Trying to decide which one to install. Also I've been hearing a lot of good things about Solus. Give me the pro's and cons of both, i've only had experience with Ubuntu a few years ago, but have never had linux as my main OS

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.
There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

You should install Solus
Solus is the best Linux distro I've ever used. It has a lot of polish, has probably the best DE I've used, and it's the fastest one I've used. It already has a good amount of packages, and is completely up to date. Plus, it's rolling release.
honestly as a first time user Ubuntu should be mandatory, since it makes the transition so smooth. Pretty easy, you could spend your entire time on Ubuntu without ever having to use the terminal, but it's there if you're ready to learn how to use basic Linux commands. Just understand that it's a temporary/learning/stepping-stone distro. There are a bunch of amazing distros to expose yourself to, but Ubuntu makes it a lot easier for you to make that jump. Good luck
I LOVE YOU KEVIN CONVERT ME TO SOLUS SO WE CAN BE SOLUS BUDS
Stop giving the fat fuck attention
not op, but
Is it that good? I liked how budgie looked but I never tried Solus before because I didn't know how many packages it had.
Go Manjaro or Mint. They are derived from Arch and Ubuntu respectively, are newbie friendly and have none of the main drawbacks(namely arch's high-maintenance and ubuntu's botnet/canonical lock-in)
You should get AIDS as your """""""""""daily driver"""""""""""
Yeah it's that good. And it has a lot of packages now.
Install Solus
That's garbage recommendation. Use linux for more than week before you make another one.
Not him, but mint is a great distro to setup on a family computer, or for someone who is not very tech literate and cannot use Windows for whatever reason. Not good for most people on Sup Forums, but that doesn't mean it isn't good for anyone.
Manjaro on the other hand is actually just shit and should never be recommended over antergos.
no u pic related pls
WOW THANKS KEVIN I'M CONVERTED
No for reals I'll give it another try. I'm still convinced it's pointless, you know, like your existence.

