Is it worth getting the Google Pixel Chromebook 2 if I have the money? It´s possible to get it for 500$ in Europe so im strongly thinking about it.
The display seems amazing and I already have a solid battlestation at home.
Has anyone tried it? Would you recommend it?
Is it worth getting the Google Pixel Chromebook 2 if I have the money...
sure
>12.85-inch touch display running at 2560×1700 with a 3:2 aspect ratio
I didn´t know this was possible
bump
not unless you wanna be cucked with no programs running on chrome os or shitux
What programs do I need that I cant run on a chromebook?
It has skype and office/gdocs. Thats basically what I need
gaems, photoshop, etc. but if you literally just need it for skype and office/gdocs then sure? you sound like you've already convinced yourself anyways.
Not really convinced yet, just trying to start a discussion. Im not really well read on chromebooks but this one looks promising, considering the ability to use android apps.
Can't chromebooks run all Android apps now?
It's worth it for this reason, but only if you install Linux on it imo. Then again, you're also going to have scaling issues for years because Linux software devs (aside from Linus) don't seem to give a shit about hidpi screens.
local video playback would be a pain
I would just crouton it
There is VLC for chromebooks, that should be good enough right?
Im definitely going to crouton it as well
>It´s possible to get it for 500$ in Europe
Where? I can't find any on ebay. They seem to be very rare.
Where can you find it for 500 dollaroos, link pls
in the scenario we're talking about, over a local network, VLC does its worst.
not to mention, Chrome OS is very stripped down in terms of applications even if it can run everything android. Linux does have some cool shit, e.g. keyboard-driven stuff, rice, real encryption, full unix utils meaning scripts, and a real dev environment.
It was even cheaper than I thought. And this is the only site where I found it. It´s not possible to buy one in scandinavia.
>posting a link to a product with only one(1) available
you don't really want the thing do oyu
got the first pixel model for 350 used but I must say it's brand new.
It was an impulse buy, chromebook is fucking beautiful, got it running in no time, already turned dev mode on and modified some shit in the internal disk (added fonts, moved around files)
The display is way above and beyond anything I've ever seen. It's ridiculous.
I will keep using it for now as shitposting machine and general web browsing, when I get bored most probably I will try to put Arch or some Ubuntu based shit on it. GalliumOS is actually a light xubuntu for chromebooks and it seems it has general decent support.
Unless you are getting one as cheap as this or cheaper I would not recommend it. It's a toy, a really well made and expensive one, but still a toy because it was meant for people that have tons of disposable cash and just want to use it as facebook/twitter machines, anything else requires a bit more effort or work to actually make it work or at least have an option.
So you wouldnt spend 500 on it?
Im aware of the limited operating system but it doesnt really bother me. I do have the cash so I might as well just go for it.
And I think its pretty worth since you can just run Linux on it.
>Implying anyone here can afford it
How hard would it be to put another ssd in it and can you install lunix on it?
Where did you find it for 500 burgers in Europe?
>Linux software devs (aside from Linus) don't seem to give a shit about hidpi screens
It's the other way around, you mongoloid cuck.
I own one. Not even joking you. I own one of these.
For what it is and does, I love it. I'll probably never have to buy a new laptop again.
If you're like me, you'll need to use InDesign and Photoshop for work. It can't run those things. That's why I have a desktop tho.
>Where did you find it for 500 burgers in Europe?
He must be availing of the googlers discount
For a $500 go with dell inspiron hp lenovo asus or whatever available as long as is x86 I'm sure for $500 you can find one available with 8gb ram and 6+ hours battery life.
I own a macbook (that I'm about to sell) and a x220 with maxed out ram and an SSD and a couple of batteries.
The x220 was cheaper when I first got it, probably spent twice as much with the ram and ssd and batteries. Excellent well round machine, really small, with the smallest battery (flat one) I get 4 hours of use easy and it is slightly smaller than the chromebook but bifier. I cannot recommend that machine enough.
Chromebook I got it just because. No real reasons besides "it's pretty, it was worth 1300 bucks and I can get it for almost a quarter of that, fuck it, let's buy it and if it doesn't work I'll sell it the same or for a profit". If you don't care, go for it, it's as premium as it gets, for me it feels more premium than the macbook but then again you have to go the extra mile if you want to do more than just browse around, edit some files and read your email/facebook.
I'm not trying to convince you to not get it, I'm typing this from mine and it's comfy as fuck
Fellow Pixel bro.
it's such a comfy laptop to use.
Well adobe said that photoshop is going to be available in chrome so I guess thats covered.
Never used photoshop in my life though, not my field.
Photoshop in Chrome? Hot damn sign me the fuck up.
