Using backup software is massively faster and easier and more reliable than copy+paste. Unless you are dealing with very small amounts of data, you'd have to keep a record of all the changes that have occured and then copy, delete, move and rename files accordingly on the backup drive. Or you could just press a few buttons and have a program do it all automatically.
