Brayden Peterson
Linux is trash. Install Aqua + BSD + Mach
as for DEs there, Pantheon looked quite nice.
Bentley Campbell
>Install Aqua + BSD + Mach Nigga.

>Definition of bloat and adding abstraction to what should be kept simple. >It's still a Gnome continuation. Their philosophy in itself is destructive
OP tries so hard to sound smart.

That's what I am thinking of doing. Looking for functionality and justworks™. With a good enough customized set up I don't think I would have to go back. Looking for a dynamic window manager that is functional (easy to move around and edit windows, quick access to all my files and programs). I like tiling, but float exists because it's useful. Especially on a 1366 res laptop. I regret that purchase every day. I'd also like the option to have gaps, because sometimes go full faggot. This is old, but see pic related. The first few patches of gtk+3 were full of disasters. Their devs seem anti-loonix. I'm not a full freetard, but I think programs should be designed to do simple tasks and do them well. Gnome 3 IS too big. Alexander Viro has a good quote on the Gnome people. All alternative OS are starting to look more inviting. Installing Pantheon is a pain in the ass and I don't trust the ElementOS crewd. How is the software landscape on BSD looking this day? Quick analysis feels barren. I might be a retard living under a rock.

Jesus Christ how terrifying... But I want to see it happen. Okay, touch screens, fuck me right. Touch screen is synonymous to handheld devices for me. If we could roll back the clocks to a better time eh? This does looks sane, simple, easy and functional. Easy on the eyes too. >Piru Sintonen My nigga To this and the one above, most of us aren't nostalfagging that fucking hard though.
Still looking for a dynamic WM with a sane/easy taskbar configuration.

Do. Not. Do. That.
I strongly encourage you to contribute to KDE and fix what you think needs fixing. They are awesomely open compared to how it was in KDE 4 days. Small tweaks I've noticed already done since 5.0 >better font rendering >less fuckhueg calendar >cashew finally removable >more complete icon set >many tweaks to taskbar >tray icons finally don't scale to gigantic proportions with taskbar but have capped max size FUCKING FINALLY >flattening menu finally actually flattens it to one level
Things that need polishing >stop dolphin littering .desktop files ffs >faster thumbnail re-read >better live thumbnail scaling >tray media player control has to start instantly
those are only grievances off the top of my head and I personally am determined to fix that .desktop file crap and implement some kind of hashtable instead.
everyone should contribte to KDE because it has most potential & flexibility and because it already serves as intermediate step for many projects like LxQT
Justin Russell
I quite like budgie, and it doesn't require systemdicks (unlike unity and gnome, the latter which, with a few patches, no longer does). Despite using vala, the head dev has had enough of it and is going to rewrite the vala code to C.
Joseph Watson
>If we could roll back the clocks to a better time eh? But you can. Trinity = KDE 3.5
What do you mean by that? Did you mean the .directory files it uses to store per-directory view settings in (if enabled)?
>>better live thumbnail scaling They actually broke that completely in the Plasma 5.8. Thumbnails on the desktop are now pixelated...
Dylan Roberts
>Do. Not. Do. That. What do you mean? Is it a bad idea to use a WM exclusively?
I'm not OP but I'm also bored of this shitty DE. I don't want a DE actually... I'm just using one because it's installed in noobfriendly linux distro.
Samuel Ramirez
Arch and Gentoo wikis are great at explaining XFCE ricing, if you can't even find a guide I doubt you could be able to rice anyway. The best advice I have for you my cancerous friend is to go back to windows.
Eli Green
I agree with the weeb.
Michael Torres
But Linux is not a desktop OS, why would it need such tweaks?
Jordan Barnes
I've played more video games on my Mac than I did on my gaming PC, desu.
Carter Brown
My dual head workstation running a riced Gentoo installation disagree with you.
Jason Roberts
How does running a server OS useless for a desktop OS and retardedly "riced" for desktop use disagree with the statement?
Caleb Gray
Honestly Unity and XFCE are the only real options to me, with KDE looking very promising sometime in the future. The rest are just garbage and feel very unfinished.
Ian Ross
Fuck off, Linux is not a server OS.
Jacob Bennett
Linux is a kernel, not a server OS. Said kernel with GNU utils and a desktop environment is a desktop OS. Said kernel with a JVM and some shit can be a phone OS (android). Said kernel with a command line can be a server OS.
Jonathan Campbell
KDE IS NOT BLOATED, STOP SPREADING MISINFORMATION.
I think it was the exact opposite, KDE was good, specially 1.x and 2.x, 3.x was OK and then it got shit

Tyler Wood
>What do you mean by that? Did you mean the .directory files it uses to store per-directory view settings in (if enabled)? Yes, that piece of shit exactly. I'm thinking simply creating {path:flag} hashtable where flag is just normal integer and stash that in ~/.config. then use some linear time search function to go through it every time any folder is opened in dolphin. for starters.
>>>better live thumbnail scaling >They actually broke that completely in the Plasma 5.8. Thumbnails on the desktop are now pixelated... Good! That means they are doing something to it already. Move fast and break things. Just tested and can confirm.

? I know you are referring that implication to my "attitude" but it also shows you're being way too standoffish. Thanks for the offer, I'll look into contributing somewhere when I have less work (read: study x study or p2p). And if WMs work better I'll damn well use them until someone with more time and focus pops out a better DE. Well that's a definitive bonus. Just look at that guy who broke his Oobontoo when going up from 14 to 16. I am you user and you are me. I am on Windows sadly (desktop). Once I fix my laptop gonna roll Linux though, because it's better for building up my Emacs. Best environment I've used for LaTeX. Also thanks for the advice user. Thank you Stallman, I appreciate all the hard work you are doing for us by eventually bringing True_Freedom™

clueless post coming thru
desktop enviroment != window manager?
what, i thought it was just a new synonym that ppl got to using on current times
i looked vector linux up and its light weight version uses either LXDE, Openbox, IceWM and Fluxbox
woudl this IceWM be what you re looking for OP icewm.org/ >IceWM is a window manager for the X Window System (freedesktop, XFree86). The goal of IceWM is speed, simplicity, and not getting in the user's way.
i wonder if it works on today's distros, hasn't there been some major changes in linux in general with systemd and whatnot?
Tyler Clark
DE is a package of software of which the taskbar, panel, and window manager are a part. You can have a DE without its default window manager. You do not need a DE but you need at least a window manager. A window manager is responsible for making sure that programs can have their own windows. You could not compute without it.
Levi Lopez
I think lxqt has potential to be kde without the bloat.
all des are shit, as are most wms, the only way to salvage ganoo/loonix on the desktop is to find a configurable tiling wm and accept that it's going to be a bitch to swap to because all other forms of desktop management have trained you in bad habits
not that I can take my own advice, I'm still clinging to the broken bloated buggy mess that is kde that consistently finds new ways to make me shake my head at the sheer and utter brokenness of it
Elijah Myers
At least it does not have any bloat like Linux
Ayden Stewart
So DWM? Jesus Christ now that's terrifying. Imagine that the suckless people are actually right and not just super spergs stuck in their hacker days. DWM seems interesting, I'm just a total noob at C. I'm only implying the people at cat-v and suckless are just kinda crazy.
Asher Barnes
does shadow on panel only work if on top? mine isn't working which is odd for compton.
Luke Taylor
>Complaining about bloat
I think you have bigger issues to worry about when you're using a laptop from 2008 if "bloat" is an issue for you
Camden Peterson
I just tried out Gnome for the first time. Holy fucking shit, why does anyone use this? Was this even intended to be used on PC's?