OP here. I think I might be going with Solus. Gotta say, it looks pretty nice. Either that or Arch
do not bother with arch. debian will provide you with a much better, more stable & secure system and with a less retarded community
where did this whole 'arch is unstable and hard to use' meme originate from?
you literally have control over everything, so the only way to fuck something up is if you yourself make a mistake.
Also, thanks to antergos and arch anywhere it is accessible to everyone.
Using either of those two you just have to pick a DE and you're good to go right out of the box.
arch by its nature is unstable, pushing packages very early on from upstream without much testing on them, it will be less stable. why should i have to check its website every time before i update for issues with it when i could just apt-get dist-upgrade and move on? arch-based distros are different though in terms of stability i will say, but it is arch we're on about.
>why should i have to check its website every time before i update for issues
I have been using arch for close to three months now, and I have never had to do this.
I also have never had any stability issues with it. Nothing has ever broken from running sudo pacman -Syu or any other properly executed commands.
Maybe I just got lucky, but from my experience arch is just like any other distro, but requires more configuration initially.
pacman has a tendancy to overwrite configuration files last time i checked though. be sure to back them up if you edited them. you have been lucky to not be affected by it yet
I've used both Solus and Arch, and I would recommend Solus over Arch to anyone, whether they're new to Linux or have used Linux for a fair amount of time.
>pacman has a tendancy to overwrite configuration
No,no,no. I'm on a 4 year old install and I can tell you first hand, this doesn't happen. I've had Ubuntu do it though. Just today in fact. But, to be fair it was during an upgrade from 14.04 Server to 16.04. I'm actually amazed the transition from Upstart to Systemd worked. I'm pretty impressed.
what's good about it?
Install ubuntu, learn some basics.
The speed (it's the snappiest distro I've used), eopkg (the package manager, it's really nice), the gui software center if you don't want to use the terminal is second to none (I'll show it in the web), it's rolling release and uses really up to date stuff, if you do gaming, the best Steam experience you can have on Linux, the flagship desktop environment (Budgie) is superb, and it's super stable. Also it has a great community. Plus you can install your other things that might be harder to install on other distros (I'll include it in the webm).
sup kevin
>speed
this is something I'll have to try out for myself, but I'll take your word for it
>eopk is really nice
this doesn't mean anything
>gui software center
I use the terminal
>rolling release
so is arch
>gaming
I dual boot windows for that
>desktop environment
I don't use a desktop environment
>super stable
this is a good point
>great community
also (probably) a good point
Forgive me for being a bit skeptical, but you aren't really saying anything of substance as to what makes solus nice. It seems like you just really like the arc dark theme and since that is default in solus you have picked it.
Maybe just try it out and if you don't like it then don't use it. Just use something you like :)
install Debian
it has the best forks: Devuan, Kali, Tails, Subgraph, Elementary OS
if you're going to try shilling it then at least have some valid points.
Don't just back out as soon as someone asks why it's a good distro. This just makes me want to use it even less.
Well I mean, it's the fastest distro I've ever used, even faster than when I ran Arch, and Arch is already fast. eopkg has a nice search function, tells you what it's going to do, and installing packages is just sudo eopkg it [package] and updating is just sudo eopkg up. eopkg is also really fast. He doesn't use the gui for software center so he may really enjoy eopkg then, as it's also color coded too. There are other rolling release distros, so there isn't much to argue with there. He dual boots to windows for gaming so that's not really important to him. He can install i3 on Solus. It is super stable. And it does have a great community.
Arch clearly has a nicer logo.
this desu
Oh yeah, and they are also planning to go stateless. clearlinux.org
solus-project.com
ok there are some good things here.
I'll consider installing it on one of the old laptops I have laying around my house.
It mostly seems like it targets the same demographic as ubuntu/mint, so I think it would be really good for a family computer.
Arch is better imo
I'd go for arch-anywher einstaller or antergos so you get to see. But Arch is truly much easier to set up with the AUR and pacman and has a great wiki etc
sure most users suck but just avoid talking to them.
Why is manjaro shit? seems quite nice from what I've seen.
lol. so spot on .
also the fuck isa SOlsus and what is up with this budgie stuff?
>arch
>literal script kiddie OS
what are you even doing
nah the haxx script kiddies use Kali
Don't listen to anyone except me:
Install Antergos.
Slackware
listen to this guy
:^)
>using the smiley with a carat nose unironically
He clearly used it ironically.
Install Xubuntu if you're worried about Ubuntu botnet
No, clearly she didn't. :v)
comfyyy
Disgusting
So, I'm worried about my opinion getting ignored. Let me explain why antergos is the best:
>It's arch
>It doesn't require you to learn every bullshit imagined by techies to be installed/used
/post
A kernel used in the GNU operating system.
kernel.org
gnu.org
>linus uses this
Bullshit, he uses windows 10, the best OS on existense for serious Gamers.
>It's arch
No, it's antergos.
>It doesn't require you to learn every bullshit imagined by techies to be installed/used
This is the most neo-Sup Forums post of the month. What are you even doing on this board?
>No, it's antergos.
It uses aech repository without modifications. It's literally arch.
>what are you blablabla
Sorry but Linux code base is just terrible. Having to learn all this layers of shittyness just to make use of a computer is retarded. I don't use antergos personally, FreeBSD is the way to go if you aren't a beginner like op.
I'm at least one gazillion time smarter than you. So get kidnapped by loli aliens, faggot.
not even him but the only difference after install is that it has /etc/antergos-release instead of /etc/arch-release
You can type mv /etc/antergos-release /etc/arch-release and boom its exactly the same.
>first time
>cinnamon mint.
I've tried installing antergos 3 times, the 3 times I had some issue: networking, language, keyboard, even fucking X refused to work for some reason the last time I tried to install it.
Never had those problems with arch, hell even fucking manjaro works fine without any tweaking.
>So get kidnapped by loli aliens
Is this supposed to be a bad thing?
...
>So get kidnapped by loli aliens, faggot.
Man, I wish.
>get kidnapped by loli aliens
where do I sign up
>hurr durr you're just bating
out of arguments lincuck?
OK, I'll bite. He is talking about Linus Torvalds, are you really that daft?
Just use Ubuntu and change they de.
If you want to learn go for gentoo. Not even joking, it is a very good learning experience.
>Linus Torvalds
literally who?
pacaur -S budgie-desktop-git
LOOK AT THAT, NOW I HAVE A BETTER SOLUS
I just come here to be part of the meme: besides a lack of disk space, which lead to a failure in the linux firmware upgrade, I never had a problem with Arch. I've been using it for one year.
Besides that, the large Arch packages base and the ability to use numerous DEs without bugs or conflicts is pretty comfy.
>It's literally arch.
Last time I checked this distro name was literally "Antergos". You should literally learn what "literally" means. There is also another distro that is literally Arch. It's called Arch. Literally.
enjoy your 3rd party installer script :^)
You're literally a faggot, faggot.
I went straight from windows 7 to arch.
Completely wiped windows and never went back, no transition distro either.
Its one of the most frustrating things Ive ever done in life, but I do not regret it at all. If anything, I regret not doing it sooner.
>failing to understand basic logic
Yep, definitely an Arch user
Antergos is an Arch installer with an extra repository that literally only exists to install a desktop manager theme.
The only trace of Antergos being installed instead of Arch is that theme and extra repo. Everything else about it is Arch. The uname shows Arch. It is Arch.
I think his problem is just that screenfetch shows the Antergos logo, so obviously it isn't Arch.
screenfetch -D arch
set that as an alias and problem solved :^)
that's cheating and not official
see its how screenfetch determines your distro.
this wouldn't break any other programs?
no why would it. Its an empty file on arch.
You should use it for a bit longer senpai, I've used Arch for years and I used to say the same shit but after about 6 months of using it I got my first fuck up; the newest kernel had a bug in regards to my hard drive and thus I would get a kernel panic (this happens quit often on arch, it is usually fixed within a few days but still it is a thing that happens.)
Hell, last week I updated my Arch laptop and the wifi stopped working (and still isn't fixed yet.) These are things that happen when you use the default kernel instead of the lts. It isn't /that/ big of a deal as you can find work arounds but pretending that either of these things is as likely to happen under debian or ubuntu is idiotic.
What gpu/driver?
Quadro K2000M/370.28
t420?
W530
Oh okay I have an NVS 4200M my bad. How is hardware support, regardless?
Hardware support is great.