What's your field? Are you just planning on using the Pixel as a shit posting device?
the weirdest thing I noticed, since I had this for a week is that sometimes it's really cool to just touch something on the screen and keep typing than using the touchpad. And the touchpad is good and responsive. I would say it's as good as the ones on macbooks. Fucking windows laptops are a disgrace on that department.
If you need photoshop and other adobe software on the go, you sure need another laptop and not a chromebook. I mostly do office work and run some arcaic programs on a windows 7 VM on my x220 for work, if I ever going to install linux on this I think I can work it.
Thats why I really want it, it just looks lo luxourious and premium as fuck. Not to mention the comfy.
Seems like im getting the pixel then
I've noticed that too. Not that it's a deal breaker or anything.
It really does feel like Google took everything from a MacBook and tried to one-up them with everything EXCEPT the OS. But who am I kidding, the OS fucking flies on this thing.
I can confirm it feels both premium as fuck and comfy. But know the systems limitations. You should know what you're getting yourself into.
Unless you just install Linux lol
>64GB SSD soldered to the motherboard
Currently on my last year in IR, then doing a internship in Brussels. I'l probably only use gdocs and google spreadsheets for work. But yes 99% of the time it will be for shitposting, porn and just internet in general.
Oh, then you wont own a better machine for those uses.
Yeah, whatever happens just make a thread after using it for a few days and you can rant or tell us how much you love it. I'm still surprised that I'm liking it this much.
For random anons I would recommend other chromebooks as shitposts machines/cheap portables like the Dell Chromebook 11, has a shitton of battery life and you can get those refurbished for 150~ buckaroos or just a fucking thinkpad, they sound like a meme but they are actually worth every cent.
yeah, and SD cards and 1Tb google drive free for two years. It's not for you to carry around your 10Tb loli pic collection. You need something like a T420 with 2 drives or just a nice external drive.
Yeah im totally aware of the limitations. I do have a monster desktop for gaming and other stuff so that wont be a problem. Feels like the absolutely the best laptop for web browsing, streaming and office work.
Then you sound like you'll be very happy with yours. Also, I think ChromeOS might surprise you with the features it has.
>Feels like the absolutely the best laptop for web browsing, streaming and office work.
This is true. The OS is just built around these things. I don't know, I couldn't happily do these things on Windows. After awhile, the bloat and bullshit gets to be too much. ChromeOS is as fast as it has been since the day I got the laptop.
I've been looking at getting a chromebook of some sort
Do I need to get one with a touchscreen to make use of the play store apps that are going to be added to it?
so far is not available to all chromebooks, just a handful, but I guess that if you have a touchscreen it would be better for using the Android apps.
Curiously the first Pixel isn't getting any love yet and the Pixel 2 just recently got access to the store. Google is testing around so they went for the better specced and most common chromebooks with touchscreens and some on the lower end side that are way more popular than their premium experiments. Look around a bit and you can get the exact models and price if you are dead set on getting support right now for the android apps.
Is this the biggest tech tease?
They made one of the best looking laptops ever. Gave it a gorgeous 3:2 screen when everything else is 16:9, gave it a good keyboard and touchpad.
And then they limit it to an OS that is mostly made for casual browsing. If they released a normal Windows/Linux version of this with a proper sized drive they would sell so much.
Can't you just install Linux to it by yourself?
>for 500$ in Europe
Where?
crouton is really just installing linux inside of chrome OS, through a chroot. there's a performance hit associated with that.
user, you can plain install linux on chromebooks. If you don't want to lose or dual booth into chromeos you can use crouton, it's kinda of ok but it's the worst if you want a full linux machine.
Is bootloader unlocked for this thing? Can i just install linux distro on it?
Literally the post above yours, you donut
everything is possible if you believe in yourself user
Soldered in storage
>Currently unavailable.
Sorry for your loss op
If You want something not Mac but also a fashion statement, M$ surface.
Dont believe me? visit any local computer store and hands on the MS surface VS any top of the line chromebook.
Surface is worth it, if its the screen You want, even better then Macbook.
Trust me, stay away from chromebook its going to be another w10 meme.
Not like this joe knows anything about laptops or something.
thanks user, nobody knew that. Nobody talked about it in this thread either. (You) are a savior. An hero.
>this pc with Win 7 and a gtx 1060
oh bb would berry
My mate just put Linux on his old one, it seemed pretty sweet.
The thing about chromebook, is its almost always sub 270$
Sometimes ebay has these crazy fire sales, the last one Noteworthy, was a refurbished HP laptop with AMD A10-9600 APU 8 gigs of ram 1 TB HD for 260$.
AMD effectively killed the Chromebook if its Price You want.
If AMD wants to get rid of overstock really fast, Better take cover.
Funny, how the same laptops are now selling just below 400$ right now.
