I don't know why everyone is always rushing to leave their parents home. Unless your parents are cancer than sure, but most people don't need to move out the second they hit 18.

But what if your parents live in the middle of nowhere?

Personally, not being independent is really tiring for me and I think it's the main reason behind my mild depression (it's mild but has some consequences that drive me crazy). But then again it's more the sole financial independence, 'being able' to live by yourself more than actually doing it. Still, if I could earn my living I would not take a dime from my parents. But that's just my unpopular standpoint, my point is independence may give one mental perks more valuable than the living expenses.

home-liver here. I pay for everything but rent. Just come home and stay in my bedroom and they let me use the upstairs bathroom too.

Don't think for a second that your "friends" won't turn their back on you when you most need them. Always have a back-up plan to take care of yourself in the event of a back stabber. Also don't do drugs, they always bring more problems than the ones they temporarily alleviate.

Wise words

Also very wise words. Being a recluse will make you miserable.

I already left my parents' place two years ago. I still don't earn my own living though - they are paying for my education and all expenses since I can't live at their place and go to my uni at the same time (different cities). And I know getting independent isn't a wonderful cure - I just think that being dependent on others contributes to deepening the depression.

Build credit responsibly. Get a low-limit credit card and charge $100 a month on it. Pay it off in full at the end of the pay period. 6 months later get a second card and do the same thing. Do not buy a car without having good credit; the salesman and sales manager will eat you alive and you'll be underwater on your car loan until it's paid off or you refinance like a smart person.

- Living with your parents is fine, despite the manufactured social stigma. Make sure you pay for groceries and bills.

- Pick up a high-tech skill (e.g programming), and a low-tech skill too (e.g cooking). Economies rise and tumble, and a backup plan is important.

- Do not burn bridges with your college, your current job as you are quitting, or with recruiters.

- Have a large CV, with your full life story in it. Have specific resumes for specific jobs, where you omit the irrelevant details. Your resume has about 5 seconds to tell the recruiter to send it to the KIV folder, or the trash.

...yes, 5 seconds.

- Dress in formal attire for your phone interview. Sit at a table far away from your laptop or pc.

- Do not lie about your skills in your resume, or in the job interview. They will know.

I am in the middle of hiring a web dev. Read lots of resumes/CVs, did a lot of phone and real-life interviews. Ask if you want to know anything, but a word of warning: I live in SEA, so expect some behavioural/cultural differences.
